Any other CV-27 owners here?
« on: January 20, 2012, 04:54:18 PM »
Just curious if anyone else has a CV-27?  I didn't get a change to get mine wet after I bought it and was just curious about handling, fuel usage, and speed.  So far this winter I have been replacing the pre-alpha lowers with alpha gen 1 lowers and sandblasting and painting the uppers and transom assys.  It didn't really need to be done but keeps me busy.  It's such a beautiful boat but it's a monster.  I've never had a boat this big and I'm not sure if I am going to like it for everyday use.

You are going to love it!!!  Gas consumption is like any other V8.  Depends on how hard you turn the props. Mine is in the hurt bag and I have not run it much at all but I have had the pleasure of running Mike's boat up in MN and let me tell you, they are big boats, but they handle like a sports car.  Getting used to the mass of the boat does take a little getting used to (docking and loading/unloading) as it takes more to stop movement and the wind does push it around due to the height.

I love the blue and white of your boat.  The blue metal flake looks fantastic.

I don't plan on making many full throttle runs.  This boat is probably just going to cruise to the beach and back.  I've got the hydrostreams if I want to run fast.  I was reading the factory literature on these boats and it was saying these can reach speeds in the low 60's and yet get about 3mpg at cruise.  I find both numbers pretty hard to believe.

How does the gray water tank work on these?  I haven't figured that out yet.  Can you dump it overboard or do you need to pump it?

Greg

I would believe the low sixties in speed.

Mike with the yellow cv27 has said his will run that speed.

He has twin 350 at 260hp

Greg, that Is a beautiful boat, always been one of my favorites, I'd Love to have one, and the blue is my favorite.
If you prop that baby for 35mph cruise, I think it would be using about 8 gallons an hour, not bad in my opinion.

most outboards seem to get about 2-3 miles per gallon WOT so that does not sound to bad.

you don't use it everyday either.

Have you read the Power Boat Magazine review of the boat?  Stock with the twin 260's it does run low 60's add bigger carbs and smoother flowing exhaust and the $$$ will provide you with more speed.  There is no grey water tank.  It is a pump out head only as far as I know unless it has had something added to it.  The sink in the Galley and Head drain to through-hull fittings.

Read the Power Boat article here:
http://www.classicglastron.com/1979%20Carlson%20CV-27%20Boat%20of%20the%20Year%20Cover.html

Or send me a PM and I can send you scans of the article.

I actually have an original copy of the magazine the article was printed in.

I know this boat has 23p cleavers on it which I thought was a pretty steep pitch for a boat this size but maybe it turns them good because of the twins.  Cleavers weren't the most efficient props in the world either.  I would think it would run better with a set of mirages or lasers on it.

I have a set of captains call diverters for the exhaust but I really couldn't find a good spot for them to exit and I'd really hate to drill holes in this thing.  I've seen some people exit them above the swim platform which looks absolutely hideous to me.  I've seen some boats with twins that have side exit exhaust where the exhaust goes into a Y-pipe and exits out the side the motor is on.  It looks pretty clean to me.

The motors seem real healthy in this boat from when I ran them to winterize.  The port one only has 20 hours and the starboard has 100.  The entire boat only has 300 on it.

Mine is missing the wooden grab rails by the hatch.  Looking close at it I think the top portion of it was repainted at some point.  I also don't have the wiper on mine.

I have never seen another blue metalflake boat.  As far as I can tell it is original.  The flake is in the gelcoat.

The boat was a locally owned boat since new and seems to have been well taken care of.

The interior was redone at some point and done tastefully.  It makes the interior look much more modern.

I really like the one piece engine cover.  What year is the boat?  She may have been through makeover all together with paint and upholstery.  I have seen blue 27's but not metalflake. I think it was 1980 and 1981 that the 27 was offered in blue and white.  I also see your boat does not have the teak rails or any other rails onside the deck hatch as well as the bow lights are not the stock offered cat-eye lights.

"Midwatch Blue" were offered in 1980 & 1981.
Hard to tell from the small 1980 picture if it's metalflake, it's to small ...

what did you happen to do with your previous drives? If they are still around I may be interested.

The boat is a 78.  I was talking to a Glastron dealer who sold the boats back when they first came out.  He said that mine has a very early production number.  He sold some of the very first CV-27s that were made and comparing the HIN of mine to them he speculates that mine may have even been a prototype.  I don't know.  I've never even seen another CV-27 in person to compare mine to.

I'm going to keep the old drives for now.  If anything just to have spares.  As far as I know there was nothing wrong with them but the pre-alphas are notoriously weak and I just figured I would upgrade before one breaks.

It doesn't have the teak rails in the front but it does have aluminum rails around the sun deck.

Hmmm Prototype .... that could be.  Interesting.  I was not aware of any of the 27's built prior to 79 but it would have certainly been in R&D for a while.  None the less, I like it!!
