glass work
« on: February 27, 2011, 01:13:22 AM »
I been wanting to build some fiberglass top panels for my Scimitar, and since Barb is gone for the week-end, I stripped down the motor cover off her Intimidator to duplicate it too .. I'll make a mold off it to build one for my Scimitar.  I don't know that she could have sit still seeing me spray fiberglass resin all over her beautiful motor cover .. kinda scared me too.

I don't have a CV-16 layin around, but Barb's Intimidator will be back over here in a couple days ... hmmm

I was just kidding, the releasing agent I use, PVA, is water soluble, I spray it on what ever I want to make a shell from let it dry, and when it does, it looks just like a clear coat job, can hardly tell it's there, I used more on this project than I have on anything else I've done, just like wrapping it in a plastic bag.  I spray the whole thing with a good coat of resin, and let it set up before I start laying the glass, so the glass mat, brush, and rubbing, don't break the pva seal, it's really pretty safe doing it that way.  I made the molds off the original T Tops and winglets this way on my Scimitar, gave them to Frankie @ Eaton Quade Plastics,  he has made mine and several other sets to Scimitar owners in the U.S. and several countries.  I am going to duplicate the little center console from Barb's boat also ... when I catch her not looking.

Red, just because I live in Edmond and you live in the Village does not mean that I am that far out of town. I can be there in 20 minutes be careful.
While you have the hardware pulled off that cover lets measure the cover screw and make sure it is going to be the same as what Shrom will be duplicating.

Red your amazing! Barb the part off my boat that Shrom is reproducing should fit your boat perfectly. Same P/N according to GC BOMs for each boat.

Spray resin?
So its a sandwich of resin, fabric/mat, resin?

Spraying the resin on after the pva does two things,  it gives me a smoother finish inside the mold, and it gives a stronger surface on the pva to lay more the mat on, I'll lay up a couple, or several layers of mat to make the mold strong enough not to flex when I start the process inside the mold to create a duplicate.
