V172 Gelcoat work
« on: June 28, 2011, 10:59:38 PM »
Since I bought this boat last fall it has had a few areas in the gelcoat that needed some attention.

Went down to Express Composites a couple weeks ago. Great people. They spent a lot of time trying to match the color as close as they could. They did a great job on the cream color but I may try and darken they green a little more.

After applying the gelcoat a little wet sanding is all it took. I was able to wet sand out some stains in the green gelcoat too. Looks great now!

BEFORE:

$24 buffer from Harbor Frieght and $25 3M all in one buffing compound and wax.

AFTER:

But then i got to thinking about the fiberglass work that had been done to the bottom of the boat and all the algae I got off the bottom of the boat. Figured it must have taken on some water before the fiberglass work was done. So I drilled a few holes only to find sitting pools of water below the floor and soaking wet wood. Soooooo. looks like a new floor is next in line.

Looks great!  Probably the best $24 you ever spent with the purchase of the buffer. That's the one I have and you beat me by $5 on yours. Heck of a deal and works just as well as the $100 + models.

Great work on the fiberglass work Jason. Sure beats White Bear Boatworks doing it at their $110 per hour rate. Doing it yourself also brings satisfaction and the knowledge that if it happens again, I can fix it. Wish I had painted the lower unit of the 1988 Merc rather than outsourcing it after painting the lower unit of the 1974 Merc with good results.

expresscomposites.com lists everything you need to contact them or see what they have to offer.  A great bunch of people to work with.  I won't go anywhere else

The compound probably cost about as much as the buffer!
Great work. Did you pull the boat to EC for the color matching?
How did you apply the gelcoat?

Wax was $25 so it was MORE than the buffer!

Yea, I pulled it to Express Composites for color Matching.

Applying was easy.
Sand the surface to get it clean and smooth.
Wipe with Acetone to get it really clean.
Mix gel coat with MEAK and wax.
Brush on with a cheap brush.
Let cure for a couple hours.
Then sand with 220 then gradually to 1000 grit paper.
Then buff.
