Title: HECK OF A RIDE.THROTTLE PROBLEMS
Post by: terry on June 26, 2010, 10:00:49 AM
WE HAD THE BOAT OUT LAST NIGHT AND WERE RUNNING IT AROUND ARE LOCAL LAKE AND I HAD IT WIDE OPEN AND WENT TO SLOW DOWN AND THE BOAT KEPT FULL SPEED,I HAD TO PULL THE KEY TO SHUT IT DOWN.THE THROTTLE MOVED FREE WITH NO BINDING TO NEATUARL,BUT WHEN I WENT TO START THE BOAT IT REVED TO LIKE 5000 RPM.I WORKED THE CONTROLS AND GOT IT TO WERE IT IDLED AT 900 RPM THEN IT RAN FINE.HAD IT HAPPEN TWICE WHILE OUT.I CHECKED ALL MY LINKAGE,THROTTLE,CARBS ETC FOR BENT OR BROKEN PARTS,OR ANYTHING THAT MAY OR COULD CAUSE BINDING,I FOUND NOTHING.I WAS TOLD THAT JOHNSON USES PLASTIC ARMS WITH SPRINGS TO ADVANCE THE FLYWHEEL?WAS TOLD A SPING MAY BE STICKING.THAT MAY MAKE SENSE WITH THE THE BOAT AT 5000 RPM IN NEATURAL.EACH TIME THIS HAPPEN I WOULD WORK THE CONTROLS BACK AND FORTH TILL I COULD GET IT WERE IT WOULD COME BACK TO 900 RPM.ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS.THANKS

I would also check that throttle cable to make sure it's pulling your throttle linkage closed. Have someone hold the linkage on the engine while you move the throttle control to make sure the cable is pushing and pulling without slipping. I've seen control cables go bad like that and I've seen control boxes go bad too. Check them both.

this is why I drive a Mercury! 8)

are you able to grease your throttle leakage?  That's where I would look........that and the flywheel issue.
