wiring harness
« on: September 03, 2011, 09:28:01 AM »
Decided it was time to replace the internal wiring harness on my '77 1150 Merc.  Cracked insulation on wires was getting bad.  Maybe my imagination, but motor seems to run better.

I did the same about a month ago ... '76 Mercury 1150.  I was surprised at how much smaller gauges were used on the new harness - but it looks a lot better under the cowling, now.  All of my old wires had faded/rotted into the same color - they were all grayish brown, except the blacks.  I was amazed, too, at how differently the exact same part was priced.  I paid $95 + extra for overnight shipping.  It arrived the next day & I was wired up in half an hour.  The only trouble I had was getting to one of the bolts that holds down the starter solenoid.  It was so close to the housing that I couldn't squeeze my socket between the top of the bolt and the housing.

I will be ordering a new boat harness this winter - who knows how many times mine has been spliced into for various reasons.

I got mine from www.marineengine.com.  $112.00.  You're right - prices for this part varied greatly.  The wires sure are smaller on the new harness, but my electrician buddy that helped me install the harness says not to worry about it.  Motor looks much better with the new wires.  Just touching the old wires would cause the insulation to crack and fall off.  It was definately time for new.

Looks like boatfix is the best price.  Oh well, I did get a "free" waterproof tote bag (a plastic zip-lock bag imprinted with the seller's name) included with the harness !!!!!!!!!!!

Badger ... I paid $126 with the overnight shipping included.  I had called to confirm the product was in stock, ordered online while talking to a rep and gave the order number so they could process immediately.  I didn't get any freebies & the packaged wiring identification was inconsistent with the Merc Manual - I followed the Merc Manual, not the insert.

I would have happily paid the $112 to order from someone else had it not been in-stock at boatfix.
