416 is a fine chromium steel, should work great.   Post a picture if you could of the old and new parts with a little write up, would be handy as a technical reference for anyone else that might run into a similar problem.

Sorry, but I didn't take any pictures, and it's all back together now and working fine.   My original part doesn't look like anything I could find for the '73 vintage 115 Evinrude, nor does it look like the picture in my genuine '73 Evinrude Service Manual, so I don't know what I've got!   I re-designed my new part to fit my housing better, so it's unlikely anybody else will need one like mine!   The original appears to be a construction of concentric sleeves, pinned together.   My new part is a single piece.

After owning a couple of older Mercury o/b's for many years, and now working on an Evinrude, I have decided that I prefer the Mercury design engineering!     8)
