Controls are backwards!

1989 mercruiser - alpha 1.  Controls are backwards... Forward is reverse and reverse is forwards.. Does anyone know how to change them?  Is it in the control box on the helm or the cables on the motor that has the cables mixed up? Check pictures.

What does the trim do? Does that work correctly?

It's normally cable controlled as far as I know but not 100% sure on that type of controller, have you changed something, what work has been done or has it just changed itself?

New boat for me first time in water..  Trim works normal..  Guy said he had a new throttle cable just put in... I wonder if When they put it back togather they put a cable in the wrong spot?

Sounds about right, I noticed you had a new upper cable in, you can see it's new, maybe it works on a at 18:00hrs rather than 12:00hrs or the reversed. That would be my bet!

Take photos of the cables on WOT and then in Reverse and see what it looks like, then you should be able to see if they are wrong or if they can be reversed.

Can you access the back of the control and check their movement direction? Did something change or you bought it that way? Totally different animal but when I got my jet some of the cams on the back of the controller had been put back together wrong

You'll most likley have to pull the control box out, open it and switch the shift cable to the other side of the lever/cam.

Cables are the same, and if the control was disassembled, could have several things wrong.  First thing I'd check is pull the lockout to operate throttle only, if it shifts, but not move the throttle, that should help narrow it down.

i had this issue but it was a 90hp merc outboard. The shift cam in the lower unit was backwards.

Looks to be the control box. Going to pull it off and see what's inside.  Wih the older controls on the motor you can see where someone could have put the cables on the wrong side of a cam but not this one.

Before you do that, check the connection at the engine, as I said before if the connection there is at 12 O'clock when it should be at 6 O'clock the action will be reversed!

It was in the control.. Same thing you talked about on the motor side but with this newer control the cam is inside. You can see in the picture where my finger is now forward is forward and reverse is reverse. With the cable was on the same side as the throttle cable and was backwards.   Now on to the next problem..
