Title: Official Glastron Classic 2009 informational thread
Post by: ChfBrianB on May 25, 2009, 08:41:49 PM
Greetings CGOA Members!
This is the first official planning message in regards to the 2nd Annual Minnesota Glastron Classic 2009.  The dates for the annual meeting are August 21st, 22nd, and 23rd at Island Campground on the Mississippi River at Red Wing, MN.

In response to the comments made about last years tremendously successful event, we have made planning efforts to enhance this years event to create an even more hospitable environment.

I personally went to our camping location today and have made all of the proper arrangements in advance of our event.  I am very excited to relay the following information in regards to our accomodations.
The campground can be found at http://www.islandcampingandmarina.com/index.html

1) We (currently) have 6 RV sites reserved with more available should we get the response from our members that they are needed.  These RV sites have water and power at each site.  The cost for these sites is $32 per site per night for up to 4 people. (We could put 2 tents on each site and split the $32 between two parties).  We have 6 sites reserved and they are #'s 22, 23, 24, 28, 29, and 4.  You can see the map to the RV grounds here.  http://www.islandcampingandmarina.com/Maps.html  Please note that we are directly across a gravel road from the enterance to the marina where we have many slips available.

2) There are many very nice facilities available to include a 40x40 public pavilion that is located 150 feet from our RV sites.  This location would be perfect for meals and shelter if there is rain.  it could be a public meeting place for the group.  There are also flush toilets and showers just across the road.  The campground host has informed us that there is plenty of parking and as many free visitor passes as needed for people that are joining our group for social time but might not be staying on site overnight.

3) The Campground has a very nice boat launch with a small courtesy dock, and the host is going to be waiving the launch fee for our group.  There is plenty of parking for boats and trailers under the highway 63 bridge (inside the campground.)  I strongly recommend that people that are coming for the day, launch at this campground and reserve a slip for the day (only $15 at the discounted rate for the boat.)  This way we could have a group gathering place with shelter if there is high wind or weather.  There are no convenient public docks or sandy shorline around the campground, so the rented slips would allow you to get out of the boat and provide access to the restrooms, showers, and public places.  Since we have no launching fee, I would like to be able to support the campground as well as ensuring that we recieve the best treatment in future years.

4)  The host has been generous enough to give us lower rates on slip rental.  One of the major comments about last years location was the lack of sandy shore to beach the boats.  This year, we have chosen a location with ample boat slips available for rental.  I ask that as many people as possible rent slips at the campground since we can only get the discount if we have 10 boats of more.  Go to the bottom of the page at this link http://www.islandcampingandmarina.com/Maps.html to see the marina map.  He has offered to reserve all available slips for our group.  He has agreed to rent out no transient slips to people outside our party.  Currently that includes (but is not limited to) slip #'s 34-44.  Please note that our camp sites are directly above the catwalk and only about 100 feet from the slips.  It could not be more convenient than to have your boat in the slips.  Normal cost for the slips is a flat rate of $7 plus a dollar a foot for your boat. (So, a 16 foot boat would cost $23 per day).  He has offered to give us a flat rate of $15 per boat per day regardless of size.  This is a good price, and although you are welcome to pull your boat out of the water at night, I would recommend that you leave your boats at the slips and then we can save space at the sites for rv's and tents.  Please note that the available slips are 30 feet long, so the host has said that we could put two 16' boats in one slip if we need the space.  The host has also agreed to have the power washer available so that we can clean our boats on site before leaving the grounds.  He is very accomodating, and is excited to have our club at his facility.

5) The Harbor Bar and restaurant is within a short walk of the campground.  The host has asked that noise be kept to a minimum after 10pm and quite hours are enforced after midnight.  Anyone who would like to have some drinks or stay out later than midnight are welcome to stay at the harbor bar until 3am, and are simply asked to walk to and from the bar and return quietly.

6) Pets are allowed in the campground but should be leashed and any waste needs to be removed by the owner.

Those of you that attended last years meet can attest to the fellowship and enjoyment of a great event!

Here is what I ask of you...

1. Please RSVP (By July 1st) to cgoamn@yahoo.com with the following information (Please answer all the questions).  You can copy and paste the following questions with answers into your e-mail.
Please respond even if you are coming but will not be camping!  I hope to create a roster of everyone that plans to attend in any way.

A. When will you be arriving (Date and time estimated)?
B. Will you be camping with us or finding your own accomodations?
C. If you will you be camping, will you be in a RV or in a tent?
D. How many people in your group?
E. How many boats in your party? (Please include the boat model)
F. Will you be renting a slip?
G. If you are renting a slip, what is your boat length?
H. What is your e-mail address and phone #
I. What is the name of the party representative for your group?
J. How many nights will you be staying?

This information is all very important to my planning and providing the campground host with the proper information.  If you intent to camp in the RV sites (where the main group will be. Tents included.) I ask that you send the $ amount of the camping to me by August 1st.  I will then coordinate all of the payments and send that to the host.  Payment can also be made at the time of arrival, but I cannot promise specific accomodations.  The rates are as follows... I can take paypal but prefer a check to Brian Bergstrom, 2312 7th Ave East, North St. Paul, MN 55109.  This is only to ensure that the cost of the reservations are covered in advance and we know how many people are going to be staying in the campground.

RV sites - 6 available (first come first serve, but more may be available if we need.  As is, we can hold 12 tents, or a combination of RV's and tents.)
    - $32 per night for up to four people - If we can get 12 parties of 2 people each, we could split the cost making the charge $16 per night per tent. (It will save is money to have more tents).
            - RV's will pay the full $32 due to the size, however, full hookups are available
Tent Sites
  - There are accomodations for people to come without rsvp but they may be required to stay at the tent sites slightly away from the group for $10 per person per night. There are no power or water hook ups at these sites (I recommend an early rsvp and staying with the group).

Boat Slips
    - I highly recommend renting a boat slip and storing your boat in the slip for the duration of the weekend. There are not any good beaches at the campground, so this is the best and most group friendly option.
    - $15 per day as long as we have 10 or more boats.

Total expense for a party of two people and one boat for two nights would be $32 per night (camping) plus $15 per day (slip fee) = $64 + $30 = $94

Please note that if we have more than 6 parties of two, the expense for the camping will be reduced.  The most ideal situation would be to have 12 or more parties of 2 which would reduce the camping expense by 1/2.

I will be creating a spread sheet of all registrants and your requests for camping and boat slips.  I can also calculate the amount owed for camping and slip rental and will e-mail each person with an amount due for what you request.

I strongly encourage you to respond soon as this looks to be be a tremendous event!  We will even be hosting a Saturday evening meal / party with awards and parting gifts!  Don't miss out!

Ok all, I'm still waiting for reservations and RSVP's from many people.  As you all know, this is an event that you don't want to miss, so let's get our reservations in early so that I can ensure that we have the space we need.  As of 5/27 I have 9 rsvp's and confirmations sent.  I will keep sending these reminders until you all respond...

Thanks!
Brian

Here are some pictures of the campground.  Included in the pictures are the Pavilion, Parking Areas, Bothrooms and Shower building, some of the shoreline outside the campground, the boat ramp, the RV camping areas, and the docks, Tenting Grounds, and the last two pictures are the area we have reserved.  It's a nice area, but it is more "commercial" than last year.  We are going to have a great time!

A question was posted to the CGOAMN@yahoo.com e-mail.  "What is the basic timeline for the meet?"

Here is my general answer...

We do not have the timeline set yet, but based upon Last years experiences, Friday is an open time for introductions, camp setup and boat prep.  Food will be on your own on Friday night.  Then on Saturday morning, I am going to put together a nice breakfast buffet from 8-9am...  Then we have coffee and view the boats from 9:30-10:30 or so as the people doing the day trips arrive...  We are then going to organize on the docks and I would like to be leaving at 10:30am heading south toward lake city.  there is a public beach at Hok-si-la park with bathrooms and great sand (This is the campground that we camped at last year, and should be roughly a 20 mile trip one way)...  That will most likely be the meeting place during the day.  Lunch would then be on your own there or in lake city.  Lake City has a nice marina as well as restaurants.  We will hang out on the beach for the afternoon, then we meet back at the Island campground pavillion for a dinner cooked by me from 6-7pm.  I'm planning on a fish fry again if that's ok with the group.  Evening cruise if you choose at your own pace, and campfire with the group in the later evening.

Again, this is the rough plan...

The only hard time will be the time we leave as a group for the club cruise.  Please try to be on time for that portion of the event.

Thanks all...  Remember, this is a rough timeline

Brian

Ok Everybody!  Now is the time to make the final push towards the 2009 Meet!  I think that I have done all that I can to make the pre-planning of this event a success.

As of right now, we have 62 registered attendees!!!

This is far more than we had last year!  And...  this does not include the people that are going to come and haven't e-mailed me...  I don't know why, but they are out there!  :)  Just as long as they come, that's all that matters.

I am including a excel sheet that I have been using to follow all of the reservations.  I have not been able to assign slips and sites to the bottom people on the sheet since I have been out of town and do not know for sure what other slips that we have.  Please understand that there IS going to be room for all of us.  We simply might have to be a little flexable as far as the location of our tents or our slips.  I will do my very best to assign each person a slip as you arrive, and with any luck, it will be yours for the duration of your stay.

I am honored to be a part of this group, and I am really looking forward to hosting this event and spending time with all of you.

Please note that we will be needing things like the communal items that we can all use.  Screened in tents, fire wood, tool kits (Steve :) ) Charcoal, lighter fluid, lawn games, pot luck style foods, sun screen, bug spray, bottled water, etc.  Please let us know if you plan on bringing things for the group so that we don't get too much of a good thing.  Andy (our friend who is flying in from California with his son) has already volunteered to bring the plates and disposables for the whole group.  (Thanks Andy!)

I will be including a more detailed e-mail of timeline, instructions, maps, and the like as we get a little closer!  Please look at the excel sheet and not me know if I have missed anything.  Remember, I'm trying to keep all the info straight, but I may have missed a few things, and it's not yet complete.

The most important thing is that I have your name, and your# attending correct.  Beyond that, we can work it all out when we register!

You all are awesome!

Brian

I'm guessing both, he and Jason were running hot up the Mississippi until both went 'THUD'

If you read thru the second half of 'Boating 8/9' you'll see he ended up with a hole in his boat  >:(

Bayflite do you have a picture of your hole(in your boat)? Is the access already done? If it is not to large of  a hole and access is pretty easy then I would fix it. I split the hull on my GT150 this winter and remove and replaced all wood tramsom, stringers, and floor using west system expoxy worked wonderfully. I know that people have their preference to resin or epoxy but I like the smell of epoxy(very little) over resin. If you have any questions please give me a call Jeff

Sean. Swapping your motor may not be a bad option with the deals that are out there on hulls. At least you know your motor is solid. I know your boat has been in the family a long time so the sentimental value is worth something too.

I like that, we'll call it an 'unknown prototype'...it doesn't look like it a regular old Bayliner on the inside anymore anyway.

Ok everyone!  It's time for the meet!  Most of the arrangements are in place, and we are well on our way to having the best meet ever this year!  As of right now, we have 71 registered guests and 31 classic boats that are coming.  I am very pleased with the turn out so far, but I think that we can do even better!

It's time to start thinking about schedules and things to bring...  Here are some thoughts...

1) I will be providing us with a meal on Saturday morning as well as a fish fry on Saturday Evening.  Saturday Evening is going to be our main fellowship time as a group, so it is very important that we get everyone together at that time.  It is also going to be the time that we have the videographer to do interviews with club members after the afternoon boating.  Please make plans to spend the evening with us even if you are making a day trip to the meet!

2) The schedule will be Saturday morning breakfast from (roughly) 8-9am.  The morning schedule this year will be a little different...  Last year, we had some troubles with getting the entire group organized and together.  So, we will spend the morning with fellowship and free time to gather around the marina at the campground.  We do not have much for sandy beach immediatly around the campground, so we will use the marina slips as our base camp.  I would like to have our group boating run in the early afternoon since we are going to have our videographer there around 2pm.  Lunch will be at your lesure, but I would love to get the entire group together from the marina for a large group run in the early afternoon.  Please plan to meet at the marina at 1pm!

3)  We will then meet back at the campground at 6pm for our fish fry and activities around the pavilion and the campfire.

4) Both Friday night and Sunday will be at your lesure.  Group boating on Sunday morning is a wonderful option!

5) As of this morning, the weather forecast for our weakend is PERFECT!  Mid 70's and mostly sunny through the whole weekend!

6) As always, I am available for questions if needed.  My cell phone # is 651-260-5266

I would like to ask that people consider bringing a dish to pass for the Saturday evening meal.  I will take care of the fish fry, and the boiled potato's.  Please feel free to bring salads, fresh fruit, beverages, desserts, or appetizers!

Also, please consider tools, safety equipment, extra life jackets, tow ropes, and anything that might be needed by the club members.

More to follow!

Hey Brian

I just got arouind to checking out the spread sheet and found a couple of errors. Not a big deal, I dont think, but it appears you have us down for both tent and rv camping. We'll just have a tent this time. I dont want the club to get charged for an rv spot unnecessarily. Second, my boat is listed as a 66 and its a 67. I know, minor detail.  :o
Thanks

Sorry,

Title: Meet Schedule
Post by: ChfBrianB on August 19, 2009, 06:31:10 PM
Greetings Everyone!
I am very excited that the meet is only days away.  I would simply like to lay out a time line and give basic information to those of you that are coming.  I have made up a spread sheet that has all of the information for those of you that replied to me with your reservation information.  I have assigned each person a RV or Tent location and slips based upon your requests.  I have also tried to accomodate each person as best as possible with the resources that we have been given at the campground.  Please note that the enterance to the campground is on the WI side of the Hwy 63 bridge.  The physical address is more in Hagar City than it is in Redwing.  If you are traveling over the Hwy 63 bridge from MN to WI, the entrance to the campground is the first road on the left after you leave the bridge.

Lisa and I will be located in a site immediatly accross from the office building at the campground.  Since I have recieved money from many (but not all of you) I would like to have you check in with Me (or Lisa) and we will check you off of our list and then make sure that you are squared away with our campground hosts.  The campground hosts and I will be in touch on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning so that they can focus on all of their other guests and I can take care of our group.

Our schedule is going to be generally loose and open to your intreptation of what you would like for the weekend.  The only thing that I ask is that everyone be at the marina by 1:30pm on Saturday so that we can all participate in a group river run.  We are going to have a videographer on board with us and he will be taking video footage of all the boats in action that are part of the river run.  If you are not with the group, you may not be in the video.

Here is the proposed schedule -

Friday -
12:00pm-7:00pm     Group arrival and Check in with Brian Bergstrom (Dinner on your own).
                             Social time and introductions
Please check with Lisa to sign the guest book and have a photo taken as you arrive!
7:00pm - 10:00pm    Evening activities and Campfire

Saturday -

8:00am-9:30am       Breakfast (Skillet style breakfast with Scrambled eggs, fresh vegetables, potato's and sausage).
9:30am-11:30am     Open social time.  This is free time to do anything that you like...  Get to know new friends!
11:30am-1:00pm    Lunch on your own

1:00pm                  Begin to gather at the marina for the afternoon river run
videographer arrives at Island campground and begins to get footage

1:30pm                   Depart from Island campground marina as a group
If the weather and wind is mild, we intend to travel 19 miles south to the Hok-Si-La public beach just north of Lake                                  City.  This is where many of us beached last year.  There is dock gas at local marina's, and sandy shoreline to                                    beach.

2:30pm-5:00pm        Social time and video footage at Hok-Si-La public beach.

5:00pm-6:00pm        Travel back north to Island Campground

6:00pm-7:30pm        2nd Annual CGOAMN Fish Fry!  Our videographer will also be shooting this time with us.

7:30pm - ???            Social time and campfire

Sunday -                 Free Time and Check out

Ok,  So the most important time (and the only hard time schedule) is the 1:30pm departure from the marine heading toward Lake Pepin.  Please do everything that you can to be on time for that departure!

I would also like to ask that people bring side dishes for the dinner meal...  Some salads and desserts to pass would be very nice.  Firewood would be great for people to bring as well!  Please bring beverages for your families to enjoy!

Blessings to all!  This is going to be great.

Looks perfect to me Brian! I think having some type of a schedule for the weekend will only help to make a great time even better.
Title: Greetings from Island Campground!
Post by: ChfBrianB on August 20, 2009, 09:04:19 PM
Hello everybody!  Lisa and I are "blogging" from the campground.  At the moment, it's raining on our tent.  The grounds are soggy, but the host has said that everything will dry out in the sun tomorrow pretty fast!

We have paid for all of the camping for everyone that is registered, so, as you all arrive, please check in with Lisa and I, and we will get you oriented to the grounds.  We are trying to be as light a burden to the campground host as possible.  As a side note, we have a few less sites than I expected, so we will be putting the tents close together.  This will be fine, and we will have a great time!

The marina looks great!  We have lots of spaces, and there is only one (outsider) boat that will be in our pictures.  I tried to cut his mooring ropes, but was told not to...  :)

I have my phone if anyone needs me...  651-260-5266

See you all soon!

Brian

Ok...  So, we have learned some things overnight...  One, our airmatress still has a leak.  Two, rain on a tent sounds like you are inside a popcorn maker.  Three, if you are a light sleeper, bring ear plugs!  The train tracks just accross the river are pretty annoying at times.

I think that the whole experience was made worse by the rain.  I only remember about 4 trains overnight, but there were a few barges too.  The rain kept us up for most of it though.

I feel like a famous person "blogging" about their lives in Hollwwood or somthing.  This is fun!  Bring Earplugs!

Should be there by 9:00 am sat. with scott GT150. We don't know if we will come by
boat or by trailer. I want to come by trailer, but not sure if there will be enough parking. Sounds like we may stop down by car friday evening and look around, check out the slips and say hi. TV should be there by then too. Should be a great time.

There is a nice ramp across the river in Red Wing if for what ever reason we run out of parking at the campground. I don't really see that as a problem as we can always park on the road too.

Well I'm back at work already here, VERY envious of those who were going on the river again today, should be beautiful. On behalf of myself, Mike, Liz, and Perrin, a big thanks to Brian, Lisa, and everyone else who made that such a fun outing. Shoulda used some sunblock on my nose though, I  closely resemble Bozo the clown today and it's painful. It was great getting to meet everyone and WOW were there some nice boats, can't wait for next year! Thanks again!

A big thank you to Brian, Lisa, and others who labored over the many details to make the Minnesota Classic Glastron annual event enjoyable and successful. The facility was conducive to showing off the boats, talking, launching onto the river, resting, taking pictures and just about anything else.

I will remember this weekend and relive it through the many pictures taken.

Yes, I am going to be sending a copy of the video and a thank you letter on behalf of the CGOAMN to our campground hosts.

They were exceptional and even sent pictures and an article to the Red Wing newspaper (the Republican eagle, I think).  Could everyone keep their eyes open for the article to be published in their paper.  I would love to see what they write about us.  I've been told by the campground hosts that the Red Wing paper is available online!  Thanks for keeping your eyes open!

Also, many of you know that we had a private pilot flying over our group taking pictures of the club run... Hopefully, those photo's will be available soon.

Thanks all!

B~

We too would like to thank Brian and Lisa for all the effort it took to put this together. Pam and I had a great time and never get that kind of time in the water, not to mention with other people with a similar interest. Its also a great way to learn about the other models, parts, modifications etc.
I'd also like to make a suggestion but I am not sure how one would go about this.. I am finding it difficult to tie "screen names" to real name/faces of people I met this weekend. Maybe as part of the "member profile" a screen name, real name (unless you're shy) and even a pic of your boat.? I dont know how much work that would be. It seems many of you know each other well, so maybe its not an issue except for newbies and people with bad memories such as myself.  ???
I have over 90 pictures we took at the event and wanted to post one of us at the beach but when I do "insert image" it just sticks the letter img into my post. Also under additional options, I tried to insert a link and that didnt work either. Said it was too big. I must be doing something wrong! I'd like to share them all and we'll figure out how to do that. I will at least get them on a dvd. Some shots are not so good because of all the waves, but some are great!
Scott, it is cool to see young guys such as you and your brother Mike interested in old Glastrons. The group is very diverse!
Can't wait to see the dvd!

Maybe I'll try photobucket but I live in no mans land (apprently) and only have dial up. I grow old waiting for photos to download and some large emails.

With dial-up it will take some time !
If you resize them that would cut down on some up load time.
Did your camera come with photo editing software ?
If not try Picasa.

We took a leap - into the unknown and hoped for the best. . . .

WOW!!!!
Steve and I had a BLAST!!!
We could not get enough. We could not get enough of the AWESOME selection of Glastrons. We could not get enough of the people.
In fact, we stayed until the bitter end, along with the doughnuts from this morning and left over pasta from last night's awesome fish fry.

Thank you EVERYONE for your hospitality!!!! We feel very fortunate to to have been apart of this AWESOME event!

We couldn't have imagined a better weekend!!

Hope we don't have to wait until next year to get together again!

Steve and Garnet

I tried to post a pic again as an attachment and it puked so I compressed it and it appeared to have puked again so I hit post and it said "already posted" so I dont what the deal is cuz that message and the pic of Jason's boat are not here! One of the best pics we have I might add. Have some pics of 1/2 boats  ;)
Gregg, doesnt compressing them degrade the quality? I assumed it would.
Jason, thanks for the compliment. The boat needs some work but will never be as pristine as yours. Maybe if and when I finish the motorhome I am redoing and get that V175 ready for next year, I'll get back to the 163
Oh well, time for bed. 4:45 rolls around a bit too soon for my liking :-[
