Title: Garage explosion
Post by: nes-cv23 on December 12, 2018, 06:59:45 PM
If anyone was watching the news last night you probably saw the story of a garage explosion. I’m sorry to say it was one of our fellow glastron members.   Jeeptron.   His son was the one in the garage when it exploded, he is in critical condition with many injuries. But is expected to recover. But it will take a long time. I just want to make sure all you guys out there with portable heaters,   Make sure they are all safe. Right know it looks like it was the cause of the explosion. Please take a moment and say a prayer for Mason and hope he recovers well. I’ll post more when I here better news and details.

Mason is doing better!!   Might get out of icu tomorrow. Still has a long way to go. Is injuries include loss of one leg below the knee, and both femurs busted. Loss of a couple fingers and an piece of shrapnel in one eye.   He is in good spirits and even said, when he goes boating next year he’ll wear an eye patch and a peg leg and go as a pirate..  ;)    And also says thank you to everyone for your support.

I'm very glad to hear he's going to pull through.  Is there an idea of a cause?

I’ve not heard anything official yet, but Mason said he went out to start the heater and it exploded.  The explosion blew out the outside walls and pushed the house off the foundation.  So it looks like it’s a total loss..

Wow - so sorry to hear about Mason but glad to hear he's gonna make it. I guess if he's making jokes about it already that's good..... but I'm sure at this point it hasn't really sunk in what just happened to him.

Curious if it was one of those kerosene fired torpedo heaters? I use one all the time to heat my garage, just used it yesterday in fact.

Likely cause is a propane leak.  Propane is heavier than air, so given a slow leak, it collected in the low areas.  Quite likely he never smelled the gas.  A terrible tradgedy that could happen to any of us that use gas, methane or propane.  Kerosene would cause a fire, but generally won't atomize to create an explosion.  Similiar to diesel.  Glad to hear he has a sense of humor about the accident.
