So much for a quick project John. Lol
I see your motor has the distributor on the wrong end again.  :D

If you can drop on a Rochester q jet with a 2" tall spark arrestor the lid should close.

If your exhaust risors are the same height.

Ross, thanks for pointing that out, I'll try installing the motor in the other direction. Lol

Jeff, it's the risers that are the problem. They are at least 1" taller than the Mercruiser units. The starboard riser has enough clearance but the port side doesn't. The seat back where the lid was mounted looks like swiss cheese due to the many attempts to repair stripped mounting holes. I'm going to make a separate bracket to mount the lid and raise the lid at hinge 1" which will give me enough clearance to get on the water.  To get center riser manifolds for the 351 I had to go with Volvo Penta units as the only ones that Mercruiser made for that engine are the log style.

Yesterday I cut holes for the thru hull tips and coated the exposed wood with gelcoat. Today I installed the tips sealing them with 4200 then adjusted the elbows and connecting hoses. I needed to trim 1/2 in. from the upper and lower elbows tho get them to mate together square. Not a lot of room in a CVX engine bay.

Once the exhaust was buttoned up it's time to address water intake. The donor boat this engine came from didn't have power steering so I'll have to find a place to mount the oil cooler. The water hose from the transom to thermostat housing is no longer available so i"ll use the original one for the time being cutting it to insert the oil cooler.

Another project is the thermostat housing which is a Volvo Penta piece that matches the exhaust manifolds but that's for another day.

Problem:  The Mercruiser hose from the circulation pump to the thermostat housing is too short to reach the Volvo Penta Thermostat housing and the VP hose is routed right through the area the alternator occupies.

Solution:  Cut the Mercruiser hose just before it bends toward the housing, cut the VP hose to mate with the Merc hose and join together with a piece of pvc pipe.

To mate the 2 different size water inlet hoses from the transom to thermo housing a similar solution was used. Trim a piece of VP hose and connect it to the Merc hose with a pvc reducer.

Problem:  Mount a Saginaw power steering pump on a Ford motor that didn't have power steering.

Solution:  CVF Racing out of New Prague, MN has the answer!  A perfect fit out of the box, no mods needed.

Next I  needed to raise the front of the engine cover 1 inch to clear the exhaust risers. A bit of aluminum flat stock was used to make a bracket to screw the cover to.

No pictures as I was working close to a deadline.

Betty was coming up for the weekend and she said  " There better be a boat in the water when I get there"

My reply...." uh...How 'bout Sunday?"

Needless to say I worked late Fri. night, again late into Saturday night, 06:30 Sunday morning found me back in the garage and at 1:35 Sunday afternoon
I called out to Betty

"Time to head to the lake!"

The first splash went well. The lake was a little rough so we didn't stay out long. As always there are a few adjustments that are needed.

Yep. Custom. Thanks to Scott and Ken at Aquacut, a water jet cutting service located 2 blocks from my house.

Here's how it was done.

I purchased a set of " 302 Powered By Ford" valve covers even though they're for a 351. The 302 ones were the cheapest.

Next I gave Scott the Glastron/Carlson emblem from the engine cover so he could copy the "Carlson" script and scale it to fit the valve cover.

The covers than went to the Bridgeport to mill off the "302" call out. The "Carlson" script was water cut and secured to the valve covers.

For me Black wasn't going to cut it. There was no other choice than Corporate Blue.

In the earlier pictures it looked like you had new covers cast with the Carlson.  Really neat idea!
