Title: CVX-16, CSS-16 ride and ski capability

New member here. Kids are hot for one of these boats, and I have a few questions.

1. How do they ride in rough water? Huge boat wakes(surf boats, tubing, general traffic) here on weekends.

2. They are big guys(190 lbs), skiing at a high level. I see most with 115's, will they pull an adult at 36 mph with a 115?

These are just my opinions, but here goes.

These 16 foot boats are very light with very little draft and so, no they are not good in rough water.  The deeper, heavier draft boats are best in rough water. 

With a 115 hp motor your probably pushing low 50's for speed.  Depending on how old the motor is of course; with my very old Chrysler 120 (1973) I will get 41mph.  So you will need a newer vintage 115 to probably pull a skier at 36.

We do a lot of skiing (have had a GT-150, CVX-16SS, CVX-18 and CSS-19 over the years).  Agreed that those hulls do not do well in rough water; however, they are amazing hulls to ski behind in decent water (very little wake to cross).  IMO a 115 would not be enough power to pull a 190 lb. skier out of the water (top speed is never your problem); that's what we had on the GT-150 and it struggled to get us out at ~150 lbs.

Of everything I've skied behind my favorite so far is the CVX-18 with a 228 I/O and a Mercury High Five prop.  Enough power to get people out smoothly, and a near perfect wake in everything but rough water.

Thank you both. I now see a CVX-16 with a Merc 140 outboard listed; that would probably be better.

Follow on question. What is the difference between the CVX-16, and the CSS-16?

My CVX 16 OB has a 140 Loop charged Johnson.  Used to have a 6 cyl Merc which I thought had more torque.  If you keep your  knees slightly bent and keep a steep angle through the wakes it has a good wake.  But not as good as a good tournament ski boat, in my opinion.  You may need a 17 pitch cupped OMC prop rather than a 19 inch for skiing.

In 1989 G/C changed name from CVX to CSS, looks like same style as CVX's.
In 1992 the CSS got a SS railing down center of deck and Metric style windshield.
Unsure if there were any hull changes.

One of the biggest beefs about my CVX16 for watersports was trying to get back in it out in the middle of the lake. I was one of the few people that could actually do it & my buddy hurt himself trying it.

If your dead set on a CVX16 just take that into consideration. Also for slalom skiing, I was never that impressed with the wake it threw out. An OB  16' SSV will have a smaller, flatter wake. I've slalom ski'd behind both, no comparison.
