Title: 1974 CV-16
Post by: ces308 on December 25, 2019, 11:41:22 AM
Hello !  I am a new member here and have a 1974 CV-16 that I have owned since new !  I am taking care of her needs that 46 years have taken from her. Everything was pretty good but for the transom I just replaced. I need to do some metal flaking to repair what was fixed. Does anyone know what color flake will match the green they used in'74??

Thank you for any information you mite have!

I raised the transom height 2” for the prop I’m running on my 115hp Mercury....prop is a 14x22 super cup prop. It now puts my cavitation plate even with the bottom.

Thanks Greg. I ordered some lime greed squeezer.... I think that might work . I’m hoping I can paint and blend if it’s close enough.... I’ll update as it progresses..

You could also try vintage flake. He sells stuff for old snowmobiles.  I bought mine from him he is the only one I could find that carried square flake. Most likely that is what is on your boat.

Is this the company you got yours from Jeff ?
https://www.ebay.com/str/Vintage-Sled-Paint?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

I have my cavitation plate is about 2 inches above bottom of hull, works pretty good.
Also running a 22P Laser II prop, getting 52 to 54 mph / GPS.

CV-16 update..... I’ve been busy working on the boat... finally got it painted! I ended up using Moss green .015 metal flake and the match was good ! Once I paint under the splash well I will start installing the carpet. I found the burl wood vinyl fabric for the seat bottoms and it looks like it’s supposed to! If anyone is looking for something like that, let me know. Here are some pictures of what I’ve been doing....

Pickle Rocket!   Looks fantastic, great idea on the transom raising, looks like it might also help keep some of the water out of the splash well.  Let us know how that works out when you get it out on the water.

Looks GREAT !
See you still have the wood decal on side !
With motor lifted are you still able to use your cable steering ?

I found this Burl wood a few years ago, pretty close match.

Hello Greg... I found some of the Burl Wood vinyl fabric from a place in Chicago and bought 3 yards of it for the seat bottoms and it's a good match. my side wood is good.  What thickness is your transom plate? I want to bend one up for mine before I install the engine.

Plate .. I think your referring to .. is a "Transom Wedge" ..
https://thmarinesupplies.com/collections/cmc-marine-products/products/cmc-transom-wedges-2-degree

After lifting my motor, tilt cylinder was blocking splash well drain hole, this was the cheapest & easiest way to get clearance.
Also have one on inside of splash well.

Machined Transom Support Plates ..

Wish I had known about this one .. Might get one some day ..

Greg ...the wrap you putting on...is that stick on  like paper?  I tried some stuff that ended up being a shelf liner and it would rip. This is the place I got mine from and it's just like the original....   http://ifscoind.com/productDetail.asp_Q_catID_E_128_A_subCatID_E_735_A_productID_E_15400
I'm using a 3m spray adhesive to glue it down and stapling all the edges.  I started with the side pieces to get the hang of putting it on and it's  working good !
I'll have pictures tomorrow..

Burl wood was pretty thick plastic stuff with a paper backing that peeled off with sticky surface.
Didn't stick to resin coated seat bases well, so used staples.
After some uses I noted that seat bottoms were wearing away of burl wood .. So covered edges with duct tape.

Wow ! Looks nice ! Did you have the seats redone or is that original?  Looks like you laid your carpet in all one piece?  Any problems doing that ? Mine was originally  done in 2 pieces with a seam in the middle with a plastic H piece joining them...
Title: Re: 1974 CV-16
Post by: Hyperacme on February 20, 2020, 08:59:03 AM
I just got cheap indoor/outdoor carpet from Home Depot.  It was long and wide enough to do in one piece. The seats cover most of the floor to hold it down, so I used carpet tape to stick it down around certain spots. Worked well and is easy to replace when carpet wears out or gets burn, stains, etc.
Title: Re: 1974 CV-16
Post by: Hyperacme on February 20, 2020, 09:15:43 AM
Yes.. seats were redone ..
First three pictures are what the 1976 CV16 seats should look like.
Would have cost to much to have quilted pattern done and also very very hard to line everything up.

Next picture is seats that came with boat when I got it .. cheap none marine vinyl.
It was hard to get patterns off them, and made thing hard for my Buddy to copy.
He had to make quite a few adjustment.
Pleats on three of the seat bottoms line up perfect with seat backs .. Last seat was way off .. drove him nuts .. LOL
Side padding was easy .. I did them myself, he made transom curtain though ..

Nice and neat !   Do you hydraulic  steering??
Title: Re: 1974 CV-16
Post by: Hyperacme on February 20, 2020, 12:25:35 PM
Yes .. Baystar ..
That is why I asked you about steering, with my motor lifted there was no way a steering cable would work without cutting holes in splash well. It about double the price of NFB .. but worth every penny IMO.
Title: Re: 1974 CV-16
Post by: ces308 on February 23, 2020, 09:34:39 AM
Hello ! I stared installing the carpet yesterday... I got the forward foot piece done and the 2 rear side pieces glued in . Now I need to trim the main floor carpet and glue that in . I do need to cut a hole for my steering rod that goes to the engine... I had a hole there but glassed it in to make a nice clean new one.
I like your black piece you have your cables going through. Keeps the water out too! Lol
Should have the carpet in next week then I finish the seat bottoms. I can’t wait to get her back in the water again!
Title: Re: 1974 CV-16
Post by: Hyperacme on February 23, 2020, 01:30:47 PM
NICE !
Looks like original style carpet ..
The black grommet thing for where steering cable comes out of splash well, came on boat, but have seen them on all boat dealer parts catalogs and online marine shops.
When I did the side panels for splash well, I spent a good hour trimming and stapling carpet to panels .. Then found I did both on same side, so had to redo one .. LOL

I've seen cable routing like this on some boats with jack plates.
Title: Re: 1974 CV-16
Post by: ces308 on February 26, 2020, 08:15:06 PM
Hi ! I looked for 2 years to find a carpet close to the original and I am very happy with this! About where your steering goes through, I did have to cut into the original hole and raise it . When I raised the transom, i glassed in the hole so I could cut a nice one where it needs to be.
The carpet is done ! Boy you can get a pretty good buzz on using that trim adhesive laying in the bottom smoothing it out ! Lol  Seat bottoms are next !
Is the orange boat yours too?   Ever think about clearing the upper part of the boat?
Title: Re: 1974 CV-16
Post by: Hyperacme on February 27, 2020, 08:41:50 AM
Carpet looks GREAT !
Do you have a link to were you found it ?
No .. Orange CVX16 is some guy on FB.

When I got my CV it was pretty dull and faded, use 800 thru 3000 wet sanding, then "3M Finesse it 2" then wax.
Shine came back to almost original. The color and shine were very close to what was under bow light and windshield trim.
You could try some heavy compound / FI2 / wax and see if shine comes back.
What do you mean by clear ? Clear gel or some kind of plastic paint sealer ?

Everything is looking great!

Where did you get the carpet? When I replaced my green carpet I had a heck of a time finding anything original and ended up getting some nice stuff from Home Depot but not 100% original.

Did you re paint/gel just the transom and blend it in or do the entire boat?
Title: Re: 1974 CV-16
Post by: ces308 on February 27, 2020, 12:33:32 PM
Hello... I got the carpet from this https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F163322492515

It’s called Holly Leaf green .. I bought a 9x12 piece.
I only flaked the transom, splash well and blended the top rear side decks. The rest are just cleared. The problem I had with the rest was the tips of the original flake was coming threw . A had a few stress cracks in the white so I fixed them and painted the white then cleared everything.

If you can run water over your deck and it look good, you can sand and clear it... clear gelcoat is a mess and TONS of work after it on!

Thanks! One thing I forgot was where the rear side panels bolt on.... mine just had a screw going into the very rear bottom of the rear seat bottom.... I removed that corner of the upholstery and installed a 1/4 20 blind/ t nut on the inside to bolt that piece to.
Those nuts you were talking about....you mean the upper ones?

Title: Re: 1974 CV-16
Post by: Hyperacme on February 29, 2020, 10:52:23 AM
The control board side is the worst to get to nuts. Guess I could have removed throttle control from board so there was more room to get to seat to deck nuts. The lower throttle board bolts look like they were installed from factory, mine is a 1976 so could have started doing it on later models.

I have a list of HIN & serial numbers ..Wonder if I could get yours .. No personal info is listed ..

Ok....now I know what you’re talking about with the nuts....right side rear...no problem....right side front... problem ... I have to re-remove my controls to get at it... I’m guessing the seat just fell off when I took it apart...lol

The HIN is GCV02070M74F...... I bought it in august of ‘74.  Got my seats in ! I’m going to build new rear side panels.... just don’t like the way they look.... I should have marked which one was which ... not a big deal to make.

Yes...I thought I cover them on the correct side, but I see marks where the staples were..... I need a favor... if your bour is where you can get at it, could you measure your seat bottoms at the back and tell me how wide? Mine are 17 5/8..... I’m not sure if I have them on the wrong sides... the way I have mine it’s wide in the back and narrow in the front....dummy me didn’t mark them when I took them out. 🤬

All four of mine are 17 x 20 .. give or take a bit.
I marked mine on the bottom when I installed the little wood block that hold them to bases, each side was a little different.

All measurements are here ..

Also ..
You can find the top metal trim piece for side pockets at your local home improvement store in the flooring / tile dept. It's tile transition trim.

Original (seat cushion bottoms) were just untreated or uncoated plywood.
They were rotted and cracking in the center.

All four bottom seat bases cushions are the same or are you referring to the bases that attach to floor ?
Measurements for floor to seat bases ..

Post by: ces308 on February 29, 2020, 06:56:53 PM
Cool . Thanks... they just didn’t seem to fit right on the floor.... buy I think I know what I did wrong....I need you to push up on the side before I bolt them on the top...that would bring in the inside bottom.
Thanks for checking for me .!

Post by: Hyperacme on February 29, 2020, 07:13:15 PM
OK .. Took me a bit to figure out what your talking about.
Right or left seat to floor base ..
When I replaced my carpet, I put screws for seat base to floor, in floor then with knife cut slits to get at screws.
That way I was able to use same holes and everything lined up.
I did mark the bases before removing them though.

Cool pictures!  I’m hoping to get up there for one of your events maybe next year. This summer we are taking the little red boat to Hessel, Mi for the wooden boat show, but next year we’ll try your event. It sounds like fun! Plus it would be cool to see all the different Glastrons. My dads last boat was a Glastron! It was the 26’ Adventurer cabin cruise with twin  Ford V8’s. I’ll find a picture and post it.
I enjoyed your CV history too!

I seen a few of the late 50's cabin cruisers (Seaflite Seville cruiser) but have never seen a early to mid 60's I/O cruiser.
Might be listed as something other then Glastron .. or they totally rotted out and were scrapped.
Maybe only 4 or 5 Saberflite also ..

Dads Adventurer was a straight inboard. That boat was built like a battle ship ! The hull was about  1 1/4” thick and she weighed 6-8 thousand lbs! Twin Fords pushed her about 25 mph.
On my boat , that was a Mark 25 Mercury... I think it was 20 hp... she’d run 32 mph.

Finished my side boards.... polished the trim that goes on top. The filler piece that goes across the back I decided to use a piece of the carpet I had left over. I’m taking it to this guy to put a boarder around the edge to finish it off.... also glued a piece of vinyl to the back for support.

Here are some pix of how the engine hangs on the transom.
