Planing at low speeds
« on: September 16, 2017, 04:03:31 AM »
So rather than talk about the project - I thought I’d talk about the plan... i want to take next year the cvx16 (when restored) with the 90hp i6 (when serviced) to lake Windermere here in the uk... only problem is it’s has a 11.5mph speed limit and there are rangers with radars all around with s minimum £400 fine... I’m not sure what the leeway is but I’d hope you could get away with 12mph... now the question - what would I need to do with a medium to light load to get her to plane at this speed?

My CVX-16 does not get up on a plane until 20 MPH with the 115 HP Johnson. Tuck the motor in as close to the hull as you can to the transom, shift weight to the front, and use a low pitch prop for fine adjustment of motor speeds. Maybe use a four blade prop. And get an accurate GPS. I doubt your boat will plane at 11.5 MPH. The best you can do is plow at this speed.

Yea it’s the dumbest speed limit ever at least the lower place near me are 15 so you can just get on the plane and the wake is actually less than as a cheese wedge. I was thinking 4 blade lower pitch and a full tank of gas to keep the bow downs

Dave ...
What is your speed in a "No Wake" zone ?
Guess I've never looked ...
Has to be under 10 mph, maybe 5 mph.

ours too, minimum speed on plane is about 20 mph.  Starts to fall off of plane anywhere below that.

My cvz-18 will slowly fall off plane if I drop below 25 mph.  My two cvx-16's were similar, not much chance of a comfortable plane under 20 mph.  Personally, I'd find a pond that you could use your craft as it's designed for.   11mph?  I wonder where they came up with that speed?

I would say that 5 MPH would be right. A boat can go pretty slow at idle.

Apparently it’s because the locals don’t want the noise of the boats and it was meant to be 10mph but it was passed as 10knots - nothing to do with wake which is a joke... I have some 15-20mph stretches outside my house I will mainly stick to them like I do with existing boat but thought this little thing would be good for exploring ... I don’t imagine the i6 does that well on gas at 5mph

you know an inboard V drive wake boat with a tower filled with speakers, ballast bags full, and wedge deployed can kick a 5 foot curl for wake surfing at about 11.5 mph.  Wonder how they would like that on their lake.   I think much rather have a CVX gastron zip by at 50.

I agree! I didn’t realise the deep v made it that bad I have a fastrac hull which seem good on the wake for an onboard
