I would think boat owners insurance would cover this, but you might only get the value of the policy not the cost of the repair.

What happens if you only have liability on for the winter?  There was no contact signed for anything. Would the owner be responsible for the damage?

Caveat: I'm not a lawyer or insurance expert.

If there's only liability coverage the policy won't cover this kind of claim.

It's possible that if the owner of the building has insurance, that policy might cover the damage to the boat. If not, you might be able to go after the owner for damages.

This is all my opinion only.

Sorry to see and hear about this, and for what its worth I'm neither an insurance agent or a lawyer.    I imagine it may rest with the nature of your agreement with the building owner.   If its a friend or family that allowed storage for free, then its on you.    However, if money exchange hands for storage, there must be some good faith effort on his part to ensure it is solid against normal regional weather    Not a tornado, nor a super heavy snow, so "act of God" may not play a part.    If it were me, I'd talk to them first, see where they stand on it.    Maybe his homeowners or Business insurance would cover it?   Doesn't hurt to ask, hopefully any damage to the 27 is minor.    First would be to get it out and inspected, hopefully he can shore it up well enough to get items out to rebuild building.   Good luck, hoping for a positive outcome.

Oh wow?.. that?s the worse thing I can think of?? I always keep full on mine no matter where they are stored? just for that reason..

Probably come out of your pocket, unless the owner of the building will help..  good luck and let us know what it looks like when you get it out

Let us know if you need help getting it out or the roof jacked up to remove it..

From Northstar Marine Insurance article:

"What if your boat was stored at a marina and the storage shed collapses?  Are you responsible for paying for the repairs to your boat?  This becomes a legal question.  In order for the marina's insurance policy to respond it must be proven that the marina's negligence contributed to the collapse.  For example, did the marina neglect to clear the snow from the structure.  If the marina is found to have done everything possible and was therefore not negligent, it may not be responsible for the repairs to your boat.  This is where your insurance policy comes in.

Every fall boaters ask us why they need insurance if the boat is in storage.  This winter is a prime example of why marine insurance policies are 12 month policies.  We encourage all boaters to protect themselves by keeping their policies active year round because there is nothing worse than having a client cancel the policy in October and call in January with a collapsed storage shed."

Jeff, how soon can the debris be cleared to see the extent of the damage?

Texted with him today. Said he was going to start on it this weekend.  Not sure where he is going to start with the snow removal and then the tin and beams. His insurance agent will be there tomorrow.

There is a lot of things campers, boats ,trailers etc. in the building.  My guess is the whole roof will have to come off before anything can be moved.

Went out to see the damage on the 27 today.  Windshields and bow rail are damaged beyond repair.  Only fiberglass damage is where one of the bow rail attach point went thru.  Luckily to access the area will be thru the anchor locker. No damage to any of the interior at this point that I can tell.

Could have been much worse. Still it is a heartbreaker to see the damaged areas.

The good news is he already found a parts boat. Pretty sure it's a done deal just has to make a little road trip. ;)

He'll have that gorgeous CV27 whipped back into shape in no time!
