Title: Wanted 18' 19' 20' Ohio area
Post by: Calvinator on August 07, 2018, 04:40:54 PM
Still looking for water ready 18' 19' 20' Carlson (1970s, 1980s)  in Ohio or few hrs out of Ohio.  I know this a MN-area forum, but MN is 12-14 hr drive one-way too far.

Looking for leads, have cash.
Thanks - Frank

Just an excuse to come to the annual meeting at Treasure Island.  There are several turn key boats available for sale from members.  No better place to make a deal on a boat.  Fly in, rent a truck to pull home your new addition.  Maybe I'm not the one to ask, I drove from Omaha to nearly NYC for my last boat(Timi).

A 24 hour drive for the perfect boat is nothing. I also recommend coming out to red wing. Take one for a test drive!

Hello - I'm still out here shopping.

I have looked at 2 CVX18 in the $7000 range.  Prices didn't support condition  :(  First boat was original motor and wood structures, but cosmetically updated.  Transom flexing.  3.5 hr drive to see second boat. Craiglist ad only had the good pictures, in person view was terrible. Merc motor would not start.  Owner was one of the "as far as I know" types.  Merc motor had 60PSI compression on cyl 1.  Trailer crossbeam was rusted and unsafe.

There is a updated CVX23 with jet 4 hrs away.  Called, emailed, txted, no reply.  I think it is a fake ad used for info harvesting.

No luck yet.  Still shopping  ! ! !

Tim's CVX18 might not be perfect, but at least you know what your getting.

Yes, sure looks nice.

I would want a windshield and side grab bars to complete the look.  Love Olds motor!  Berkeley jet pump I'm sure is fine, but I would want trim control.  Might as well add a rooster booster too.  Lol.

I have seen some of the Carlsons with original 1970s interiors, how cool, but cushions wore out.

For me, the financials don't add up.  $7900 boat + $4000 personalized add ons = $12k boat.  And who knows what is lurking under the floor of a 1976 boat!!  :o

So, I'll keep shopping for a few more weeks and then go into hibernation during fall/winter.

Fall is definitely the time to swing a good deal on a boat before winter arrives.  $12K for a very good condition CVX-20 jet is really not outrageous, they are highly desired Carlson models.  Have you posted any wanted ads or checked with locals Marina's or boat supply houses?  I've seen some decent craft for sale at Bass Pro.  If it doesn't happen this fall, it does give you time to bolster your boat fund.

Drove 3 hrs to look at 1986 CVX18.  Had nice updated interior.  350 Engine runs, no idea how many hours, trim piston was leaking, and skeg was ground away.

Floor was soft in front of and under rear bench seat.  Other floor areas were solid.  The owner would not let me poke at stringers, engine mount, or transom -- just visual inspection.

Owner wanted $6500 firm for his $3000 boat, so deal breaker.

Owner was claiming the floor just needed a patch. My experience is a soft floor is going to have rotten stringers.  Boats rot from the bottom up.

Maybe I am wrong and there is something unique about Glastrons can have a soft floor, but stringers are fine.  Anyone have experience just patching a floor, but stringers were good ?

THANKS -

Have seen a couple here where the floor was soft and the stringers were good.
That doesn’t happen very often, and I would never bet money on it.

Shawn had a CVX18 with soft floor but stringers were OK.
Ya never know until you start rippin' stuff apart.
Some stringers are wrapped better then others, mine have so much resin on it, that it's dripping off edges.

Try this one. 1981 SSV 176  It's a bow rider so there's plenty of room for the family plus it has flake that you like.

A soft floor under the rear seat is pretty common on a CVX18. The floor on my '85 was soft under the rear seat, just like my '79.  Unlike my '79 there was no glass layed on top of the floor so it is amazing it lasted as long as it did & that whole floor isn't a rotten mess. But this boat was owned by the same guy for almost 20 years and it sat in a garage which is what saved it. All 3 stringers are solid where I removed the floor but they may be rotten aft alongside the flotation boxes. I suspect they are fine forward to the bow.

Generally a rotten floor means rotten stringers but not always.

I payed $3500 for this boat last fall.

Been thinking about this boat.

https://flint.craigslist.org/boa/d/glastronci/6710324227.html

I have not seen the boat, but thinking if it was in reasonable shape and not rotten, I could spend a few more thousand to make a nice boat.

Help me... the Ford 302 marine engine has part availability problems, right ?  Which parts are the trouble ?  THANKS -

Cool boat !
The gold flake might still be good under the paint ...
Put a GM 350 in it with a Mercruiser …
Or even an Arnsen drive .. I know where you could find one for a good price !

I don't know. It's a fairly rare model. Made from 71-73. It appears to be pretty heavily molested. I don't think the seats are original either. Pleating does not look right. Flake might be ok under paint but wouldn't count on it. Probably rotten wood as they all do. The Ford part of the 302 would not be hard to find parts for the but the Volvo side of it yes. Boat may be ok but I feel it's about 1500 overpriced. I'd keep looking.....

Busy weekend !

Looked at a CVX20 jet today.  Unable to get it running.  I helped the guy troubleshoot too.  Trailer junk.  Floor was so soft I thought my foot was going to go through.  Hr. meter said 4400 hours WOW.  Windshield broken.  Wiring looked suspect.  I was so excited to find a CVX20 but then let down with the condition.  Needed a whole rebuild, ugh......  Of course, the owner was firm at $6k.  His view was after I do all the improvements, boat worth $15k.

Looked at a 1977 Tahiti with 455 Olds and Berkeley jet $3k.   Guy just replaced the motor with a junkyard motor.  Previous motor spun bearing.  This style hull was so easy to inspect, the transom and stringers were solid.  I was getting excited.  Upholstery poor, paint poor, trailer fair, but the engine was clean and looked installed properly.  The jet was clean and also had diverter.  Fired this baby up and big block thru hull exhaust sounded awesome.  Left it running for 20 mins....  Tradeoffs were going through my mind about the condition of the boat..... then, oil milkshake coming out of dipstick tube.  Delusions of easy fixes were racing through my mind.  Then rationale hit..... I don't have a shop to fix this motor....  I just want to buy a cool boat and go boating.  LOL......  well, search continues!

I know you don’t want to come to minn. but if anyone else is interested,I’ve been watching this cvx-20 for a couple years.. talked to the owner this fall and he said he’d let it go for $2400. It’s all there. Needs the floor and possibly stringers. Has a Ford 460 that’s good and all the parts with motor cover.. now that I have to rebuild old blue I’m not going to have time for it.  Originally a blue 77 I believe
