Well, for the most part, I think our anti-spam measures are working.

We load security patches when they come available, and adding a few vague and random challenge questions for registration I think has helped as well.  (Spammers can auto-answer the basic ones.)

But...90% of it is luck so far...we're not magically spam proof, but fixing our software 18 mos. ago, so we could add our anti-spam measures has helped a great deal.

We probably need to talk about upgrading again this winter.

Gregg - I can get in, even pull up an 'unread list'...but when I try opening up a thread is when I get the error.

I noticed some 'cheap ipad's' threads going up, so I'm assuming they've been hit again.

you have to remember one thing this board is a lot more active than the national one, so if we see something odd one of us is bound to report it before it can do any damage.

I wish that were the case Brandon.

Most people assume that a 'spammer' is some guy smoking a cigarette off in some windowless room in a former Eastern bloc country we've never heard of...

The reality is that its done from server farms (a lot of them in the USA) automatically running intelligent software that once 'In'...could bring down our tiny little corner of the world faster than it takes to log in...

Our only defense is to put up as many 'left turns' in the registration process to keep them at bay...and hope that SMF doesn't have some bug that bypasses all of their security measures.

Brian, Jason, Gregg and I do our best to keep the site backed up so that we'll loose as little as possible once they break our site...b/c its just a matter of time, unfortunately.

I clear the error log every five days , give or take a day, and there's about twenty pages of spammers trying to get in.
SFS work very well, better then I thought it would ...  and we have been lucky ...

You make a good point Doran. Wow its almost been ten years since I was working with a corporate infrastructure a lot has changed. All I can say is I don't think I could handle today's technical issues in a large support environment.
