Title: Official 2012 Glastron Classic Meet - August 17th-19th Red Wing, MN
Post by: ChfBrianB on June 05, 2012, 11:52:41 AM
The 5th Annual MN Glastron Classic is nearly upon us!  Thank you for all of your participation in the past!  This years event looks to be another great meet!  I will again be managing your reservations and will be setting up your camping locations, RV sites, and Slip space for your boats.  The sooner I can get your information the better.  As in the past, I will designate your space allotment on a first come first served basis.

As in the past, the main event is on Saturday with many of our members coming for the day.  However, the meet has been growing and the Friday evening Sunset Run on the Mississippi is gaining huge popularity.  There is also a nice Sunday morning run as well in the schedule.  I encourage you to consider camping with us if you have not stayed overnight in the past.  The community that happens around the campfire and in the campground is really wonderful!

There are also a number of people that have been coming in on Thursday afternoon.  Please let me know if you would like to do that.

NOW ACCEPTING RESERVATIONS!

Here is what I ask of you...

1. Please RSVP to cgoamn@gmail.com with the following information (Please answer as many questions as possible). You can copy and paste the following questions with answers into your e-mail.

Please respond even if you are coming but will not be camping. I am managing a roster of everyone that plans to attend in any way.

A. When will you be arriving (Date and time estimated)?
B. Will you be camping with us or finding your own accommodations?
C. If you will you be camping, will you be in a RV or in a tent?
D. How many people in your group?
E. How many boats in your party? (Please include the boat model)
F. Will you be renting a slip?
G. If you are renting a slip, what is your boat length?
H. What is your e-mail address and phone #?
I. What is the name of the party representative for your group?
J. How many nights will you be staying?

The cost of the event is $32 per tent (or RV) per night. Slips are recommended and are $15 per day. There may be a small additional charge for groups of more than 2 per tent or RV.

The full weekend for two people with slip rental is $94 and is requested in advance so that I can properly manage our reservations. PAYPAL is prefered,  or check (made out to Brian Bergstrom).

Paypal may be sent to cgoamn@gmail.com

Checks should be made out to Brian Bergstrom and mailed to:

Hi again everyone!

Just a friendly reminder to fill out all the questions that I posted in the opening of the thread.  This is extremly helpful to me as I'm working with the attendance roster.  I'm managing all of the expenses, sites, and slips so the more information I have from you the better I can manage everything and make it less stressful for you.

I'm thrilled about the initial response, and keep the reservations coming!

Jeff ... a special request from my son ... he wants you to let him drive your CVX again while I race in the GT.  He thinks it will be close.  I didn't have the heart to tell him your CVX would drop me in the time it takes to hit plane.

Red Wing Lodging Update -- for those planning on a Red Wing hotel, the AmericInn is essentially booked for the weekend of our meet. Only a few rooms left at a rate substantially higher than their normal rate. I reserved a room at the Nichols Inn. Unless there have been improvements, I would not recommend the Red Wing Super 8.  Stayed there 3 years ago for the meet and it was the worse (noisy, dirty) Super 8 I ever stayed at.

Any chance the DNR up there will accept a pool noodle on a rope as a throwable?  I know it won't have a USCG approved label, but when you rip open the nylon cover of the labeled throwable there's a damn noodle in there.  Well, a flat one, anyway.  I like to think of it as the long bars that lifeguards would have - Might just bring mine anyway.

Ok ... so items on board.  Proper size USCG life vest per person, throwable, noise maker (horn & or whistle) ... what else.  I'm gonna have to go look it up.

Scott, sorry about the ticket.  If it makes you feel any better, I was pulled over driving my wife's car with expired registration and arrested and thrown in jail for a dog at large charge ... picture of me and my dog attached.

Who patrols the Mississippi River? Minnesota or Wisconsin? or both? Maybe it depends on which side of the river the violation occurs.

In the "No Wake" down from Red Wing the only thing there in on the MN. side ... so guess it would be MN. DNR or Water patrol, could be Coast Gaurd ?
Up in St.Paul I have seen all three.

You also need a type B-1 fire extinguisher in MN if you have an enclosed engine or fuel tank, I don't know if you ended up putting the fuel under the front or not.

Hopefully this isn't too far off topic, but since the law enforcement issues came up - just a quick question related to the possible interpretation of regulations by some various officials that might stop us to check. I'm planning for the event and even though I don't really think we'll need it, I was thinking about bringing along some extra fuel in some type of portable fuel tank just as a backup measure - whether a "Jerry" type can or a portable marine tank. I haven't ruled out a semi-portable marine tank either since I like to always have a backup. And I'm still considering size between simply 3 gallons, 6 gallons, or even 12 - 14.

My question is...on our CVX-20, since it's an outboard, there is not a blower system and it has a rather large "trunk" size storage area that also contains the batteries - but it is fairly enclosed once the back seat panel is in place. On my GT-150, that fuel space wasn't blocked by the rear seat like the CVX-20 is, so it wasn't a problem. I'm not personally worried about it, but since this rear area doesn't really have any external vents besides where control cables go through - I'm wondering if certain law enforcement types might interpret this as an enclosed area where I could possibly get a fine for having any type of un-vented fuel container in there?

Thanks in advance for your help!   :)

Sorry can't answer your question ...
BUT ...
We have a motto ... No one left behind !
With more then 50 G/C out on the water your chances of being stranded are less then ZERO !
We have a phone list of active members that could help if you have problems which I could email you .. If you would like one.
Also at the debreifing Brian has a list of phone numbers and info sheet he hands out.

Few years back Jeff drove all the way to lake Pepin at midnight on only gas fumes in his boat to rescue a member !
Jim has logged more miles towing boats then he has regular boating.
Then the best part is they'll fix whats broken and get ya back on the water !

If it is an outboard, you have no problem.
The venting required is to ensure that any vapors can escape from an I/O compartment ... running engine = heat + fuel vapors = kaboom.  If your motor is outside the boat, you should be in great shape.
If you're going to use a marine portable, there should be a vent on the main cap that you can seal, too, just to make sure you've got no vapors hanging out.

Thank you for your answers - I appreciate it!

I know you're a great group and we are the type of people who attempt to offer any help wherever we can as well.

It's just my silly need for backup systems - probably a consequence of being in the computer industry for ~32+ years. You'll laugh when you see us because I even have an engine mounted trolling motor - although that wasn't really put on as a backup system (just coincidence that it can be used for that as long as the battery holds out) but was rather because we sometimes like to sit out on the lakes we frequent and just float around and that little motor provides a little directional control without having to be anchored - especially handy when our favorite camping lake has their water ski shows and fireworks a couple of times a year.

Anyway, we haven't had this boat long enough (5th of July) to find out exactly how accurate the fuel gauge is yet, so I like to carry at least a small 2 or 3 gallons along extra just for piece of mind (even though in most places we could make it back on the trolling motor). I know that's sealed and shouldn't be a problem, but I can well imagine that the law enforcement is a little tougher on the "Mighty Miss" and probably just my own paranoia thinking that maybe one of them might say "batteries and fuel containers in a pretty well closed up compartment might be a recipe for a possible spark disaster". I know that's fairly far fetched - but I've actually been hassled for far less "imaginative" reasons in my younger days (good campfire stories).   ;)

Yes, I know - stop sweating the small stuff!   :)

Well, 'Green with Envy' is a water patrol officer by day, and Jim is a Power Squadron member so any questions could probably be definitively answered by either one.

I've put together a list of tips for first timers and pro's alike... Please take a minute to read thru this information and add to it if you there are other things that could be helpful!

I've contacted the Pierce County Sheriff's office and asked them if they would take some time on Friday evening and Saturday morning to meet with our group and answer questions and provide us with a safety briefing.  I'm hopeful that they will send some of their water patrol deputys over to share with us.  Granted, that won't help us as we prepare in advance, but I think that it would be a great thing for us to have some one-on-one time with the water safety division.

There are a few keys to remember...  There are certainly other things, but here are a few of the major ones that apply to most everyone... (These specifics might be slightly outdated, but remain good rules of thumb for all watercraft).

You Must Have Onboard...

1) A Lifejacket (PFD, Coastguard Approved) for each person onboard.  Please note that the regulations may state "accessable" or "within reach".  I have known some deputies to write warnings for PFD's still in the origional packaging or PDF's that are stowed in a place not easily within reach.

2) A Horn capable of producing a audible sound to be heard at a range of 1/4 mile.  This regulation generally applies to boats 17' and longer, but is perfectly applicable to all watercraft.  The audible device is not required to be attached to the boat.  Canned air horns, emergency whistles, and other auditory hand held devices are acceptable for boats small enough to not have a factory installed horn.

3) A Coast Guard approved throwable device. In most cases, this is limited to a cushion style PFD available in most sporting goods stores.  There is not a lot of other options.  Please note that just because it floats and you can throw it, that does not make it a "throwable PFD" in the eyes of the state.

4) Proper documentation of ownership. I recommend a copy of your registration, but the main thing is to ensure that your hull registration sticker is current and visible on the hull.

5) A fire extinguisher...  I know that the law lists a particular length under which you are not required to have one, but seriously...  Bring a fire extinguisher. (They are small, and can be mounted under the dash)

Now...  Some reccomendations that may not be law, but can be darn helpful!

Bring a flashlight or a spotlight for navigation and emergency signaling in the dark.

For daytime emergencies, consider making a signaling flag.  This can easily be done with some blaze orange fabric secured to a 3' dowel rod.  This can be used as a signal flag to wave at passing boats if you need assistance.

Consider a hand pump for bilge emergencies.  They can be purchased for less than $20 at most marine stores.  The basic varities are a long tube with a hand pump that can syphon water out of your boat in the case of emergency.

Jumper cables, booster boxes, spare batteries, etc. are not bad ideas!  :)

Consider a small portable tool kit.  Automotive stores often carry small zippered cases with basic sockets, screwdrivers, cutting blades, tape, etc.  Along with that, consider packing some zipties, ziploc baggies, spare rags, disposable rubber gloves, and anything else that you could possibly imagine could be useful to fix a 30 year old broken down motor.

Bring a spare quart of every type of fluid that your motor uses.

Bring an extra bilge drain plug

Have more than one anchor...  The river current is different from lakes.  Remember that if you find yourself in trouble, the current can take you a long distance in a relativly short time.  If you find yourself stranded or without power, consider deploying anchors to prevent yourself from getting in a worse situation.

Bring tow rope with quick connect ends.  There is nothing worse that needing a tow and not being able to find a easy to use tow rope.

If you have a belt on anything...  bring an extra!

Boating while intoxicated is a crime and does apply to your driving record in the state of MN.  The legal limit is .08% BAC.  It is legal to comsume alcohol while boating, but please be cautious and understand the laws.

Barges are BIG, and have the right-of-way.  Do not find yourself directly in front of one.  If you do, you will loose, and we will miss you!

Young children must be wearing a properly fitting PFD at all times when underway in a watercraft.

For specifics on this information please consult the 2012 MN Watercraft guidebook posted by Gregg.  Also, please understand that the Mississippi River is under the jurisdiction of multiple law enforcement and state agencies.  The best strategy is to be overly prepared for any situation and stay safe and within the law.

Thanks everyone!

Next Topic... What are some of the things that we need?

Firewood! (There is some available there, but I would prefer not to have to buy it.)

Beverages and coolers. We need a few coolers with water bottles and ice for the general public

Pot-Luck Food...  This is open for your input.  It's been great the past few years that people have just been bringing food items and throwing them out on the table.  I would love to do that again this year.  I will be doing a nice big grilled bbq chicken feed on Saturday evening, but would love for you all to bring the side dishes.  The main meals will be Friday Evening, and Saturday Evening.  I would suggest, that you bring something for yourself, and something to pass.

Lunch on Saturday will be picnic style on the beach.

We will NOT be going to Hok-Si-La beach this year.  We WILL be beaching at the sandy beach to the North of Hok-Si-La where we ended up last year. To my knowledge, there is not road access to that beach, to it will not be possible to meet up with the group in Lake City unless you plan for that on your own.

Tiki Torches, citronella candles, foggers, bug repellant stuff...  If you have it, bring it.  I'm tired of itching for weeks afterward!

Awnings, canopys, etc.

Kids Activities and Games

What else???

Activity and event suggestions...

So...  This is Your club!  Each year at the meet, we have tried to have special activities that were fun, got people connected, were exciting, and special for the club.  We have had special music, video showings, boat parades, some chef guy cooking some decent food, door prizes, award ceremonies, etc.

This year, I want to open it up to you...  What would YOU like at your meet?  I would love for you to take the ball and run with it.  If you have something in mind that the group might like, bring it / do it / oversee it / suggest it...  Whatever!

The meet is a great time to make memories!  What would you like yours to be?

Ok...my suggestion Brian is for us to get an online member directly - User name & Boat  (doesn't have to include real names and we can blur out registration...)

Doesn't help for the meet though!

I'm happy to bring up the projector again.

We recently acquired a gallon of "Orange LavaBurst Hi-C" syrup that we'll plan to bring along. It makes 5 or 6 gallons once the water is added if I remember right. We can use it all at once or split it up - however everybody/anybody wants. It's not everybody's "cup of tea", but at least is something the kids might enjoy as well. We have one of those "lemonade" dispensers that we can put an ice plate in - should work OK for this type of drink. If I remember correctly, they had ice available at the campground, didn't they?

We have three fairly long tubes of paper cups that we'll bring for the drink as well.

Thanks!   :)

Jim

Brian and myself also will be bringing some beer that we made for whoever would like to try some. Over 21 of course. I also have a box of give away stuff Koozies, key floats, chap stick, bandannas, water proof cell phone holder. The stuff says Farmers Insurance on it but its free. I was also going to bring a Few door prizes if you would like.

Hey Doran, I can't remember if you had a screen or not. I could bring that again this year. It's a nice tripod mounted one.

If you do store fuel in an enclosed area you do still need to vent it. My V172 has a bow mounted tank but then in the bilge area, you can store gas in there and close it off by flipping down the rear seat. The boat came from Glastron with vents (like an I/O) for this purpose.

Either way, you shouldn't need the extra gas. There are on the water stations in Redwing (starting point) and Lake city (end point) which are maybe 15 miles apart.

Should be a very nice trip. Water levels are lower which means low current and low debris. Unless we get hit with a HUGE storm before next weekend.

One more thing. I am pretty sure, in the 4 years we have done this even, not one person has been stopped by the water patrol, they are out there, but I think they can tell we are a responsible group.

I would hesitate to put a gas tank behind the rear seat of my CVX-16 that is not ventilated because of a spark from the battary. I would put a spare gas tank in the rear passenger area, even though that area is cramped to begin with.

I just bought a very small 3 gallon plastic marine type because it's a very flat model that could sit out on the main floor out of the way some place if it had to, even between the seats without looking too stupid, and the hose wraps around it to make it real compact and it's got a pretty good sealing mechanism.

After considering everyone's advice, I'm no longer worried about needing it for this event as much as just having it along on our regular outings - should be just enough to get back to the starting dock or at least off "the main drag" to a shoreline if we did happen to run out. (plus there's always the trolling motor and the ores that I keep in the ski locker)   ;)

Thanks everyone for your input!   :)

We have plenty of wood here, and the DNR didn't find any ash borrer in the tap by the pile so we are good there.

I checked on the beer production last night  We should have a Wheat and a Strawberry Wheat ready to go.  I'll keg it mid next week to make sure that it lasts the weekend.  The hard lemonade (Momma's Little Helper) will be touch and go at that time, it will be mature enough to drink but it tends to be a little syrup-y intil about 6 weeks out.

I also have a canapy that we can bring bean Bags, bocce ball 2 kids and an old yellow lab who doubles as a rug.

Oh yea, and I'll bring my award winning V-184 too ;D

If anyone is having doubts about making the trip or spending the night...  take a look at the weekend weather forecast!  Mid-70's and sunny with a touch of clouds!  Lows in the mid50's to 60's.  Can't get much better!

Hello from San Antonio TX.  I know i've not been on the forum much, but just wanted to drop a line and let you know I'll be there this year and really looking forward to seeing you all again.  In fact, I'll be picking up a new (to me) G-tron in that area and will be bringing it to the meet.  I've been keeping it kinda quiet... thought you might like the surprise when I get there.  Gregg... sshhhhhhh.  Some may already know about it, which is cool... I just don't have any good pics of it yet after the work that's been done.  Heck, I haven't even seen it yet in person.  Hopefully it will run correctly!  I will actually be getting there on Wed afternoon at the Island campground if all goes well and staying through Sunday morning, minus Thursday evening/Friday morning to visit with a friend north of there.  If anybody is there that early look for me... Red/Brown Z71 with a boat :)

Cheers and see you in a week or so.

Mark

I've already started my trek north.  Saturday drove to Branson MO.  I'm sitting at the camp sight as I type... finally got my coffee going and trying to remember/figure out this camping thing again.  I've got a list of things I need to get to make my life a lot simpler :), trying to figure out how to give my phone a charge, and I now remember how to put together this awning on my tent (I won't tell you how long it took to figure that out last night).  Very peaceful right now, perfect temps, lots of wildlife, and I'm looking at an empty hitch on my truck that won't be empty much longer :) and wondering how that Glastron/Carlson will look on there, I think it's a Carlson?.... hmmmm.   Getting ready to head over to Silver Dollar City for the day and take in some of the music.  Stay here for a couple days.  Will check back in soon.

Won't have an empty hitch for much longer  ;D

BTW... forecast is calling for severe thunderstorms for Wed evening, with 60% or better chance of rain that evening... not good tent conditions.  I may wait until Thursday to set up the tent, but the rest of the weekend, Thur - Sunday is looking really good!

You are still welcome to come up to my place if you like for Wednesday evening... :)

I really appreciate it... let me see what the boat has in store for me tomorrow and I'll let you know.  I'll call you.  Thanks!

It was great to see and have lunch with Doran today in Des Moines.  First time eating at a "MAID RITE", loose meat burger... it was good!

pics below, little something I saw on the travels today.  :)

Sure does remind me of a 77 cvx20 jet!
If only I could have swapped out my project orange CVX-20 for Brian's when it was for sale, that was one sweet ride.   :)   No, if I buy another CVX-20 jet, it will be a pristine '77, but orange metalflake, all original... probably my favorite boat of all the glastron/carlson's.  I haven't found that one yet... if it's even out there?

Hopefully nobody is as sick of this question as I am, but just so I get the straight scoop since a lot of you live over that way, how are the current water levels for this year's event?

Now, I know this has been answered in another section recently - plus I know that the level for the barges is much more than any of us could ever need - but you have to take into consideration that we live far enough away semi-isolated in the center of our state where almost everyday when my wife tells someone we are going to your event this year (and she has told A LOT of people so far (she works in the larger medical center in our part of the country) including a few Glastron owners that I think might check into this event and group a little more seriously for next year when they can plan for it a little better (they didn't know such an event or group existed)) more often than not they tell her they've heard there are LOW water levels on the Mississippi.

I keep telling (and reassuring) my wife that those reports are from further down in the southern states and that the levels are actually quite good from what I've heard around the Red Wing area for this time of year.

So just to set the record straight, are the levels as good or normal as I keep hearing they are over there? Thanks and looking forward to meeting a lot of you soon (that way you can associate a face with some of my foolish questions!!   LOL)!   :)

The levels look about normal or slightly low but that is a GOOD thing! Meaning slower current and less debris. As long as you stay between the RED and GREEN buoys you will be just fine. It's not hard either being that the channel is a couple hundred feet wide or more. You won't have any problems. Should be smooth "powering"!

I have to work til 5am Sat. And be back by 11pm Sun. Depending on how tired I am, I'm going to try and make an overnighter of it. It's only a 6 hour drive, I could be there by noon!

Since a few are mentioning what they are bringing along to pass, my wife wanted me to relay that besides the orange drink mix, she's made some chili soup and also some mixed fruit.   :)

Well Everyone...  We have come to the end of yet another great meet!  I'm excited to see that there is a Photo's and Video's archive building at www.photobucket.com/cgoamn_2012 (http://www.photobucket.com/cgoamn_2012). Please feel free to post your pictures and video's there!

The question has been raised about how many people and boats we had in attendance.  It's often hard to get a specific count, but I believe that we are close...  I counted 38 boats in the boat parade.  Then, there were a few boats that arrived later in the afternoon, and 1-2 that were still on trailers.  I believe that we had 45 boats in attendance this year.  I would also guess that we had between 130-140 people in attendance.  Lastly, we had at least 7 states that I counted, and there may have been 8!  What an awesome event!

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for each and every person that had their hands on this event.  No one person is greater than any other, and I thank all of you for your part.  I am constantly amazed by the generosity, support, interest, talents, and participation by this group.  It was GREAT to see some old friends, and even better to get to know so new ones.

I am thankful that we didn't have any major injuries, and that there were no major breakdowns.  To my knowledge, there were even a few boats that came to the meet not running, and left having been repaired!

NEXT YEAR-

The 6th Annual CGOAMN Glastron Classic will be August 15th-18th, 2013.  It will be located at Island Campground and Marina, Hagar City, WI. (Red Wing).

Again, a HUGE debt of gratitute to each and every one of you who participated in this event and made it something special.  I'm honored to serve you all!

Brian - I had a campground resident come up to me after the parade and I'd returned tell me he counted 47 boats, which was before Jerry Sellner arrived with his 4 boats.  So that would have put us at 51? And I don't believe that the CVX-20 Jet was in his numbers either...putting us at 52.

Dunno, but there was a lot!

I'm happy to bolster the number any way that we can...  Let's say 50+!  That's GREAT!

Not gonna lie seeing you & Brian's families made me miss having young kids!  (Not that mine are that much older...)

Now...about that CVZ Brian...I'll send you my contacts for the project hulls I know of.  Lots of warm weather left for you Shawn to work on the coolest boats on the water.  ;)  I hear you know a pretty good paint guy too.

I sure would like to think I could have my CVZ18 water ready for this event next year, just put it on the calendar on the iPhone. Google Maps says it is 1,155 miles from my door. What is the farthest away member you had this year?? I grew up camping and loved it but we aren't campers now, does the campground have rental campers that are available? We don't have any gear at all. We could stay at a hotel but being there at the camp looks like the place to be.

Here is where I am at, lots of work to do!

Looks GREAT!  We are thrilled to hear that you are coming up!  If you are not a camper, a hotel across the river might be the place to be.  Jim and Brian (and families) do that, along with some others.  I think that they would say that the experience is worth it...

The furthest distance traveled is usually Chris Kochman...  He comes up from Phoenix each year.  He hasn't missed a meat yet, but...  To my knowledge you would be the first from NC.  I lived in NC for 6 years, so it's going to be great to hear that accent again!  Maybe I can convince you to bring up some country ham for me...  I know that Charlotte isn't quite the mountains of western NC, but I bet you could find some good country ham anyway, right?

Looking  forward to meeting you!!!

No issues with getting some good country pig down here. If I can get up there, I'll be bringing Country Ham to the dinner for all to enjoy.

That being said, everyone keep an eye out for my posts over on the main site, I have alot of questions and need a bunch of help if I am going to make it 11.5 months from now! Hope all of you have a great day!
