Power steering ram rebuild
« on: March 17, 2016, 12:57:42 PM »
I am looking into rebuilding the steering ram/valve that I installed in Phoenix a couple of years ago. it is from an older 260/898 and has what it feels like to me start bypassing fluid when I turn one direction. Oh, this was caused by me allowing the steering system to run low on fluid and probably damaging an o-ring due to a leak in one of the hoses.

I have located some NOS kits and just wondering if anyone has any tips for doing the job.

Have lots of lint free towels, and new fluid or hydraulic assembly fluid at the ready.  I would disassemble first and check for scoring, bore issues, rod, piston, etc.... before buying the NOS kit.  Running low on fluid will cause the "power" effect to diminish near the end of travel, but I would not think it would damage the ram, the pump maybe, but not the ram.

thanks for the info Mike. I do plan on checking all those things. I just need to figure out how to take apart the steering cylinder it self. it looks sealed, but there is a new one on ebay and it looks where the square block is on the rod end my unscrew but I have yet to be able to confirm this.

Thank you Joe! I need to figure out what is bypassing. It is from One lock to the other only one direction that it bypasses. but if I rebuild the cylinder I am going to go through the valve also.

I found a trouble shooting guide for the steering system. I will probably be doing this once we get a little more consistent temps.
