1973 olds 455 berkeley packajet on CV21SS
« on: August 30, 2017, 12:52:44 AM »
Hi guys, I am a newby from Italy, and need some help from you while overhauling my motor.
I have a list of parts to buy: does anybody tell me where to buy online?
Here the list:
- Oil pan and gasket
- Polished Aluminum Water Outlet Divider Tee
- Electric Choke Conversion Rochester Quadrajet Carburetor
- Choke Block-Off Plates (2 pcs) to seal off the choke towers on the intake manifold
- Oil dipstick with tube
- Oil filler tube
- Intake manifold with gasket
- Thermostat with housing
- Oil cooler
- Oil filter (2 pcs)
Valve covers gaskets (2 pcs)
I noted that there is oil below the two heads, on flywheel side: do you think it is worth to replace the two head gasket, or a small leak is just usual and do not need such a huge job?
Thank you for your help!

Welcome!   Try Summit Racing ,JEGS or CP Performance . Summit seems to have more parts for the 455 Olds . quadrajetparts.com. for carb. parts and your elect. choke .  The oil leak maybe from the back of the intake manifold gasket or valve cover gasket . The head gaskets sometimes stick out a little and that's were the oil collects as it runs down . If there was oil in the bilge that's where it would show up from the flywheel slinging it.

Welcome pietro62, post some pictures of your engine so we can get a better idea of the parts you need . Most of the engine parts are readily available however some of the marine parts are no longer made and sometimes very hard to find . This is my CV21 thread here with the last page showing my 455 Olds , I can pretty much point out all the parts you may need and where to get them . Good luck . Gil

Hello,
I wanted to comment that if a need for another carburetor is found, that we have an excellent marine 455 Olds Quadrajet original carburetor for a Berkeley Jet application, which can be viewed (with three pictures, and additional pictures can be e-mailed) on this page of our website, third item up from the bottom of the page: http://fergusonpoolemarine.com/fuelsystemparts.html

I think that we also have a distributor unit, tune-up parts, an alternator, and some small engine parts/bits and Berkeley parts/bits as well.

Good Luck,
Joe

GIL!!!!
Your engine is a beauty, I can divorce to have it in my bed at night!
I am ashamed of how my one is now, and surely I am not on the way to your level, I have a lower budget.
As I recently discussed with Glenn, I am gathering some parts to refresh the engine.
We have partially solved many doubts, now I am not succeding in finding an electric choke conv kit, as the stock choke is in very weird conditions, and I attach here a pic of it

https://postimg.org/image/w1548r3id/

do you see the cracked choke plate and the alluminium foil rolled around the tube?
As I am buying a new intake manifold (by the way, this is the right one?

http://www.cpperformance.com/p-12693-olds-torker-455-manifold.aspx

), I would like to pull the old choke and its tube and freplace it with an electric one, and seal the choke tower with a new plate, but I am not finding the right conv kit.
Glenn is retired, so I can annoy him when I want, so he said: what about you? Be sure that your help will mean a trip on my cv21 on some Italian lake whenever you will make a trip here!
Pietro

Hello,
The choke tube is suppose to have a white fabric sleeve over it to insulate it, instead of the aluminum foil of course.  I think that we do have a new old stock one (sleeve/insulator).

That's not the best intake for a stock or close to stock motor. The performer intake would be better. Remember your engine will only turn about 4700 RPM stock and with the restrictive exhaust manifolds flow is highly restrictive over auto usage .With performance mods and open style headers then you can use that manifold. You don't need to seal that area around the choke cover on the intake if you remove it , doesn't go through the intake. My pict. is a little different style choke but shows whats under cover. Carbs Unlimited is another place that has elect. choke conversions for Qjets.

I forgot about this one. This maybe yours and it does go into the manifold. Fusick Olds is the source for it.
