Off topic sewing machine question Doug???
« on: November 17, 2012, 11:17:29 AM »
I am looking at doing a couple custom covers for Phoenix Rising. After doing some calling around and pricing I figure for $800 for a custom cover I could give it a try my self. I was looking at my local craigslist and found this sewing machine

http://grandisland.craigslist.org/art/3387399821.html

haven't looked at it yet, but I am thinking for $75 if it is in good working order it would be worth it.

Do you have an electric motor lined up to run it, or are you thinking of buying the machine and clutch motor for $175?  Don't you have to have something on the other end of that belt to drive it?

The person has not called back yet. Did not know it needed a motor to run it. If it rose not pan out I will keep looking.

Yeah it appears that's just the head for sale. If'n it sews it's probly worth all of $75, but you still need a base and/or a motor. Add at least another couple hunnert for them.

Thanks for the info Doug! I think I am going to find a good old steel singer or kenmore unit from the late 60s with a 1.0amp motor and call it good. One question for you Doug, do I need a zig zag feature for building covers, or can I get by with a straight stitch?

I'd say go for it, of course 'haggle' a lil. (You have to haggle.)

But seriously it looks like a decent package for the asking price. That's the whole deal too. Head, table, motor. Now all's ya got's to do is build a bigger table 'round it.

Sew something with it before you buy it! Does it have reverse?

edit: Determine the year and/or model # and look it up. Bound to be something in cyberspace about it.
