Title: CVX18 Floor rebuild
Post by: GT150 JEFF on November 07, 2010, 11:24:29 AM
Ok winter is here and the floor in the cvx needed to be replaced.
Had several soft spots.
Removed the carpet to find a crack where the floor meets the outer part of the boat on the starboard side.
Further examination after floor removed is that the stringer needs to replaced on that side.

Jeff - One is better than all three. Looks like you also removed the flotation boxes in the corners. Are you gonna leave them out for engine access?

Kip you are right about the one hopin it was none.

The flotation box's are history along with 8 bags of foam

Not sure what to do, but I think they will go back in only deeper, hate to give up the storage plus I need a shelf on each side for the battery and trim pump.

But I am open for suggestions from anybody.

Looking good, good to hear it is only one stringer. Are you and Kip both replacing floors this year? Are you going to do anymore engine work this year?

Buddy you are getting busy!  Now the fun begins.  Whats happening with the thru hull?

Post by: CVX Fever on November 08, 2010, 11:52:09 AM
Shaun I should be replacing my floor as it's a lot worse than Jeff's was. But not this winter. Maybe next year when I have the motor and drive out it.
Title: Re: CVX18 Floor rebuild
Post by: GT150 JEFF on November 08, 2010, 04:28:32 PM
Well the motor has to come out anyway, I removed all the flotation boxes and 7 bags of foam, going to rebuild the boxes but in a different way.

So with the engine removed will put in the thru hull at that time.

First I have to take care of replacement of the stringer, floor then boxes finally thru hull.

Jeff - Can't wait to hear how your boat will sound next summer w/thru hull.! Your goal needs to be passing the 70 MPH marker! 8)

Good work so far Jeff! I just replaced my floor and a couple (unbelievably rotted) stringers and was thrilled with the results - definitely worth the work. Please let me know when you're doing the thru hull - I'd really appreciate a chance to come check out your work in person and get some ideas for my 23. Keep it up bud!

Jeff: Did you make any progress this weekend?
Title: Re: CVX18 Floor rebuild
Post by: GT150 JEFF on November 15, 2010, 06:42:17 PM
Andy

Just finished glassing in the stringer in tonight.

Will get some plywood for the floor this week and start fitting that soon.

I removed all the flotation boxes so will have to rebuild all that also, but going to lower the floor in them to gain more storage. Maybe you have some good ideas.

Then it will be in and out with the engine several times to get the exhaust right.

Jeff, Hoo-Ah!  All that work is going to pay off big time.  I like the idea of a shortened flotation box with a little storage.

Jeff, consider a snap in carpet with rugged backing made by Corinthian Carpet. Mine does not need snaps, just fits and stays in place. Afton marine sells it, or you can buy direct from Corinthian Carpet. Great to take out the carpet when doing dirty mechanical work on the engines, to dry out, vacuum, and store indoors in the winter time. Universal Textiles in Oakdale can edge it for you after it is cut out from the template pattern. I glassed the floor with two coats of resin before the carpet.

My first choice on the laid down fitted carpet would be Corinthian as they supply carpet to some of the big boat manufactors. Request a sample and check it against your existing boat interior colors. If they do not have the color you want, try Rockford in the Twin Cities. They sell a variety of laid down carpets and have a display showroom. But I compared the backings of the two suppliers and thought Corinthian was the best constructed. The total cost of my carpet was around $300; $230 for the carpet and $75 for the cutting and the stitching.

I bought the carpet in bulk from Afton Marine and made a template of the floor area and brought both to Universal Textiles to cut and bind, although Corinthian or Afton Marine will cut and bind it for you, but it will cost alot more.

Rochford seems to have moved from 94 and Broadway, to Brooklyn Park.

I don't want to hijack Jeffs thread anymore. I saw that green too Brian. Looks like it might be too dark but may be a good canidate. I am going to look for the closet to original as possible. I'll have to get a sample of that stuff.

Anxious to see how you do the exhaust but I imagine that will be a bit later.

Ross

Stringer, floor and new boxes in back are all in and painted.

Ready to test fit the motor and drill some hole in the tramsom.

Should get to the exhaust in between Christmas and New Years as I am off work that week.

And if there is Christmas goodies under the tree will have to do something with them.

Carpet sometime in Feb.

Jeff

Jeff, you are going to completely transform that boat from top to bottom, from inside to outside. But both you and old Red are good at leading us on by not reveiling the whole picture at once, with sentences like  "And if there is Christmas goodies under the tree will have to do something with them" LOL

You're fast! Nice work! Looks awesome.
Looks to be a bit late but I came across this set up where you could retain the thru prop and have thru hull exhaust if one wanted to. I guess its inteneded more for someone not pulling the motor.

Did you fill those new boxes with foam then?

Jeff -  Nice work! Floor looks great. I like how your port & starboard stern boxes turned out. Really opens up the back for storage and engine access. Now lets see a picture w/thu-hull sticking out the transom! ;D

Ross - The only way to make that triple exhaust pipe work on a CVX18 is to run the exhaust above the rub rail.  A lot of us CVX18 owners won't do that to our boats.

Looking good Jeff. How long before the motor goes in? I can't wait to see that exhaust. Now you got me thinking if I should pull those box out of mine. There was quite a bit of water that was coming in there, between the hull and deck,
when I got the boat. The top of the boxes are not in great shape so I am guessing there is water down in there. Was there alot of water in yours when you pulled them out?

Shaun, been trying to post more pics camera and comp are not working together

The motor and exhaust are in the S pipes worked out as planned made for the application.

Carpet is all in need to finnish up back area around the engine

The flotation box foam weighed approx 100lbs water soaked, they built the boxes installed them then drilled holes on top put in the expanding foam then carpet.  Did not bother to plug the holes after filling.  Now would the time to remove them.  While you are at it a 350 could easily replace your 305 at the same time.

Hope to get pics up soon

Jeff

Title: Re: CVX18 Floor rebuild

I used Epoxy

Have a hanging gas heater 45000btu keeps it nice and toasty

The reason I use epoxy is that my garage is attached and the minute I open a can of resin I hear screaming of smell from my wife and 2 daughters.

So you guessed it you know who wears the pants in the family.  But they let me do my GLASTRON thing without complaining.

I purchased the S pipes and exhaust tips on Ebay when parts could be purchased at a reasonable price.  I paid about $80.00 for the S pipes and $70.00 for the tips.

Jason

When you remove the Y pipe you put a block off plate in its place purchased that on ebay also.

what were thses s pipes originally off of?  that looks like it fit up nicely was thinking if i can find that setup id do the same. I had the old style manifolds and switched to center risers to gain room. Should e the same setup about as what you have but older style engine

Shrom - I'm pretty sure the S pipes he used are from a mercruiser kit (part number 18563A1)...it's a kit that comes with the two pipes and all the hardware needed to hook it them up to your center rise manifolds.

Jeff scored a hell of a deal as these typically sell for around $300 new!! I'm looking for the same kit after seeing how well they fit in Jeff's boat...good luck man!

Shrom - The set-up Jeff used should work on your boat. The only real difference between the 2 boats that I can think of is that power steering assembly on the transom(due to the different drives). But I don't think that will make a bit of difference.

thats right, the later model drive thru assy, the power steering slave is a little higher than the early model, leaving more space for exhaust below it,  here is a link for another "S" pipe on ebay.
