We had the same issue with my son's rude.
Turned out to be plug wires. OEM wires are crap.
Go to auto parts store and buy 4 short plug wires.

Yes I second shipwreck will work on older motors and they mostly work on Johnson/evinrude motors. They have high labor costs by the hour but they get jobs done in timley manner and know what they’re talking about. Just be clear with what you want done and the explications.

Geyers Marine service osceola WI will also work on older motors.  They are the go to shop for St. Croix sport when they take in a motor older than 1990.

I was at Robbinsdale Marine today and talked to the owners. They work on Johnsons/Evinrudes back to 1954. The owners just bought a Scarab boat used on Lake Havasu with 700 HP that can go 70+ MPH and were going to use it at their cabin in Northern Minnesota on an eleven mile long lake.

They had just repaired a Hydrostream with a hopped up 235 Evinrude. Their third repair on the motor under three owners.
