Couple of stressful days...
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:37:43 PM »
Ok, some on facebook probably saw my posts.

Tuesday morning we rushed my son to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy.  It ruptured on Saturday and with the stomach flu going through school this last week, the symptoms were identical to the stomach flu.  His fever persisted and my wife insisted on bringing him to the doctor on Tuesday.  She's a smart one.

He's doing ok now, in a bit of pain, but...now I'm going a little bit stir crazy being cooped up in the hospital for 2 days...so...

Wex...any more pictures I can post for you?

Green w/Envy...since I'm hitting refresh every 5 seconds...now would be an excellent time to unveil the addition! :)

Rich/Red/Whoever knows - I've got my tilt/trim pump hooked up to the buttons using the existing wiring harness, but where do the blue & purple wires coming from the pump go?  Trim Limit & Tilt/Trim sender?  Where are those located at?

What else can I occupy my time with?  Work?  (No thanks...that's not the focus for this week.)

Doran,
first of all, thank GOD you caught that... we almost lost my dad last year because he was scheduled for a hernia operation, and he thought that was the pain he was experiencing, and when they went to operate, they discovered a burst appendix (would have died in another day or two). so seriously, good call on getting that checked out...

as far as my pics, I was actually about to send you a pm thanking you for stepping up to take care of that for me. I have none right now, but I did move the boat and the "tent" in front of the garage, as I have a full day to work on it tomorrow and plan to remove the transom, so there should be pics tomorrow...

but in the meantime, I will pm you my #, and if you are still pacing the hospital floor tomorrow, feel free to call me, and I'll bore you with the details of my project, who knows, it might distract you!  ;D

Dor - Sorry to hear about your hectic few days, glad things are getting better. Yes, the blue and purple wires from the trim pump wiring harness go to the trim limit sensor wires that come through the transom assembly from the port-side sensor puck on the steering gimbal. See the diagram below:

Thanks Rich.  Since those wires were completely rotted out, they disintegrated when I took the transom bracket off last fall.  I haven't ordered the pucks yet, should be soon.

It was weird, but we seem to blow appendix's in my family.  My dad, brother & now my son has blown his too.  It was pretty close...another day and things would have started to get really serious.

I'll give you a call tomorrow.  He's finally sleeping so I have a little more down time.

Then here's what you can do - make up a jumper wire to connect the blue and purple wires together. This will eliminate the trim limit function and allow you to use your trim normally through it's full range of lift. I did this on my boat because I didn't want the hassle of dealing with the limit function.

So, for the time being, I'm only losing my trim limit & my trim sensor to the gauge?

That's right, but you need to connect the trim limit wires together so you can raise the drive with a push of just the "UP" button. Otherwise you would have to use the "trailer" button or the combination of both "UP" and "OUT" buttons together to trim and raise the drive up.

Ok, that's a good temporary patch for now.  Thanks Rich.

The thing I still don't get on this generation of pump...is why do I only have 1 oil line coming out of the pump.  Isn't the clear one air?

They're both for oil. If the other was for air then your drive would bouncing all over the place whenever you shift into forward or reverse or give it the gas. I believe that hose is just a low-pressure hose whereas the other "braided" hose does all the lifting work. But then again, there isn't much pressure in the lines anyway, all the pressure is generated in the rams. When you get the trim working you have to cycle the trim full up to full down multiple times while filling the oil reservoir until it won't take any more oil. Cycling the system will bleed out the air and fill the rams with oil.

I'm glad to hear your son is recovering OK.

My 174 has the trim limiter disabled also.
It works just fine with only up / down functions, I just trim to max speed with the up button.

So no issues Jim?  When you trailer, you just go all the way up, otherwise its more outboard style with just an up/down, and no use of the 'trailer' button?  Sounds like a plan.

The trim limiter quit working on my '77 1150 Merc outboard 20 years ago.  Never bothered to get it fixed.  I use the up button to fully raise the motor.

Yeah, we don't need no stinkin' limiters. My boat doesn't even have a trim gauge so I'm really driving by the seat of my pants!  ;D

Trim pump says SAE-30...any brand ok?  Or should I use the diesel oil like was recommended for the motor?

I use non-detergent 30W - Old School.
You don't want a bunch of state-of-the-art additives for an old school pump.

The key words there are "non-detergent", or a good quality hydraulic oil.  Detergent oil keeps contaminants in suspension. A non-detergent lets it settle to the bottom of the tank.
