Upholstery question...Doug?
« on: August 09, 2010, 06:19:55 PM »
I decided to finally fix the rear seat back on my 167. A tree fell on the boat back in the mid 90's, when the only place I had to park it was on a busy street in front of my house. #1 reason I moved out of the city. Originally I was just going to straighten out the trim peice that edges the seat back but after looking at it closer, decided the plywood should be replaced too. This weekend I cut a new peice of wood and carefully removed about 800 staples and discovered they had attached foam to one side. May have been 1/8" think at one time. Now about .080 thick.
I guess to make it more comfortable to put your spine against but since I removed the legs from the lower portion of the seat, it is used just to hide my battery and gas cans.
So Doug or anyone else...do you think there is anything "special" about this foam or can I just go to a craft store and get some? Maybe I need to go to an uphostery supply shop? Also what are the chances of getting new vinyl in 1967 Jade green? I am trying to salvage the original stuff but it has a small tear in it, but I will use it as opposed to having a green that doesnt match the rest.
Thanks
Ross

Hey Ross you can get foam at fabric stores a la "JoAnns" but you might not be happy with it. You're gonna want something a little firmer/denser. For that you'll have to see an upholsterer.

If you'd like to send me a sample of your vinyl I'll see what I can do. PM me if you're interested & I'll give you my address.

Edit. The vinyl may have been foam backed to begin with & not added during assembly. Foam backed material is quite common still today.

Doug
The foam is stuck to the wood and I have the vinyl removed so its free and clear. I thought about sending you a chunk BUT there is none to spare. If I cut a piece out. I'll be commited to having to replace it.
Being that this is the back of the seat and what is there is so thin AND there are no legs on the bottom to hold that up anymore...no one can sit there so I guess I am  not that concerned with density. I'll see what they have at a crap shop. If I wreck this vinyl (more)when reinstalling, well then I'll have to send you a peice.
Thanks
Ross

Before ya staple it back on wouldya be able to scan a sample? Or send me a high res pic? I have several different shades of green vinyl at the shop. Some old some new, but all in unused condition.

If I can match it to something close I'll mail you a sample. How's that sound? You pay postage ...   Heh heh heh

www.thefoamfactory.com  Got new foam for the back bench seat in my CVX 16 this past spring.  Bought the foam for outdoor use. Dries fast if it gets wet.  Delivered to my house in one week.  Cost was much less than buying it from a local upholstery shop.

Doug
Hmmm I can try. Cant say I've scanned anything beside pieces of paper and photos before but I'll give it a shot. I can send a higher res shot of the above pics too. Not sure if that would be good enough. Gotta get it put back before next weekend! Why did I start this now?
Certainly I'll pay postage. I know things are tight.

Thanks BadgerC (Brian?) I'll check the link.

Well this aint happening before next weekend. Picked up some foam but 1/2' is the thinest I could find and the vinyl is just too small and ragged on the edges and is not stapling on nice. I am going to have to replace the vinyl by the way it looks and maybe have a pro do it. Argh! Looks like Ill be ble to send you a sample after all Doug.
