Good morning- snow day here in NH, so I get to ponder some more questions.
As discussed, the steering wheel in my newly acquired 1973 cv16ss is not the "correct" one. I have looked at photos of brochures and of actual boats on this site (thank you, all of you). It looks like I should have a "wood" rim, 3-spokes-with-holes wheel. From reading and looking, it seems that there are different shafts? Some seem to be "square", and some are taper with a key. What "should" I have on the boat?
And what diameter is the wheel "supposed" to be?
Sincerely,
Bob W

Depends on what brand / model helm you have, just remove bolt and pry wheel off to see what your is.
Most I have seen are taper with key.
Ray has a few original wheel and wheel parts.
Mine was a different style then yours but about same size... 13 1/2 to 14 inches ... It interfered with my throttle / trim button, it was also starting to crack, so went with a smaller CVX style wheel, like the one you have now.
Glastron made the boat, but most of the hardware on them were made by other company's.
Steering ... Teleflex ... http://www.seastarsolutions.com/ (http://www.seastarsolutions.com/)

Seems like the 73-75 CV16SS had this wheel:

76 had this wheel:

The helm may have been replaced in your boat forcing a change to an aftermarket wheel. Correct me if I'm wrong guys but I thought the cable and helm used originally in these boats is no longer available and our old steering wheels do not work with newer helms. I thought Brian B ran into this issue when replacing the cable in his 75 CV16SS.

Most ... I believe .. New wheels are the taper/key shaft style.
Looks like something was changed / modified with your helm ...
-
If the boat was equipped with a RideGuide helm and cable it would probably have had a square taper shaft. Those are often replaced because you can't get the steering cable anymore. Most if not all of the Teleflex systems use a round taper shaft.

The one Jason shows was used in all the CV that year that I have seen. Same one on my 74 CV-19 .Its 15 in .dia. with square shaft.
Like Rich said cables are no longer made. NOS cables show up on ebay for about 125-150 dollars.

I have a few wheel options. I’ve been buying them again lately. If it’s a stock Glastron wheel with a round shaft, it was most likely made by Detmar. Square shaft is usually always in house Merc/Quicksilver. I’ll go hunting in my parts to get some pictures of wheels for ya.

Several Superior 500 wheels on the internet would be a pretty good match. Anyone know the diameter for a CV21?
-
1973 G/C brochure shows a RideGuide wheel.
-
Yep, but I don't know where to get one of those.
There are a lot of older Superior 500 wheels out there since they were a favorite of the hot rod crowd that look very similar to the 1970's G/C wheels. My boat is still all wrapped up for the winter, so I don't know if the Destroyer steering wheel currently on it mates to a Ride Guide square shaft or if the steering system has been replaced with a Teleflex taper shaft or ?????. Regardless, there are adapters to install the Superior 500.
The Superior 500 wheel comes in 12" to 16" sizes so it would be helpful to know the diameter of the wheel in the CV21 picture. Boat wheel spokes are usually spaced at 120-degrees apart vs. automotive wheels at 90-90-180 degrees, but I can live with that (just have to try to keep the steering adjusted to be straight ahead).

If I remember right .. which didn't happen often .. something like 15 & 3/4 inch on original wheels.
So 16 inches sound about right.
-
Thanks, Hyperacme.
They have both 15 1/2" and 16" wheels. I'm not a small guy, so I'll probably stay on the small side of the range to help fit under it.
I ordered the last of the GC steering wheel center caps and logos from Poland, so I'll probably have to come up with a novel attachment method there, too.

Did you see the free steering wheels in the
classified section .One of them is what you need.
Dont know if its still avalible .

Thanks for the heads-up ccv-19.
I sent thedeuceman an inquiry.
