What a surprize ...
« on: January 25, 2011, 10:15:51 PM »
When I took Barb's lower unit to the shop today, I hooked up to my Scimitar and pulled it to the public scales.  Based on the brochure weight, approx 1850, I assumed it weighed in about 2100 / 2200 sitting at the dock with a little gas in it ... Wrong !  the boat weighed 3340 sitting on the trailer with-out the motor.
There is about 25 gallons gas in the tanks, all the interior, life jackets, oar, fire ext, anchor, ropes, battery, the drive thru assy, and I weighed the drive also 94 pounds with the prop and lube, The trailer weighs 960 pounds, so just the boat, drive and all the gear, the gas, weighs 2474 with-out the motor.  I'll weigh it again when I put the new motor in it, and we plan to weigh Barb's boat when we get done with it also.  I find the weight of boat stuff interesting.

That big glass windshield has to weigh a lot...what else?  You don't have a sun pad...just carpet back there from what I remember.

Seems most boats are substantially more heavy than the published dry weights would leave you to believe. Best/only way to know what you got back there is to weigh it.

I just added up the weight of the gas, and there may be more on board than I think, the transom assy, and the other stuff on board, battery etc. to see if the weight comes down to the brochure Approx weight,  not quite, it's weight is still 2086  pounds,  I quess that ain't that far off, thats 88 pounds a foot.

Two conclusions:

1) All that extra reinforcement and heavy duty re-construction actually adds weight.  Classic case of paying a weight penalty for stronger construction.

2) Justification for a bigger motor.  But you are there already!   ;D

Which is why I recommend composite material(s). They are as strong or stronger than any wood you can buy.

Yeah it's a lil higher priced initially but when you factor in the weight savings. Which equates to less fuel burned, better performance, etc. Plus the fact that it's impervious to water. I believe it's a good investment. Not to mention you can work the stuff with a razor knife.

Hear ya. From my experience manufacturer dry weights are notoriously 'optomistic'.

I am curious what the performance was like? How did it compare with others? Did you check it before and after reconstruction?

even though I did re-inforce the hull when I put in the new floor and stringers, I prbably only added 10 or 12 pounds of mat, and no more than 18 pounds resin, about 20 to 25 pounds foam, but then I re-built the back seat with 1/4 inch plywood, and 1 3/4 X 1 3/4  framework weighing 34 pounds with-out the cusions, but when the cusions and the sound insulation were added it weighed 77 pounds, al least 30 pounds lighter than original.

I been searching the weights of these boats, quite a difference in publications.
Scimitar  brochure weight approx 1850 - NADA 1900 - Iboats 2751
Intimidator  brochure approx weight 1400 - NADA 1400 - Iboats 2289
CV-23  brochure 1400 - Iboats 1400
CVX-18  I/O  Brochure 950 - Iboats 1800

I agree .. the only way to know what your boat weighs is to take it to the public scales and weigh it.

CVX-16, boat motor, and trailer:

Oregon State Law...  Only fully loaded trailers weighing more than 1800lbs need plates & tags.  I keep copies of these printed out just in case I am ever pulled over.   ;D

Atta boy Eric! I like your style. Hey 50 lbs is 50 lbs.

Sadly here in FL virtually any trailer must be registered. No title necessary but you do need a registration. And a license plate.

Hey Red, I was just thinkin, are you sure a big Remora wasn't still attatched to the hull when ya weighed it ...?

I brought up the weight issue not long ago http://forum.cgoamn.com/index.php?topic=1920.0 but I think when compared to other many other makes, Glastrons/Carlsons are quite a bit lighter in comparison.

I believe you are right about that,  and Yes, I remember you bringing up the topic "Weigh in time"  and I think it would be Kool to get some more weights of these boats, lake ready.
