Title: delamination!
Post by: 75starflight on June 11, 2018, 09:46:16 PM
While I was finally getting ready to start Phoenix for the first time this year I came across a soft spot on the starboard side right behind the driver's seat. I decided to do a test drill in a couple of spots and found wet wood but in good condition. I got the trusty Sonic Crafter out and cut a 4" x 4" test hole and found my floor in this area damp and delaminated. So out come the two seats. I cut away part of the carpet and started cutting test holes until I found good wood. So now that good wood is found I can hopefully get the floor patched for this season and do a full floor job again on Phoenix in the fall. This time I will be using marine grade plywood for the floor.

Think I'd skip the wood and go with synthetic floor stuff others have used.

Yep, I am leaning that way. I can now prove that the new style floatation foam will not hold water.

Appears to have been well sealed on top, do you think the water was trapped below?  Sorry to hear you found rot, kinda heartbreaking.

I am guessing it came from below. Three years ago I had a leak in the hull in that same area. But, I did have the under side of the floor sealed. it may also have been caused by the hardware I have securing the seats. There seems to be intrusion around those points also.

Is the void between the floor and the hull filled with foam?

In that area of the hull no, the floor is around a 1/2" away from the hull in this location. I have the areas I can fill done as high as I can.

Does water have a way out if it does/did get in there?

Yes, there is a drain where the stringer meets the transom. And there is no water standing in the area I removed last night.

I am starting to believe that water would stand in the carpet and then soak into the wood through my mounting hardware.
