Check your exhaust flappers...
« on: August 01, 2011, 11:12:59 PM »
So, I went to run some water through my block today.  After all the work we did on it, I wanted to make sure that there weren't any leaks.

I though it was strange when water started to pool on top of the intake.

Long story short, one of my exhaust flappers had gotten pushed in and sealed off an exhaust log.  I back filled my engine and filled my cylindar's with water.

Thankfully the engine was not running, so I didn't do any internal damage.

So...  Off came the exhaust manifolds so I could get at all the spark plugs and push the water out with the starter motor.

I'll try to put it back together tomorrow.  Sheesh.

Sounds like a dose of my kind of luck, Brian.  Sorry to hear about the trouble, hope everything is okay.  Hey engine guys - would it be a good idea to squirt some WD-40 or fogging oil in the plug holes before re-firing that motor?

I was gonna tell you Brian after we talked last night. The same thing happens to my parents Jet Ski. You can't turn the hose on till the motor is running. If you had started it first the exhaust pressure would have likely pushed the flapper open. Maybe from now on, Fire up the motor then turn the hose on...........or just check the flapper every time!

Hopefully she is good to go now.

Everyone needs a test tank. It's the only way you will know how it's cooling, and if the pump is working. I got mine off craigslist for $15.

True. You must start almost all jet propelled boats before you turn on the water. Take an old peice of garden hose or new and make a hook up kinda like the ear muffs for outboards. 2ft or 3 and install a high flow valve that way you can be right there with out having to run back and turn on the water. Yamaha pwc come with one but they would be to small for the mighty 460. The way the water gets to the engine circulation pump is from the jet thrust and the way it has to exit the exhaust require's the engine to be running to push it out or it will fill up with water.

The Larson (former Glastron) plant in Little Falls has a couple tanks they put their larger boats in to test before shipping.

It's already there Doug. It's called the Intercoastal Waterway. The catch is you have to be able to afford the castle on the moat.

Ya but those castles are really 'spensive man!? And building a dock can take years & bankrupt you.

I kinda like my 'situation' the way it is right now. Pay $75 bucks a year for a ramp key. Light cigarette in driveway, drive to ramp, launch boat, park truck, head into intracoastal, put cigarette out. Open beer, light cigarette ...
