Anybody using Teleflex Controls?
« on: June 24, 2012, 10:21:39 PM »
Considering this set of controls ...
Looking to be in the $320 price range. ... edit **  As low as $239 from Jamestown Distributors in all black.  $299 in chrome with trim & tilt.

Anybody using Teleflex controls & have something to say/share about them?  Claims universal cable sockets - but I'd call to verify before I order.

If I'm going to buy controls, I'd rather buy new - something with trim at the thumb position & a kill switch integrated already.  If you've got any other suggestions, I'll take 'em.  Mating the controls to a '76 Mercury 1150.

I have a '77 1150. How will you choke the engine? Does this control include the choke button?

Almost looks like it uses a separate key maybe on the dash? If so, you can get a key that you push in to choke. That is how my 1980 Mercury V6 150 is wired up.

Power Trim button can be added to the end of the throttle control of the standard Mercury controls. . TH Marine makes it but no longer manufactored and may be hard to find.

My boat came from the PO with a cheap Sierra push-to-choke ignition in the dash and quicksilver controls ... the controls were very wobbly with lots of play.  Yesterday the terminal on the neutral interlock switch came off .. I can't solder the terminal back on & can't purchase the switch by itself.  My trim & tilt switches were mounted in the center of the ski locker.

Since I've been working on the boat anyway, I've got a new Mercury push-to-choke ignition in the dash already.  My tilt & trim switch is wired, but loose (because I did not re-built the ski locker).

I'd rather not spend $200+ on used controls that may be just as wobbly as my previous set & if I buy new Mercury, I'm paying for the wire harness and all the other stuff that I don't need.  My quicksilver controls had been set up completely independent of ignition, choke, trim, etc ... they operated strictly as gear select & throttle, nothing else.

I think that's what we have on the CVX (came that way from the previous owner), and I LOVE it.  Fits the hand really well, the tilt/trim controls are in the great spot and feel solid, and the shifting is really smooth.  I'll head down to the boat and take a picture to verify in a second, but if it's what we have, I have nothing but good things to say about it.

$254 with tax and two-day shipping.

Called Teleflex, was assured that there'd be a match for my existing Teleflex Mercury control cables ...
I get the trim switch at the thumb, and a safety shut off ... figure my cost for genuine Merc controls might have been a tiny bit cheaper, but I'd have paid separately for the kill switch.  Ready to finish up my interior now.  Motivated.

So ... my new controls are here.  Have been.  I just haven't had it in me to sit out in my boat while it's 100+ outside.  Yesterday the car displayed 118 ... our little weather thing at the house showed 103 for the sensor in the back yard.  I don't have any shade to work in, either.

Maybe I'll get them hooked up if it cools off this weekend.

Invest in an EZ-up canopy and a box fan. Helps on those hot days and will give you affordable shade.

OK.  Dry run.  Positioning complete.  Almost full range of motion.  Forward clears to WOT without scraping knuckles, reverse gets up to about 70% throttle ... better than the idle only in reverse that I had with the old Merc controls.  Happy to have a trim switch at my thumb & the safety kill switch, too.  Time to break out the fiberglass and tab in my mounting bracket so this can bolt/screw into place - then, FINALLY, I can finish my interior and put the side padding on and gunwale/gunnel storage.

Here's a picture of the side panels set in place.  The aqua colored spaces on the photo show where there will be polished aluminum trim - a 9" radius curve plate behind the controls & a 4 foot long strip.  The aluminum plates will be screwed in & hold the panel to the boat.  I started polishing last night in bed, but the general said that I was making the bed shake.  Goal to be polished and installed this weekend, setting seats in place.  I've got a couple little puckers to mess with below the controls, otherwise I'm pretty happy with the result.

You can see the dimpled/punched vinyl - both red & white are dimpled/punched.  I like the red pleated as a liner inside the gunwale storage.  Trying to work out how to incorporate some of the pleated red into the back seat.

Looks good Dan!  I'm not even going to try finishing my interior until this fall/winter, so I'm still gathering ideas.  I like the side panels, and the contrasting colors.

Thanks guys.  I spent some time polishing tonight in front of the boob tube.  Renting an engine hoist tomorrow morning, maybe I'll get some holes drilled and mount those suckers for good.  It's been a long time coming.

Another photo.  I'm done polishing aluminum for the season.  All of this was mill finish aluminum flat bar and plate.  Measured and cut on my own.  The countersink sparkled like jewels before I sunk my stainless screws in.   My mounting hole at the very front screw at the control plate is about 1/32" off and the screw goes in at a slight angle.  Grrr.

Other than that, I'm happy with the looks.  Hoping to turn the key for the first time today ... daughter's sick, though, so we'll see how much time I get outside.  Ear infection and tonsillitis.  Not much I can do except give her meds on time and make her comfortable.  I've seen a lot of cartoons today.
