Title: CVX 18 Seat Build_ cont.
Post by: Glastronjohn18 on March 23, 2015, 11:26:40 PM
After my delivery on Friday I get to leave work early as my boss tells me "there is nothing to load for Monday, so you can go home and work on your boat". With a 3 day weekend and orders from The Boss to do boat work  I'll take a line from Doug....Whoo Hooo!!!!

I get some extra help as my boatn' butty Ethan stops by. You remember Ethan.

First on the agenda is to finish assembly of the front seats. When I built the seats last year I couldn't get the backs to bend around the slight curve of the base . See the seat build here...

Here they are as I left them.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_2277_zps8wucrjye.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_2277_zps8wucrjye.jpg.html)

We'll use some steam to get the backs to bend. Here Ethan puts the finishing touches on the steam box.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_10270_zpsyonoucke.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_10270_zpsyonoucke.jpg.html)

Steam box completed.  Enough work for tonight.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_10271_zpslp3aymph.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_10271_zpslp3aymph.jpg.html)

SATURDAY  MORNING

First chore is to preheat the box to  212 degrees than I loaded one back at a time into the box and steamed it for about 15 minutes. Because of the size it was slow getting the box up to temp. I tacked on some scrap insulation panel which sped up the heating process.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_10272_zpsejviu3pg.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_10272_zpsejviu3pg.jpg.html)

Once the piece is heated you need to work fast and attach it to the base before it cools. Here are the finished seats ready to be covered.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_10273_zpsetwpcr3w.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_10273_zpsetwpcr3w.jpg.html)

That finishes the front seats so it's time to start on the rear bench.
My plan is to use the bench from the silver parts boat and save the bench from the gold boat to reference when it's time to put it all back together. There is only one problem with that plan. The bench is so rotten by the time we got the seat into the basement it already started to disassemble itself. Sigh.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_10274_zpsytr9d2qk.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_10274_zpsytr9d2qk.jpg.html)

So it's back to square one. The seat from the gold boat will be used to make the patterns. I'll have to rely on pictures to use as reference.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_10282_zpsep7xzh6h.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_10282_zpsep7xzh6h.jpg.html)

OK, I don't see the piece that holds the seat bottom up. You can see the remains of staples where it was attached. Wasn't on the silver boat either.
Anyone have pictures or dimensions of the missing piece?

Here we are in the middle of teardown.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_10293_zpsxtkr1l1w.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_10293_zpsxtkr1l1w.jpg.html)

Everything is apart and ready to cut new pieces.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_10301_zpsv3lkeiot.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_10301_zpsv3lkeiot.jpg.html)

All new wood cut and ready for final assembly.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_10302_zps4vgded49.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_10302_zps4vgded49.jpg.html)

That's it for now. Stay tuned for the next installment when we put all the pieces back together.

Today's project was to put the rear bench together. Sorry there are not more pictures but we got so wrapped up in assembly that I left the camera on the bench. Here the side and front are tacked in place.

Ethan finishes stapling the sides in place. The air stapler has proven to be worth its weight in gold. It sure makes assembly faster.

Here's what it looks like with the sides, back and front secured together.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_0307_zpsmztcll9o.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_0307_zpsmztcll9o.jpg.html)

Earlier I asked how the seat bottom was held up at the rear because the wood was missing from both of the rear benches that I have.
I just looked at the line of staples that was left and took a wild guess what was there. Now here it is with a new mystery piece.

Ethan finishes building the seat bottom.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_0308_zpsbbcjfzqp.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_0308_zpsbbcjfzqp.jpg.html)

Here is the completed bench.

(http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a494/glastronjohn18/CVX18/IMG_0311_zpsub7vqo5d.jpg) (http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/glastronjohn18/media/CVX18/IMG_0311_zpsub7vqo5d.jpg.html)

Now comes the ultimate test of quality control. Will the new bench actually hold up to the weight of a person?

Ethan says........YES !!

All this work has tired me out.

The old and the new.

Nice work!!

My boat is a 1979 CVX 18. It also has staple marks but no rear support for the bench. How did you attach the back support to the plywood?

Also, do you have the dimensions foe that back piece?

I just ended up using a 2x4, seems to be working great!

I noticed the corners rotted out so I left about 1/4 inch space in both corners so that water could run off if needed.

Taking the bench out was awesome, I should have taken more pics  :D

Just kinda reviewing this thread since I'm considering making some new seats for both the CVZ and Timi.  Curious John, what did you use as a source of steam?

For the rear seat support I used  1x4 cut to 3" width. Angled the rear of the board so that it fits square with  the rest of the seat, as the back is angled rearward.  I seem to remember cutting the board at a 17 degrees  angle.

Mike, sorry it took so long to answer.  I have a steam generator most commonly used for wallpaper removal. I got it from a woodworking supply house as it came without the steam plates used to remove wallpaper. The brand I have is Earlex but it seems to be identical to the Wagner unit. As far as steaming the seats Ethan and I built a steam box big enough to fit the pieces.

This is the unit I have.

That's what I was wondering.  Thinking about an oven structure I can use to powder coat, steam, and use to bend Plexi.   Am thinking sheet metal with insulation.

I did not need to steam the back of my seats to make the curve.
Instead I attached the back first, then the sides separately, and added the corner pieces last.
Doing it this way, the plywood bent to the curve using clamps, and was then screwed and glued.

Always nice to find an easier way. At the time I didn't have the right clamps so I steamed 'em.
