Band Geek Day!!!
« on: October 05, 2013, 01:24:24 PM »
Today was my Band Geek Day for the year. My 20th year marching in the Harvest of Harmony Parade in Grand Island, NE. It has been a family affair for me since I graduated High School 13 years ago beginning when my sister drafted me into the Alumni band, and then Amber joined the Alumni band 9 years ago. Sorry we did not get a picture taken before we stepped off today so here is one from a couple of years ago.

BTW I am a drummer, and proud to say that in the 20 years in this parade I have never dropped a stick!

Cool! That's a long time in the band! I played trumpet in high school. Still have it. Tried to play it a couple months ago. Completely forgot everything! Nice to see you stuck with it. We should have a pic of you playing your drums in your boat. Would fit right in with the Bishops playing the guitar in their boat..... Where is that pic?

Yes, I am a closet band geek.

Played piano as a kid but the French Horn was my instrument from 6th grade on. We didn't have a full fledged marching band til High School/9th grade.

Some'a the gayest uniforms you could ever imagine. Orange & black, like a Tiger I reckon ...

I 'member we always had alotta fun/chaos when we went on "exchange trips".

Way to go Brandon, how about this weather...snow in the Panhandle, 47 degrees in Lincoln.  Still haven't winterized yet, my son wants to make one last quick run...I'm not sure we will get it in this year...

Thanks, it is still a lot of fun after all these years, and something I hope to enjoy for many years to come

It was 40 degrees when we stepped off this morning with a wind chill of 31. I just drained the block and manifold just to be safe.
I am looking to do a run next weekend to try out the new fuel pump. I would be willing to head your way Joe if you want to do a run next weekend.

Nothing better than a good drum line in the fall.

My son just signed up for band this year (5th grade).  The band teacher gave all the kids an opportunity to "audition" each instrument and he made recommendations for each child ... Aidan seemed to do well on trombone.  $700 later, we have a trombone in the house and he gets 30 minutes of band instruction per week (so far, there have been homecoming and other activities keeping them from getting any lesson since we bought the trombone).  I don't think I'd be any better than Jason Biggs playing trombone as a mistaken "Petey" on American Pie 2.

I have to ask, which would be better, my drum set or my marching toms?

I played clarinet from 4th thru 8th grade, bass clarinet during the later half of 8th grade. Didn't really like it. I guess I played because my older brothers played too. It screwed up my teeth so I gave it up and had braces on them for 2 years in high school, took up the bass guitar and have been playing that since, 30 years now. Had a gig last night and got home at 3am. It's much more rewarding.  ;D

Perhaps the most memorable experience was meeting Air Force One at the airport & playing 'Hail To The Cheif' for then president Gerald Ford as he exited the plane. No, he didn't fall down the stairs ... But when you saw the guy in person you could understand why he might be a lil clumsy. He was a very very big dude. He came over to us & shook a few hands, including mine. Never forget he had the biggest pair of meat hooks I'd ever seen, I swear his hands musta been a foot long from wrist to fingertip.

Anyway, I passed the horn down to my lil sister who put it through good use in HS & then in the Marine Corps Band. That horn's got quite a few miles on it.

Band on a Glastron? Already been done:

I always have to laugh at that pic. Not only is it ridiculously impossible it doesn't promote boating safety.  :D

Yeah that type of behavior might raise a few Marine Patrol eyebrows nowaday. 'Round here at least ...

Don't say "impossible" Rich. As we have photographic evidence to the contrary. (Doubt that pic was 'photoshopped'?) "Ridiculous" yes, but not impossible. Ridiculous doesn't acknowledge impossible ...

One can only imagine what the helo pilot & photographer had to be thinking ...

Well, obviously it wasn't impossible to do the photo shoot, that I can see. What I meant was impossible is to have a band with electric instruments try to play music on a speeding boat where there is no electricity, with wind in their faces and some girl dancing on a moving & bouncing platform to music she won't be able to hear.

Heck I did not even notice the girl in the bow with the drummer. I wonder how many times she got dumped overboard during that shoot.

Count me in!  That's cool Brandon that you're able to keep doing that... all my friends in the bands, especially Marching & Jazz is what kept me sane in HS... I played Trumpet from probably 5th - first year in college.  When I basically determined that I didn't want to be a HS band director, I put that horn in the closet and don't think it came out for more than a handful of times since.  Great experiences though... from our Jazz band being best in state and getting to march on Busch field in St. Louis for the football Cardinal games (yea that was a while ago). :)   But again, so cool that you can keep doing it!

I've toyed around with guitar and mountain dulcimer over the years, but my latest is the Double Bass... just two weeks ago I'm now renting one and started to take lessons.  I love the versatility of this instrument... this is how I want to pursue my love of blue/new grass & folk music and play along with my kids (acoustic guitar and percussion).  My neighbor came over this past weekend and we were jamming... I forgot how much fun this is.  WE played Patsy Cline's "Crazy" pretty well....  I'm hooked.  I don't know if I'll ever play that trumpet again though. :(
