1975 V 195 It has a Ford 302 and Volvo drive. About 2 years ago I developed a sporadic problem where the engine would die. It starts and runs fine. Then after driving above 3,000 rpm for a little while it will suddenly sputter and die like you are turning the key on and off. I can pull the throttle into neutral and it starts right back up with no cranking, just fires right up. I can do this before the boat even comes off of plane. Then hit the throttle again and away it goes for about 2-300 yards then will do it again. It only seems to do it when it is in gear on plane at above 3,000 rpm. Sometimes if I pull the throttle back quick enough it wont die, then I can take off again and it will do it again in about 200 yards. In Neutral at the dock it will sit and run over 3,000 rpm without a problem it seems( unless I just have run it long enough at the dock..
So far I have installed a new HEI style distributor (removed old points style system, no change in problem), different fuel pump(no change), test the fuel pressure (stays the same 4psi when it dies), tried running from a different fresh tank(to rule out water contamination), checked timing, opened up the carb(looks clean) looked at fuel filter(good), tried wiggling the key when it is dying to see if that would make a difference(it didn't). We also ran across the lake with the timing light hooked up to see if the spark would shut off and it did not seem to.
I am out of things to try. As I said when it dies it immediately fires right back up no cranking or pumping the throttle. The warmer the engine gets it seems to get a worse, meaning does it more frequently.
Anyone have any Ideas?
