Found in shed north of the twin cities. As normal all wood is rotten and interior is shot. But all parts are there cooler with lid,ski pole, super trap mufflers and center console. No extra holes cut any where. The bad is that it has had a small repair on the bow and everything from rub rail up was cleared. The clear is peeling. Not sure what I am going to do at this point with that. Also has factory aluminum trailer with stock turbine wheels and trailer brakes that work.
Color is Orange and tan

NICE !

Coral ?

Coral ?
Looks like Coral to me. His bow is even MF where mine isn’t
-
1984 Timmi
-
Looks quite similiar to make 85 colors, Coral/Cream. Never seen a Timi with CVX on the side. Another item I noticed is the handrail on the right side as you would climb up the boarding ladder. Kinda makes sense, but I'd guess aftermarket addition. Appears to be far more restorable than mine was. Would make a great project for someone.
-
Nice score.. don’t find them like that very often.

Does/did your Intimidator have a metal flake bow? It appears the CVX on the sides is probably just tape.
-
No, my bow/front deck were painted Cream.
-
Mike do you plan to flake back with coral color again?
If so I suppose matching existing with a total redeux does not matter.
Just wondering if you checked into flake that matches.
Going to try and find a match as close as I can, because rub rail down is in very good shape.
-
I saw some Roth flake sometime ago that looked identical to the original Glastron coral, though it was called red something. With an intercoat clear, you could tint to help color match. Since there is an angle break at the rub rail, I'd think the color match would have to be fairly off to notice. And at that, more noticeable on trailer than water. Shoot some test scraps, see what the formulation needs to be. Greg posted the attached pic in my "Timi Time" thread that shoes the original design on my 85. My new scheme will be Coral again, I do like the cream color over white, I've just not decided the bow area flake or solid color yet.
-
The more I stared at your bow, the more I notice the bow light is set a bit far back. Must have punched the nose and the solid color was easier to match after the glass work was done.
-
Yes something happened at the nose of the bow. The boat is going to sit for awhile with a lot of time to think how and where to go with the top half of the hull. But as of now thinking the top half will have to be redone. Will talk to different companies to try and get samples of colors. Do not having to spend lots of money for stuff that foes not match.

If you look close the rib that runs down the bow has an opening where the bow light lays. Mine is the same way. It is where it has always been.

I can measure it tomorrow, but my bow light is closer, similiar to Terry's. Might be a difference in the design? Mine came with the large letters, Glastron, on the deck, no GC.

1983

Bow light center of pad is 9". Not many spots on my Timi look good, but here is a spot under the port exhaust that shows the flake color fairly well.
-
Glastron must have had a couple of molds. Can not think of any thing else that would explain the difference in the bow light in 2 different locations.
-
That is interesting. Seems like it's closer to the front on the white bows. 1985-1986. Maybe they did make a new mold.

My Intimidator is an 84 like Jeff’s
-
huh, strange, maybe they did all this oddball stuff just to screw with our heads! The mid 80's were the strangest time for Glastron.
-
Engine covers vary as well, but maybe not as bad as the cvx-18 lids did. The interesting compare is Jeff's compared to Terry's since they are both 84's correct? Change paint/gel and badging and it becomes even more confusing. No matter what, Jeff, that is an enviable find, I don't know how you do it. Nice resto project. Starting to look like CGOAMN 2020 will be the year of the Timi's!
-
Did you guys see Andy's Timmi just sold for $15000 !

The best I’ve been able to tell is that in 1985 the hood changed and they also started using the Glastron emblem instead of the Glastron/Carlson emblem. Something to point out is that Jeff’s production date is an 84A, August beginning of production run, while mine is an 84I, April towards the end of production run for that model year. Maybe something change during that time.

Jeff pretty sure it orange ..

Bahahahaha this one is smoooooth and no fading do not think it spent to much time in boat..
But close to the same color looks to be like a burnt orange color.
Have ordered a bunch of samples hope to find something close.

Some one said you could remove peeling clear coat with a pressure washer, not sure if that's true or not ?
But Sara has a gas powered pressure washer if you want to try.

-
I'm kinda doubting a pressure washer would work, but not saying impossible. Might just be the clear never really bonded well enough. Certainly an abrasive might work and gel over?
-
Tanking poorly applied paint off many time with pressure washer or just an air blower. Makes a big mess though.
-
Interior pulled, motor pulled and tramsom assembly pulled. Ended up breaking 2 bolts off that thread into the outside assembly. They did not break off flush so there is enough thread that I can screw on a nut and weld to what's left. Hopefully with a little heat they will thread out. Also had some extra parts laying around and made a adjustable out drive stand. Should make installing out drives a little easier.
-
Great progress, probably been done before me.
-
Disassembled one of the front seats follow found out they are a fiberglass shell.
-
Fiberglass covered wood or all fiberglass ?
-
Full fiberglass, the area you sit down on is the sandwiched with 1/2 plywood on the inside and the bottom so there is place to staple the vinyl to.
-
WOW !
-
The front seats on my '86 CVX 18 are the same way.
http://forum.cgoamn.com/index.php?topic=8152.0 (http://forum.cgoamn.com/index.php?topic=8152.0)
-
Boat is finally gutted.
Started removing the tramsom cut around the outside to remove the fiberglass.
Tramsom was complete mush dug the wood out by hand total time to remove 30minutes.
-
Can't tell from the photo, but did your Timi have the hard grey filler between the hull glass and the transom wood? Looks like your making good progress.
-
Make's it much easier when it's mush !
Must be resin mixed with filler, saw dust or glass fibers ground up .. maybe ?
-
Mike yes it did between the filler and the hull total thickness close to 1/2".
-
Jeff's been busy ..
-
Making good progress. Somewhat surprised you didn't go the composite route. Planning to have it ready for August meet?
-
Mike nope not going to ready for the August meet this year, but next year will be a the year for the timi's.
Thought about the composite route but it lasted 34 yrs from the production line. Will do a much better job sealing everything. it,should, last my life time and then some.
-
Congrats on the find and looks like you have done this before! Thanks for sharing

Sanded the back area in between the strakes and added 6 layers of 1808 biax.
Going to grind out the hook on the bottom in between the strakes.

Special thanks to Jim Barret and my neighbor for helping me flip it over.

And over
-
You can really see the hook in that last photo. Grind away!
-
Wow, way to tackle it Jeff!!! Great work.
-
Great flip! what did you use to rotate it at the rear?
-
Used a chain fall connected to a long piece of wood that spanned 4 joists in the ceiling. That hooked to the back of the boat. On the back of the boat at the transom I cut a square hole thru the area where the cut out for the lower unit would be. Secured a 4x4x8ft long thru the transom with a piece of plywood and 2x4 secured to the floor.
And a come a long on the front thru the bow eye.
-
For everyone wondering what the hook is on a intimidator here is mine.
The actual hook is 6’6” from the transom going forward.
-
Position 5 and to the bottom center of boat no hook.

For now, that is the plan for the painting of my Timi, it follows the hull lines.
-
The 1983 brochure & P.I.G. didn't have anything on the Timmi ?
The 1982 C535 had that style swoosh.
And 1983 CVX17 & Scimitar.
Is the Timmi with the blower also a 1983 ?

Removed 1/4 of material from existing hook.
Going to fill the remainder area with csm to flatten out the rest of the hook.

We talked today about who had done gel on there boat.
You and Joe were the only one's I could think of.
His Brother-in law paints, but has never shot gel, so he was looking for tec. info on applying gel / flake.
Sent him your email address in a PM.

Obvious that your diabolical sanding / polishing plan is a success. Did you start with 220?
-
Chad
Started with 120 to take the highs off then switched to 220 to get everything flat. Then worked my way up 320,400,600,800,1000,1500,2000,2500. Then buffed with finesse II.
-
That's nerve wrecking work, just enough to make it smooth, but not too much to cut into the flake. Your arm's are going to look Popeye after that workout!
-
Looks fantastic, curious to know your process. Appears to be 2-3 gel black, then 4 coats clear gel with flake, then 4-6 coats clear gel over that? I'm just curious how many coats of clear do you need to have to allow finishing flat as you have done. I know automotive painting better than gel, but both your work and Joe's have me having second thoughts which way to go.
-
New gauges cleaned up nice !

Looks great Jeff. Do you have or will be needing new flappers for the exhaust trumpets? I will need a set eventually, curious to know where to find good ones.
-
Yes I will be needing them. Have one good one we can pattern off of. Just need to find the rubber sheet.

Buy them. Here is a link, i pretty sure these are the ones i bought.

I'm talking about the white letters on the gauge panel. The stamped letters.

I need to look at mine, but I was thinking the white lettering earning about fumes in the bilge were silkscreen printed, or maybe stencil painted? I found a way to print direct transfer lettering to mine, but I may just forgo the letters altogether. I assume that's the white letters you are referring to?

Oh sorry. Those where original to the panel.
I just cleaned it and sprayed 3 coats of adhesion promoter and a couple of coats of semi gloss lacquer.

Jeff got it flipped tonight
-
Looks great, congratulations on a successful flip. Always a bit nerve wracking when they come over center. By the speed of your progress you should be ready this summer! Will you complete the project up there, or finish paint/body then bring it home for assembly?
-
Plan is to Finnish all structural and gel up north then bring home.
Lot of work to do on the top side. Stress cracks.
Hope to have it finished by the meet maybe earlier.
-
Back support made it come down to the floor and all the way up into the upper corner hope to eliminate the cracking in the corners. Going to add blocking inside the gunnel and attach to the back brace.
-
Great idea Jeff. I considered doing something similar but have not done so yet for two reasons. My first thought was the cracking appears on Timi's that have proven to have rotten stringers, at least I've not heard of cracks reappearing after complete restorations. Maybe there are, just haven't heard about them. The second reason is foam and engine access, something I'll decide once I see the engine in place. OK, maybe a third reason is that the rear seat design I'm contemplating will tie this corner off better and forward, allowing a center seat section to pull out or tip up for access to front of engine, fuel filter, belts, etc. I also noticed the side to side transom and lack of stacked blocks for engine mounts, are you planning a mounting hoop as well? Overall you are making great progress, that price you made must have taken some time to fit as well as you did. Love the craftmenship.

-
Period correct and gorgeous, but how do you keep it clean with beach outings. Beautiful work Jeff, can't wait to see it.
-
Mike the carpet is temporary, cannot buy carpet (covid) bought a rug just to throw in to have something there.
Trying to keep it clean will be a nightmare probably hold about 200 lbs of sand before you would notice.
I have some 80/20 loop picked out that I will install when it becomes available there limiting it to 1yd as of now.
-
Changed out alternator now charging at 14 volts.
Took out this evening over heating issue. Which I believe was a result of a spun coupler.
So I guess the motor needs to come out and address the issue of a spun coupler and why.
-
Been sitting a long time, maybe with the rot, the coupler took a set out of alignment and it just beat itself up running it again?
-
Coupler between engine and drive? I had that happen to the CVX-18. The left motor mount bolt had worked loose. It was still on there and the alignment was great when sitting, but under heavy load the left side of the engine was lifting up the misalignment at speed was wearing the aluminum coupler each time. Finally it let loose on Minnetonka, lost forward and temp started spiking. Had to shut down and tow in.
-
Chad Same thing temp spiked stayed up around 180. Forward try to add power it was the clutch was slipping.
Pull the motor this morning with help from Scott Anderson 45 minutes it was out.
Tim had a new coupler ran to Red Wing picked it up, installed motor back in the boat.
Working on a perfect alignment have not been able to achieve that yet looking for some help.
Other than the coupler everything else is good.
-
Alignment can be difficult complicated further by the gimbal bearing wanting to be pointing somewhere else. Just a suggestion, but this is what I do and it seems to work well. I start with a short piece of pvc tubing that I sanded to fit snugly in coupler. I then adjust engine to center that in the gimbal bearing. After that the alignment tool can be inserted and with a few taps the bearing aligns. Last step is using some grease on the alignment tool and checking the pattern the coupler makes. Just curious, did you fit the new coupler on the drive before installation to check the splines match up smoothly? It only takes a small burr to make the process difficult. Hope this helps.
-
You following the Mercruiser procedure to 'set' the coupler into alignment? (4 whacks on the alignment tool from all four directions?) My CVZ wouldn't align either...once I did that, it went in like butter.
-
Here's what I got from Rich.
-
Alignment done Joecame down this morning took us a couple of hours but smooth as butter now. Thanks Joe
