1976 cv 16 with a 120 4 cyl
« on: August 23, 2011, 11:40:16 AM »
I found a 76 CV 16 with a 4 cyl and was wondering what one is worth sounds like it needs some work. Has not run in about 4 yrs. says floor is good but not sure. Also wondering how hard it would be to make it a V8 boat.  Any help would be great
I think this has become an addiction.

Pictures would be most helpful.

Not running in 4 years means that the motor and or carb might need some work.  It all depends on how well it was put into storage.

Going to a V-8 would be a good amount of work.  It depends on what v-8 you want to put in there.  Ultimatly, you would have to replace the drive as well to match up with the power that the new motor would produce.  We know quite well that over powering the gear set in the drive does not turn out well.

There have been a few v-8 cv-16's on the market this year.  it would be easier to buy one of them outright rather than tring to retrofit a standard CV-16SS.

Personally, I bought one in rough shape (good floor and stringers, but bad metalflake and interior) for 2K.  Motor was good, but I ended up putting over 2K into the interior and other parts.  I had 4K into it total, and it wasn't as nice as Jason's who bought his in great shape for roughly the same price.

Sometimes it is easier to buy the completed project rather than trying to restore.  Restoration takes a good amount of $ and a huge amount of time.

Pictures, pictures, pictures!

The transom height and engine bay width is the big problem with converting a standard CV-16SS to a CV-16SSV8 the transom of a V8 boat is about 3 inches taller than the in-line 4 banger.  The engine cover is wider and taller to accomodate the V8 also.  If you can either rebuild or do without a engine cover the conversion should be not a difficult one but you may run into transom height problems mounting the drive as the vertical dimension would raise the transom assembly to the top of the standard hull transom.

My 140 4cyl mercruiser does about 48 with a laser II 23P prop which is actually pretty fast for this small of a boat. I think you would be pretty happy with that.

You should look for a CV19 Jet then. Very similar lines to a CV16SS but already built with a big block V8 and a berkly jet. Little more interior space too.

If you are into a drive to AZ I have a 1976 CV-16ssV8 hull I would part with.  Have not done a thing with it.  It is a bare gutted hull.  Hull and trailer. Needs a complete rebuild and finish.

She's a BUTE aint she!  Actually, it's not near as heavy duty as it looks.  It's a stock shorelander trailer the the boarding plans by shorelander on it.  makes getting in and out and washing the boat on the trailer rather easy.

It's not the money, it.s the distance.  $350 is what I have in it.  Includes the origianl 302 that was in it.  She is in Phoenix.  No outdrive as I plan a mercruiser conversion.

A CV V8 would certainly be very cool.
Anybody ever think of dropping in an intercooled, turbo charged Buick Grand National V6? Not in one of these but something else. That would certainly be unique although I dont think the motors are real plentiful.

I have a 3.8 and OMC drive for my Glasspar. The supercharged one would be a simple swap.
