Title: Billy Bob's CB
Post by: wc351 on October 24, 2020, 07:24:39 AM
Does anyone know what the CB radio is in Billy Bob's boat?

Tough question, wasted some time looking for an answer, but no luck.  The blue box on the left is a Federal signal pa-20a, siren driver, but its missing the microphone for pa use.  It's difficult since it may have been a prop.  Law enforcement has always liked batwings (motorola) equipment, so I would expect to see a Motrac head along with the pa 20.   Now given the timeframe, it could be a cb radio, but Billy Bob was some form of law enforcement, ranger, la fish and wildlife maybe.  Given that, the long antennas, and the period, they would likely have operated commercial radios on low band, 39.9 mhz, mutual aid on 39.98.  The radio microphone doesn't have the shape of motorola, GE, midland, Standard, Royce, RCA, lafayette, pace, cobra, or Johnson.     Lettering on radio and microphone is not legible when zoomed in.
Curious to know why the interest, building a billy bob cv21?

No plans to build a Billy Bob. I know there was a Billy Bob boat built a while back but it had a LS motor in it, personally would have liked to have seen a built Olds. Had a good friend asking me about it and after a lot of research myself I was coming up short. I thought someone here might know. I was racking my brain on the radio because I had never seen one like it myself. Thanks for the reply.

Watch a TV show on restoring the "Back to the future" DeLorean the other night, they got most of the original parts from local surplus stores.

I have multiple antique malls near me and I have thought about just scouring through them to see what I can find. I still get amazed at what I find in them.

Haha, that would be why they could find all the parts in a surplus store. Each piece was taken apart rather quickly.

Yep, definitely a Federal Siren driver.  I would also agree with Mike that that radio has the standard Motorola white plastic case of that era.

Got it!

Its a VHF Marine radio (duh)...though the Billy Bob model appears to be older with the selector dial vs. led channel number display.

There's appears to be a more 'basic' model on ebay.  Can be yours for $100.

That is amazing you found that.  I found several motorola models with similar features, but never found a real match.  I worked in a radio shop in Omaha repairing comm radios for about five years, but never had any marine radios come across the bench.  I suppose it would make sense being in close proximity to the gulf and Mississippi River to have vhf.  I tried searching for marine units as well.  Nice little treasure hunt.

Good job Doran !
I was searching "CB radios" ..
Never thought to search "Marine band" ..
Now ya just need to find a CV21 to put it in ..   ::)

They said they had three DeLorean's for original movie. One nice one for close up's, one without all the details for driving, and one cut in half to do close up's of Marty and Doc driving around.
