Opinions please
« on: April 29, 2012, 06:10:53 PM »
I discovered an ear on the alternator for the 175 was cracked and eventually fell of after I pulled the motor and I took it a guy to see if I might be able to just get a front case for it. I guess if he could get it, it would be about 95.00, so now I am thinking about either a new one or getting this one welded. I thought about getting it welded originally but thought, if it failed, the consequences would be bad if out on the water, BUT way more serious stuff then this gets welded and doesnt fail. Anyone see a reason not to do it? Maybe the material wont weld good? I dont even know if the alternator is good. I suppose the plan of attack should be get it tested first, then welded.
I am looking around for new ones, just in case.

Ross,

I most of the metal used for those cases are a pot metal. I have seen several attempts by my customers(farmers) try to save a buck by welding a tab back on to have the weld fail while under use doing field work just to cause more damage, costing them more money. In my book replace the alternator. Spend a little more now to save a little more later. ;D

Yea it seems like pot metal and I think you're right. If that failed I could have an over heat issues as well as be stranded. I dont think its worth it.
Thanks

I'm sure Jerry's guy (the rebuilder) can  get you going Ross, I personally would not try welding the ear.  If you do end up needing a replacement, I'd be glad to check on getting you one at cost.  Just shoot me the part number off the old one to

So I contacted one place with the info and they gave me a cross to another but its only a one wire and I think mine is 3 based on the studs on it. Is this going to be another "cluster" to get wired up without frying stuff?
I'm not sure of the amp output but I would think part of the model number might identify that and the only thing remotely close in the number is "48"

Jerry took my alternator to his rebuild guy and he said, basically this thing isnt worth fixing. So I've been looking around at  new/rebuilds and price wise they run the gamit. 110.00-200 plus and I still dont know if they are drop ins.
Thanks Mark for your research too.
I ended up buying one from a place called db electrical that is supposed to be a replacement for my old Prestolite except its a one wire. So has anyone made one of these conversions lately? Just not use the extra wires? I dont have either the new alternator or wiring harness in front of me for more specifics then that.
