Off topic boat recommendations
« on: July 17, 2017, 08:04:17 PM »
Well after 34 years with the cvx16. I have come to the decision I need a bigger boat,  I feel I can get an 18 to 19  ft boat in my garage.  More and more we go to the lake and anchor compared to going to a beach.  It needs to be able to hold a tube, some wake boards, and a beer cooler.  My brother has a 20 ft Mariah, but he recommends a Crown line.  I would consider a project but new us out if the question.  I don't want a 4 cylinder, but would like advice on the 4.3 or the 5.0,  I would consider an outboard as well.

My question to you what would you buy.

Not selling the Carlson, probable be a  two boat family for awhile..

New or Used?

New...I really like the Bayliner Element XL (18ft) or Element 21.  (Everyone can flame me for that...) but...if you want to spend a day on the water, with room for people & gear...tough to beat.  Trailer comes with fold-away tongue, 4-Stroke OB.

Used...any deck boat...Glastron & Larson have some nice ones.  Again, lots of room for gear & everyone.

Larson SEI 180 with a 4.3

We had a 2001 model we bought new and had it till I bought my CV16 a few years ago.  They are very, very nice boats.  Don't even look at a 3.0 Liter though, not worth it.  The 4.3 will do about 55 with one person onboard and 52 with six on board, and it gets there in a hurry.  If you buy a 5.0L different machine they are typically much heavier machines; not any faster though, but better in big water with bigger waves.

A nice Larson 180 that is 10 years old is about $12,500.  An incredible value considering the price of new powerboats.

Best of luck.

Crownline has some fantastic boats, but will be on the higher price end.  You talked about anchoring instead of beaching, and lounging more than top speed.  I'd take a look at a deck boat or an outboard pontoon if top speed is not the main focus.  We had a 24' pontoon with a merc 90 and pulled multiple skiers and tubes with ease.  Was a floating living room when the family was young.  Look around, talk to folks who are anchored and having fun, boaters are generally friendly and will discuss the boat options.

Well now this is a subject I am all too familiar with, having owned sometimes as many as 19 or 20 boats at a time ( who counts anyway ) I can say I liked every one and each one filled a need at the time. However the one thing that has remained consistent over the last 30 years is that our pontoon is by far the most used boat in the fleet, if I had to choose to keep just one boat it would have to be the 22 ft Lowe pontoon.

how important are watersports in your plan?  Water Ski, Wake Board, Wake Skate, Wake Surf?  The Diamond 21 hull is the best all purpose ski/wake hull made.  If the 100 hours claim on this is legitimate, its a brand new boat. V drive inboard is a completely different ride/drive than an I/O.  You almost won't believe it.
