Red's Scimitar
« on: May 08, 2012, 12:51:57 AM »
I finally got rid of the Celebrity, and got to go do some work on the emerald mist boat today.  I decided to go ahead and re-finish it before the run on Rathbun.  The boat is pretty, but the "checking" and light spots on the bow were bothering me, and there is a few "dings" in the hip's as well, so I took it off the trailer, got the rub rail off, bought a box of razor blades and got about half the clear coat scraped off, actually ... I believe it's "Plasti-Coat"  how many of you remember that stuff ??  it come out in the 80's advertised to never need waxed or buffed, encouraging people to put it on new cars, trucks and boats, it's real flexible, not like automotive clear coat, or gelcoat, and it's about as thick as a business card,  Anyway, I got most all the bow, and about half the starboard side scraped off, the top surface came right off, but it is still stuck real tight, that took some patience, not to get the razor blade ito the gel-coat.

Steady hand Red !
Careful around the curves ...

Think I had a 1979 Chev El Camino with that stuff on it.
Had some special wax/cleaner that came with the car.

I sure admire your ambition Red! I'd be tired just getting it off the trailer. I'd like to see some pics of that process. No 12 foot aluminum fishing boat there.

I got a full day scraping today, about 3/4 done now, planning on shooting it Tuesday, supposed to be calm wind and temps in the low 80's .. just right for my shop

i never considered a razor blade.  I might have to give that a try too on my 21.  I still have some clear to peal off as well.

I never thought of using a razor blade.  Good and effective but surely a long haul.

If you are not careful, the razor blade can do more damage to the original gel coat than a sander, can make little gouge's you got to fill before re-coating. I was able to use the blade's on this boat because the original finish was slick and smooth, and most of the clear came off easy, but there were a couple areas that were too tough to get the clear off, so I left that area alone, will sand it and move on.

I had to pull off it yesterday, didn't get it ready to shoot today, but maybe tomorrow

Red

Do you end up buying new rub rails when you take them off, or can they be reused?
