Title: 72 or 73 CV-16SS with a Mercruiser, Need pictuers of the dash
Post by: jermcdowell on November 17, 2015, 08:08:47 AM
Anyone out there have a 72 or 73 CV-16SS with a Mercruiser in it?  I’m trying to make the switch plates for the dash and I haven’t been able to find any pictures of one.  The Mercruiser is different that the Volvo Penta.  It has a separate switch panel for the tilt & trim, mounted near the controller.  I have only been able to find pictures of the Volvo Penta switch plate.   I don’t know what they did in place of the in & out switch on the Mercruiser.

Thanks

Here is a link to a three button switch on ebay.

I believe this is what you are talking about

It may have been done with two separate toggle switches like my 74. I know the 72-73 had a different style dash but may have still been two toggles. I might have a picture of Tom's Blue 73 CV16SS dash somewhere. Will have to look.

72: no plastic dash
73: plastic dash but does not wrap down to where toggles are
74-76: plastic dash as below

74 (two toggles next to steering wheel:

Couldn't find any pictures of Merc. three button trim installed.

Pictures #1 & #2   are 1972 CV16SS with Volvo drives.
Pictures #3 & #4   are 1973 CV16SS with Volvo drives.

What is different between mercruiser and volvo switch plate then? Looks like as long as you have the molded dash you get toggle switches.

Looks like Sean's old 75 CV16SS with a volvo had toggles as well.

Thanks guys
It looks like the 74 is different than the 72 or 73.  Here is my problem.  My 72 CV-16SS was missing the dash altogether so I had to make a new one.  I also made one for my brother in-laws 73 CV-SS16.  The dash is the same but his has the Volvo Penta.  The Penta only has tilt not trim; so Glastron put the tilt switch in the dash.  It’s the switch on the far left in the three switch panel.   My 72 has the three switch panel with tilt & trim together mounted next to the control box because the Mercruiser has tilt & trim. Did they also put the tilt switch in the dash for the Mercruiser as well as the three switch panel next to the control box?  I don’t know.  I have not been able to find a good close up picture of one.

Attached is the dash that I made for my Brother In-law and the Volvo Penta switch plate

I'll have to go out to my boat in storage to get you some better pictures. To the RH side of the steering wheel you have horn, dash lights, and navigation lights. ON the LH side of the steering wheel you have blower, trim, and tilt. I rewired mine though so tilt and trim are on the same toggle. Basically bypasses the trim limit switch. Sometimes you just need a little more trim and trying to lift up on two toggles at the same time at full speed is a little tuff.

The trim switch on mine is where the horn is on the Volvo drives. So does the Volvo only have two toggles to the right of the steering wheel?

Here are the Volvo switch plates.  Left of the steering wheel is tilt, horn and blower.  On the right of the steering wheel are running lights & anchor lights on one switch, Panel lights and bulge pump on the second switch and Accessory on and off, on the third switch.

The other attachment is how my 72 is. The tilt & trim is mounted next to the controller.  It’s not that easy to work either.

Thanks for checking your dash.  I hope that it is easy to get to.

One question, could you upgrade your control handle to a different style that would have the trim/tilt switches built in?

I had the same toggle switch setup on Phoenix my V-179 and was able to find a replacement handle with the switches built in so I now have the ability to trim without taking my hand off the wheel.

Yes that would make it allot easier to work the tilt & trim all of my boats have been that way.   The thing is that this Carlson is 43 years old and it’s a classic.  I love these old boats and it is important to me to keep it as original as possible.  That is why I am trying to get the switch plate’s wright and that is why I joined the Classic Glastron forum.  I also plan to join the association this spring when my boat is finished.

Would be very interested in hearing how you made the plastic dash, it looks very nice.

How about something like this ?

Where your ACC is is where my horn is and where your horn is is where my trim is.

I agree, keep it as original as possible!

Hope to get pictures tonight.

I actually have the original trim button.  I’m just wonder what they did with the switch panel in place of the tilt switch because my 72 Mercruiser has a separate tilt & trim button switch in a different location next to the control box.  Did they keep it on the dash too?   That would be two ways to tilt the outdrive.

As for the dash.  I made a fiber glass mold out of my brother in-laws broken 73 CV-16SS Volvo Penta.  I then cast a new dash, using carbon fiber.  It’s very strong and looks original.

I still have the mold and will be making a dash for another member that needs one for their 73 CV-16SS with the Volvo Penta.

Mercruiser has Trim and Tilt switches. Just like how the mercury 3 button  trim switch Gregg posted earlier does. The trim toggle moves it all the way down and up till the trim limit switches stops it from moving. When you want to go higher than that (tilt it out of the water) You lift up on both the trim and tilt toggles. So to answer your question, The Mercury tilt switch is where the Volvo tilt switch is on the Volvo plate. Does that make sense?

YA ! ... It looks GREAT !
Did you do the same for the glove box door and inside compartment ?

Can't offer much to the conversation about your problem/question, but I have to give a +1 to hyperacme's comment that your new dash with all the nice updates looks fabulous.  Nice work!

To answer Hyperacme’s question.  For my brother in-laws dash, I used the glove box door and the glove box from his old dash. (Picture of his is attached)

For my dash I had to make everything, I have a mold for the door as well.

I have also attached a picture of my trim switches.  The three buttons run the tilt and trim.  The out lifts it all the way out for trailering.  Nor sure why they would put an out switch on the dash too but maybe they did.

Here is the link to my google photo album.  I should finish it this winter.  All I have left is to wet sand and buff it, put the dash in, Put the new decals on, and do some fine tuning.

So Trim is the far left switch, then tilt, then blower on the left side of steering wheel.

Thanks Jason, for going through the trouble to get those picture.  It looks like they really changed the 74.

I still would love to see a 72 or 73 close up, if you guy's ever run across one let me know.

Thanks for your help.

Just some more food for thought on switching the control handle. I had the same exact handle in my v-179 you have. If you watch ebay you can find the period correct replacement handle with the trim/tilt switches. I will see if I have a picture of mine some where.

edit: found a pic

Thanks.

I’d love to see it, but I still want to keep this boat original, which mean using the same old cumbersome set up.

I don't blame you.

That is like. . . awesome!

Funny you took the floor out to the kick board, I did the same. Looks like you kept the original keel and then laminated it; good idea, as when I totally replaced mine the nonlinear taper in it was a bugger to fit and duplicate.

I think we need some more pics of the orange, but then again I'm just a little predjuce. :)

Thank goodness the original posters questions were answered . . . I think? . . . because we are veering off track here.

Dear Gregg

I think there is a chance you are color blind and cannot tell that there is no difference between apricot and orange. :).  (Unless your discussing mother Glastron/Carlson liturature)
LOL

Yeah it looks like my tread has been hijacked a little bit, but it took a great turn, I love it.

Awesome boat David.

I agree we do need more orange (Apricot) in here.  I do have carpet envy though.  After seeing that, I think I’m going to have to step up my game and find some orange carpet.  I gave up after looking for a long time and put dark grey in mine.

Yes. Laminating the Keel seemed to be the best choice since it was in pretty good shape anyway.  I just wanted to strengthen it, so I laminated it with ¾ inch marine grade plywood.  The picture doesn’t show it, but I did Fiberglas it in as well.

Just FYI

I’m still a little unsure about the switch plate, but I think that the general consensus is that Glastron also put the tilt or the out switch on the dash as well.  I still would like to see another 72 with the Mercruiser IO thou.

I have one, not very good picture of Tom V's CV16ss. I think it was a 73?
Maybe he has more?

I don't know if this helps but I just happen to have some CV16 V8 gauges and switches in my suite case lol.

Good Picture.  Thanks.  Do you know what year CV that they are from?  Dose the V8 have Tilt & Trim or just Tilt?

I can't tell you if it had tilt and trim or not. But I do know that it was a '75.

As long as we're talking dash's and color, here is a picture of my next project. It's a 73 cv-16 outboard and the dash is differant than the rest of the 73's I've seen and the color is gray but I think it's just faded and the color of the boat is red flake. and I've heard red wasn't an option in 73. What do you guys think about this?

This is interesting. These are identical to my CV16SS Mercruiser. If these are truly off a CV16V8 they would have the Volvo drive then. So did some Volvo's have power trim?

Even more interesting. I'd guess it's a 76 not a 73 in that configuration.

Jason ...
His CV has parts from every year of CV ... LOL
His serial number is 1973

NES ...
Were you able to buy that dash on eBay ?

I like the older style dash better then the newer one that wraps around bottom, and that style should work on all newer CV's.
Under dash plastic, mine is flake.
With a blank dash you could space out gauges so you could fit a water pressure gauge and it would still look good.
I love the wood glove box door ... But mine has a textured finish, that vinyl won't stick to
Wondering what it would look like with the whole face of dash in burl wood ?

Is it a huge deal to make dash boards now that you have the mold ... or a quick lay it up ... pop it out ... done deal ?

Yes they came of a CV16V8 with the Volvo setup. It had a 280 outdrive.
And yes the 290 has power trim.
Here is another pic of my buddy's old '73 CV16SS (also Volvo 280).

It’s pretty easy to lay up the dash now that I have the mold made.  I’m going to make one In January for someone that has a 73 CV-16SS that I met on another Glastron forum.  They are going to make the switch Plates for me.
As for the wood on the glove box.  I used the original glove box door for it when I made that dash and it was textured.  I took the back off of it and wrapped it around the inside and then glued the back piece back in again.  It’s been a year with no issues.
I have been toying around with the Idea of putting real burled oak on the front of the glove box and where the gauges are on my dash.  I think that it would look great but; I am haunted by my efforts to keep it original so I don’t think that I will do that.

Yes I did get the one off eBay, the guy said it was off a 75, I've seen lots of 73 dash' and they all seem to be differant than the on e on mine that's why I'm trying to find out which one to use..I did get the boat from the original owner so I don t think it's been changed. I didn't think the color was an issue untill I found out it wasn't available on 73' . It does have all the trim of a 73 including the "jetsons" stern light.
