When I got my CVX 16 it had a blended black/orange astro-turf in it and looked to be all original when I tore it out. As you can see in the photo I posted earlier I went with a camel or sand color marine carpet and it looks really nice. Good neutral color.

Shawn the neighborhood association held an emergency meeting last night, we've decided that you have reached max capacity for yard space, I should take this one to keep balance in the neighborhood.

Ya nice find! Gel looks like it's in purty good shape. Yes that 188hp is a Ford 302. Bleve the Mercruiser designation was 898. Whatever that meant?

I think the 302 was a 888. The 898 was a SBC 305

Shaun's got it, the designation number is based on the HP:

The 305/898 = 198 HP
The 302/888 = 188 HP

Going to pick it up this afternoon I will stop by the car wash and hose her down. What is a good product to get the river scum off the bottom. Or is it just good old elbow grease?
I think this has become an addiction.

West Marine sells "hull cleaner" although I've never tried it myself. Mine was stained brown on the bottom when I got it and I cleaned that by hand using 3M buffing compound.

Good chance you can save the deck. Here's pictures of mine when I got it and then after a wet sand, compund buff, polish and wax. The deck felt like sandpaper when I got it.

That hull cleaner product works really well to remove what I call tea stains. The rivers I use usually leave a light brown tint on the sides of the hull. I spray that on and then you can watch the stains go away. Rinse it with water, let dry and then apply some good wax. It will get some pretty nasty stains out. I'd do it at a carwash as it will bleach out your concrete.

I had to use Muriatic Acid to clean mine. Depends how bad it is. It will not hurt the gel at all but you don't want it to touch your skin. Spray it on, let it soak a couple mins, then spray it off with water. You can get at any hardware store.

Just took it to the car wash and sprayed a layer of dirt off.  Going to need to use something on the hull its pretty dirty. We will see if I can save the gel it is pretty rough. More pics tonight hopefully. Got a car in the garage that I need to paint then pulling this one in. O and I am pretty sure that it has a 16 trailer under it boat hangs off the back about 1 1/2 feet and over the sides. He also did have the warranty card for the drive it was replaced in 09 new upper and rebuilt lower was in the water in "10" and hasn't been used since.

Well I think I am going to make the executive decision and repaint from the water line up. I buffed a few areas and i can get it to shine again but there is alot of silver flake that shows threw not the good deep orange that it should be.Thinking that I will just use regular automotive basecoat/clearcoat. I read a lot of other forums and there are advantages of both. Gel is more durable to scratches and bumping the dock. Base /clear there is little to no maintenance and is very easily repairable if i do need to touch up down the road. I was in the auto body field for 15 yrs and have all the product and know how for base/ clear. Hull is in great shape very little spidering. Gel seams like twice the work and then there is lots of buffing at the end. (I hate buffing)  Opinions? What does everyone think?

I just saw your post and read through it. Nice find! good luck with it. I love the CVX-18's. Let me know how you make out on the Paint. I have often thought about doing a repaint on mine. (not for a while) My buddy is in the automotive bis. and would save me big bucks helping me. I also wonder if its safe to go that route rather then going to all the trouble with Gel. I recommend finding a 350 to put in that thing. I did the swap in mine and love the power! ;D And Its not running at peak performence...

I have taken some flack for using this paint, but it is the most durable automotive paint I have ever used on a boat hull, single stage urethane,  it goes on easy, really easy to touch up, brilliant shine, and it's been on the bottom of my Scimitar for two years, and you probably know what that hull has gone through.

the base coat / clear coat is pretty good all right, but from what I have observed over the years is that it begans to check & peel in a few years after application unless it's very well taken care of.

Ole Red    The link that you posted is that what you used the Omni acrylic urethane? I used that on my other boat and it still looks good. Only thing with that is I think there is more maintenance with the single stage. I know Toyota started using single stage urethane on there black and white cars a few years ago . It does hold up pretty good. I use that same paint on my buddy's race cars every year and it holds up on there. I know if you dont prep the Gel/ fiberglass right it will start to crack and peal. That being said over all base clear is pretty tough. Most of the custom painted boats are all base clear. O and i went out there this morn put a battery in it and pumped the gas a few times and she started right up. ;D

Shrom CVX-18 what did you all have to change to go to the 350? I would rather have a 350 in it they are so much cheaper to build and upgrade.

The block of the 305's are the same as the 350 I can imagine your 302 would be also. So your engine mounts will be the same. Everything external of the block can be used on the 350 engine from the 305 or 302. I bought the 350 and swapped the water pump, manifold, fuel pump, power steering pump (everything) over to the 350. As far as needed to change things to mount the 350 in the boat. Nothing needs to be changed. It shoulds just drop in replacing the 302.  Sent you a PM

302 and 351 is a Ford block.  305 and 350 is a Chevy block i am pretty sure that nothing on the engine would change over and the rear of the engine mounting would be different would need some sort of adapter plate or parts from a chevy equipped boat

OH ok yeah I wasn't sure. In that case I'm not sure how involved it would be. I guess like you said find the transom mount for a Chevy. Check the spline of your outdrive, If you give me a spline count and dia I can check mine to see if they are them same. Not sure you might have a issue with wiring too.

I think the the 302 and 351 are the same block, could be an easy swap. Just say'in ;D.........LOL

Even though the 302 and 351W are basically the same engine the blocks are different. The 351 and 302 share the same bore dimeter but the 351 has a longer stroke than the 302 which means a taller block. The heads will bolt up to either one but because of the taller deck the intake manifolds are also different.

A chevy 305/350 is the opposite. They use the same block as they have the same stroke but the 350 has a larger bore diameter.

Drilled a couple holes in the flotation boxes and they are wet in the bottom. One of them started running water out. Jumped up and down all over the floor and it seems solid cant find a soft spot anywhere. Thinking I will remove the flotation boxes. Should I put them back in? or just make more storage room. Maybe built in cooler on one side
