As a kid I would go out on Michigan with my father and his friends in 14' lund out boards with down riggers on them salmon fishing.  I have some memories of bad weather out there that I am sure the bow was 13' above the stearn how none of us got killed is beyond me.

Co-worker of mine got stopped on lake superior and got a 2,500.00 dollar fine cause his outboard exceeded the capacity on the plate on his boat.  Believe he said he had to get towed back also.  Sheesh, talk about fun haters.

I sure would like to know more about this one.  I am not sure what the size of the motor has to do with anything.  Just like putting a great big motor in a car....the cops give tickets for exceeding 55mph, not for having the ability to exceed 55mph.

To go a little further...  Under the 4th Amendment, can we deny the DNR official to search our watercraft without probable cause?  In other words, 'no, you cannot come on board and look at my manufacturer's plate'.  Just like being pulled over in a car - an officer cannot search my vehicle unless they have a suspicion or if I give them permission.  Pardoning the pun, law enforcement cannot go on 'fishing expeditions' looking for crimes to charge people with.

I'm pretty sure that's not the case on water the CG manages.  I believe they can inspect your vessel at any time.  In addition, I'm also pretty sure that the DNR can pull you over and have you show them that you're properly equipped, ie. enough life jackets, throwable cushion, fire extinguisher, etc.  I would think them checking your capacity plate would also be with in their jurisdiction to check.

That would be different from the 4th Amendment to an unlawful search...they can't just start looking in storage areas.

Also, the analogy with a suped up car doesn't really work.   If the car's engine breaks off its mounts,  no one sinks.  On a boat, you're in serious trouble instantly.

That makes a lot more sense! Education is the key. I am all for what the DNR is TRYING to do. Nobody wants invasive species in the lakes and rivers we enjoy. I don't think the sticker would really do much to remind people but education may help and a friendly reminder from your local DNR fella does not hurt either. I pull my drain plug every time and hang it from my transom strap hook so I don't forget it. I am sure we all do are part.

The guy that got fined is the same one who now has a ranger with a 300 verado on it.  I'll ask him about it tomorrow if I remember.  I believe he also said something about having to get towed in?  The CG wouldn't let him drive the boat or something??

Go get a nice "Run on Rathburn" sticker at the end of the month and cover it up.
