V172 Hidden Treasure
« on: May 02, 2011, 08:18:47 PM »
I was taking pictures behind the side panel on the V172 today to check out the control box. Found this cool hidden treasure. How old do you think this is? Boat's a 1967.

All I ever find are old rusty fish hooks and an occasional bobber.

Oh and two frost plugs once.  :P

Yes, remember buying that color of can by the case for the 80 HP Mercury in 1971 and beyond. Hallberg Marine always had an oil special in the spring and so did Supreme Motors. A case of 24 cans was about $28.00. But that is TC-2 oil. Use only TC-3 now.

How many of us, while cleaning out a car to junk or sell, find treasures - money, combs, etc.

So you think early to mid 70's Dave? That's kind of what I assumed. I don't ever remember steal oil cans. What do you do if you only need half a can?????

A 16 ounce can with a 50 to 1 ratio gas-oil mix equals one can for a 6 gallon tank. I always used it for outboards with the 6 gallon tanks so never had a problem. For internal gas tanks it would be more difficult. One might have a pourable upright 6 gallon gas container premixed with the one can of oil, and pour this mixture into the internal gas tank since you would not know how many gallons would "top off" the gas tank. I imagine that many people had more than one of these 6 galion gas containers premixed with oil. An internal tank might hold 18 gallons?

I buy the Mercury Premium Plus outboard oil by the gallon, and fill 8 Mercury 16 ounce containers ready for six gallon tanks. Oil is cheaper by the gallon than by the pint, and I am cheap, or should I say always trying to stretch the dollar.

Welcome to "The Frugal Club" David.  I do the same, but use quart bottles because I run a 12 gal tank my Starflite.  ( Thirsty Johnson V4, ya know.)   ;)

Cool! Thanks Brian for finding that out for me. 30 years is still a pretty long time for that can to be hanging out down there.

I've had the advertising brochure tucked inside my '77 1150 owners manual for a long, long time.  Probably got it when I bought some oil.  Had some trouble posting the images so Gregg, the computer guru, helped me out.
