Rebuilding steering wheels?
« on: August 01, 2011, 12:34:11 AM »
Just asked on Fiberglassics but figured I'd ask here too (maybe iboats as well)...
My steering wheel is badly weathered where it wasn't covered with metal (mostly its circumference). If I can't find a replacement I like, what epoxy or other product should I use to try rebuilding the wheel? The weathered plastic feels like sandstone (both texture and durability). Whether I rebuild this or buy another wheel, I want to use the Glastron nut cap on it when I'm done.

I use a rubber bumper bondo. It's a two-part epoxy filler (part A and part B) that's flexible and sands good.  Put it on sand it down and paint it.  Anything else will crack.

That thing has seen better days!
That stuff Jerry is talking about sounds like the ticket.

I called Napa this morning to ask about a flexible bondo but they didn't know of such a thing. Looking it up online I then called back and had them look for it in their catalogs. They'll have some for me tomorrow. I wish there was also a white version instead of just the black to closer match with the white of the existing plastic. I might not bother painting it after, just put a wheel wrap on it like a previous owner did (also now deteriorated in the weather ;) ).
