tilt trim pump
« on: June 16, 2010, 05:27:07 PM »
I have a 1977 v184 with a inline 6,tilt /trim  is working..but its goes much slower going down than up. Up seems just fine, its just trimming down that seems really slow, maybe 1/4 speed as opposed to the up speed.....any thoughts?  Trim pump is original squarish pump. pump is out of boat,i removed it today to clean it up a bit, I am thinking contacts need cleaning and to oil looked pretty old too.

yea, i guess just clean it all up, maybe pull the block off the bottom too, replace o-rings, and clean out. Also, since you have the pump out. lift the lower unit by hand and see if it moves up and down easily and has no restrictions.

Check the pivot pins on the drive's gimbal ring, if they're crudded up with corrosion and debris they could be preventing the drive from dropping on it's own. Those older systems relied more on gravity than actual hydraulic pressure for lowering the drive. Try standing on the drive when it's up and have someone operate the down button and see if it goes down any faster. You'll probably have to pull out the pivot pins, clean them up on a wire wheel, grease and reinstall them. I have also seen the trim rams get bound up in the bushing where the piston comes out from the cylinder, this can also slow down the lowering of the drive.

I greased up the pivot pins and rebuilt 1 of the rams (i was having trouble with it bleeding down). It does move freely with nothing hooked up to it.  I have the shop manual for this boat but it does'nt give much info about the pump as they used a few different brands. I guess i'll rip into it tomorrow and see what the inside of the pump looks like.It worked fine back in 2004 that was the last time i ran the boat. Also steering seems kinda tight, but i post on that later. I am looking for some cowl vents or 1 cowl vent for the engine bay also a hatch cover http://www.cgoamn.com/resources/77gl-v184.jpg.

Does the pump have one or two solenoids.
Had the same problem with my 77 with one solenoid.
On the single solenoid ones the power for down has to go from pump to switch and back to pump lots of resistance in the wiring and switch.
Install a solenoid on the down side and power goes from battey to pump will run same speed as up.

I never worked on one  before but i just see 1, just gonna rip it apart and see what i find might be a bad seal or just wore out oil..it calls for motor oil in it on the pump 5w 20-30,there was a sticker on it when i pull it out...i put the tilt/trim fluid from the store so not sure if thats the cause. Also seems like there is an a air adjustment screw next to the fill hole..does that need to be tight or some what loose the screw in question has a rubber washer on it, not sure if it's just a vent or a adjustment screw! I looked most of the night for a schematic for the pump but no go, didnt find any name brands on it just a few casting numbers

Those cowl vent's are a tuff find. You can not get direct replacements anymore. I ended up watching craiglist and ebay for a long time before some popped up for me. You can get different style one's but will most likely need to cut the fiberglass to get them to fit.

Maybe post some pictures of the pump so we know what kind you have.

the lower screw is the fill. the upper is a vent. looks just like mine. i don't remember even loosing up my vent screw when i pulled mine out. seems like you would open it when you purging the air out of the system. shouldn't matter if it's air tight or not anyway's as it just a reservoir like on a master cylinder on a car.

added a few photos...doing a lot at once!  trim pump installed today after cleaning and new oil, same thing goes down slow,up is still good. I did stand on it a bit  little bit on difference, every thing is free and oiled/greesed up so at a loss atm, I got bones coming out this weekend from nelson marine he's been doing this *Censored * for over 30 years so  i'll figure it out! Anyway i added a few pics on the new tach install, and a motor pic after my pertronics upgrade and tune up...so as soon as i get the trim pump worked out gonna rock the boat again

Installed a new tach after a tune up and it didnt start...head scratch..looked at all the connections all good. So after an hour or two of looking and testing i disconnected the tach and bang fired right up! Turns out it was a bad tach out of the box and caused a short to the ignition,no spark! Back to the store for a new one..lol

Another guy in the group had that same thing happen. Except his old tach shorted out causing the engine not to start. Pretty bad with something new....Guess they can't make anything good anymore! Guess that's why we ride classics!
