In the good old days in the 1970's, my wife and I would pack the boat to the gills with camping gear, food and supplies and launch at Stillwater and travel down the St. Croix and Mississippi, through the locks at Red Wing, go through Lake Pepin, travel up the Chippewa River (where the Mississipi narrows back to a river)for about a 1/2 mile, and camp for 3 or 4 days. I had a 80 HP Mercury on the Glastron V-153 at the time and we could cover the 70 miles in about 3 hours on the three 6 gallon tanks and not run out . Remember being stuck at the Red Wing locks at 7:30 PM due to barges, and had to be in Stillwater by dark. We would buy gas at a land gas station in Wabasha. Coming back from the Chippewa River when the wind was high one time, we idled the entire distance through Lake Pepin due to the high waves, with the waves crashing over the bow and windshield. Then there was the lightning - no stricks, but scary.

The Red Wing Republic Eagle has a short blurb on our event, with a longer article tomorrow according to Ruth, reporter for the newspaper as follows:

Glastron gathering

The Classic Glastron Owners of Minnesota and Western Wisconsin are holding their third annual gathering at Island Campground. More than 40 Glastron boats from around the country are expected.

Glastron gathering

Classic Glastron Owners will parade their boats slowly past Red Wing?s waterfront en route from Trenton Island to Hok-Si-La Campground in Lake City.

When: 11 a.m.

Where: Mississippi River

When: All day

Where: Trenton Island

I like cruising at 42 too but too bad my boat only goes 41 with my current prop! Like Jim said, WOT for some.....
Doesnt matter. We have all day and you can go as fast as you want and backtrack. No big deal.
As far as the moonlight cruise...last year we made a point of being back before it was so dark you needed a light, but most of us do have a hand held spot at least, though I never used mine.

How is the weather looking for the meet ?
We are all gassed up, packed up and ready to hook-up in the morning, make a short trip to the grocery store and hit the road.  I don't know how far we will get tomorrow, I'm gonna take it easy on my truck, save a little gas maybe, we plan on getting into Red Wing Thursday afternoon.

Thursday looks good...

Friday has a 60% chance of Scattered Thunderstorms

Saturday and Sunday...  0 % chance of rain...  85 degrees and sunny!  Only a 4 mph wind on Saturday.  If we can get through some showers on Fruday the rest of the weekend is going to be PERFECT!

Drive Safely Red...  We will see you on Thursday.  Call me if you have any issues!

The moon will be 3/4 full in the southern sky by the weekend, which will give us a 'heavenly' spotlight.  The moon was bright enough last night on patrol that we kept looking back thinking someone was shining us with a spotlight, and it was only 1/2 moon then!  No worries on lighting.

Reminder to all boats:

Don't forget to have your boat registration card on board.  The water patrol requires it and WILL issue a warning and maybe a ticket if you can't present it.

Also, it is not valid unless it is signed by the registered owner.

I hate to wish away time, but I can't wait for the weekend!!

Fun to be had by all rain or shine. I would like to get set up in dry weather though. We'll make it all work. That is great to hear that the forcast for the weekend has improved and we have members showing up in Minnesota. Gettin close! I know, personally, I will be in scramble mode tomorrow after work, despite dedicating most of last weekend and every night this week to prepping. Unfortunately, the box of my truck is not water tight and will be sitting at work in the morning on Friday. Just need to put the valuables/rustables in the cab.
Cant wait!

I take it they got I-35 open again then?  That's good news!  First part of the week they showed a reporter standing on the Iowa State campus, flooded.

Hope everybody has a safe trip, and a great weekend.  Try to keep us posted, those of us who couldn't make the trip are with you in spirit........(hoping for updates and pics.)   ;D

Yeah, the basketball area was flooded and the floor floated literally 5 feet off the floor.  The interstate opened middle of last week.

Our publicity in the Red Wing Republican-Eagle Newspaper:

http://www.republican-eagle.com/event/article/id/68431/publisher_ID/16/

The Classic Glastron Owners of Minnesota and Western Wisconsin will meet Aug. 20-22 at Island Campground just across the river from Red Wing. Spokesman David Pankonin of Lino Lakes, Minn., expect close to 100 registrations and more than 40 Glastron boats from as far away as California, Oklahoma and Arizona.

The regional organization supplements the national classic Glastron group and focuses on boating trips and social events around the Twin Cities.

The common thread is a love for classic Glastron boats, ranging from the late 1950s through the late 1980s, although others brands of boats are not excluded, Pankonin said.

?Many of boats are purchased as basket cases and loving restored to original condition,? he said.

At around 11 a.m. Saturday the group will parade the boats slowly past the Red Wing waterfront then travel to the public beach at Hok-Si-La campground in Lake City.

For images of last year?s event, go online to www.cgoamn. com/2.html.

The group?s website is www. cgoamn.com/5.html.
