Mythbusted ...
« on: May 03, 2012, 01:44:53 PM »
Reruns of myth busters running in the background, and I hear they're doing the James Bond jump.
The announcer says "Remember, except for the remote controls, this boat is exactly like the one in the James Bond film." - and the camera cuts to a GT160 being driven off by remote control.  Even hollywood gets it wrong.
They landed upside down and ass end in front after their one jump, too.

GIL - that's what I had put originally ... but I edited the post when I saw a GT emblem on the bow.  I kept looking & didn't think it looked like a GT, but I changed my post anyway.

They did that episode about 2 years ago. They're were trying to bust the myth that the jump could be completed and the boat could land upright and continue driving. I don't know why they're trying to "bust" the myth when it's been proven in the behind the scenes footage from Live & Let Die that the jump was successful.

Rich, I agree.  It's like trying to bust the myth about Eleanor jumping the ambulance using the flat-bed trailer as a ramp on the bridge in Gone In 60 Seconds.  There's behind the scenes footage that shows that, too - including Nicholas Cage in front of the green screen.  I bed they'd come up with "plausible" for that one, too.

I watched the episode the first time around'n was duly unimpressed. Ya which 'myth' were they tryin' to bust?

The origional jump was performed by a guy name'a Gerry Comeaux. (think that's French) Be interesting to see if he's still alive?

If I'm not mistaken the ramp geometry, boat speed, hull mods, trajectory. Were calculated beforehand by some nerdy college kids.

Not to mention that the original movie GT150 had everything moved to center, steering, single seat, fuel tank & battery so that the weight distribution didn't cause the boat to tilt once it caught air.  Mythbusters left both back to back seats in & didn't modify anything except for the remote control operation.

the movie GT150 had two pads built on to the hull at the rear to stabilize it on the ramp , you can see one of them in the famous jump pic

I came across an article in a powerboat on the movie outlaw blues.......it says that a gt150 set the record(at that time) for an unmanned boat jump at 150 feet.......thing is it looks like it jumped down a waterfall. This one ran a 115.

"Unmanned"? Wussies! Waterfall? That's cheating! Gerry Comeaux jumped 110' or so over level water. Heck the 153 with the 90 would probly go 3 or 400 feet if'n ya drove it off Niagara Falls at full throttle?
