Can my mercruiser 120 turn this?
« on: June 26, 2012, 08:04:17 PM »
Thinking about buying props and trying them out on the starflite, found one on my local Craigslist

http://grandisland.craigslist.org/boa/3049086998.html

Just wanting to know if anyone thinks I am crazy for wanting to buy it and try it. Right now I have a 19P Michigan wheel aluminum that I can hit 38mps at 4800rpm

I Think it will work for you. My brother has a 120hp and we ran a 21P. Seem to cruise along nicely. Unsure of max rpm though or speed cause the speedo didn't work at the time. His boat is a CV-16. His boat might be lighter then yours.

I used to run a Mercury/Quicksilver 21p stainless prop on my V174 when I had the Mercruiser 120. My best speed was 39-40 mph at 4600 rpm. It was an early version of a pre-Vengeance series prop, before Mercury came out with all the fancy castings and prop names.

Cleaver are designed as surface props, best for light boat with high power motor, with drive raised high on transom.
Don't think it would work well ...

Sorry Joe, I have put too much money and heart into the starflite to switch, and I finally got it running good after installing an ignitor instead of the points. Plus I don't think I could get Amber to let me get another boat. She thinks she need a new car and a garage to put it in ;D. Hey, let me know the next time you are taking the cv out, i would be willing to pull the starflite over. Or if you are coming to Sherman of calamus or any of the other lakes this direction.

A normal 21P SS prop would get you to 40. Don't get that cleaver or a different high performance prop like a laser II. You don't have enough HP. Tonka Jim runs a 21P SS on his 68 V174 with a 120 and i know that was the best performing prop he could find for his boat.

I second that, and if I still had any of my 21p ss props I'd sell you one but I unloaded them over a year ago.

Brandon... you're welcome to try my 2nd new Six Gun prop at the MN meet.   The guy I bought it from also has a SS 3 blade 19p for $130.

I'm going to try and track down the 21p blades for my new prop as well.  I now have 17p and 19p blades and 1 hub that fits.

The owner of the 2nd set said the prop shot his 19 ft Sea Ray out of the hole much better than his 19p SS... so we'll see.

Hey Doran,  I have been looking for a 19p ss prop. Do you have contact information for him. And thanks I will probably be taking you up on the offer to try your six gun at Red Wing.

Brandon, it will not work. Take it from me,  I run 23p cleavers and I don't think they are made for single engines. Buddys of mine have tried my prop on a CV23, with a 260 merc, and a buddy with a 270 Baja 454 mag. Neither one gained anything, I think both performed even worse. They both had trouble getting out of the hole, and when they got going the CV23 did not have enough hp to gain anything. The baja had hp, but just made a rooster tail with no speed increase. You need a round ear prop.

The CV27 and Intimidator are the only 2 Calrsons I'm aware of that came from the factory w/clever props. The Timi has the raised X and I suspect w/twins pushed outward from the center of the hull the drives on a 27 run higher in the water as well. As already said, I wouldn't bother w/clever.

I wouldn't hesitate to try a Laser II style prop. A raked blade prop works much better on my CVX18 than your standard round ear prop, and not for just all out top speed either. Every boat is different and you don't know unless you try. My dad runs a prop similar to a Laser on his X16D w/140 Mercruiser.

I also have a 19P SS round ear prop that I am selling for $75.

Brandon - if you're already running 38 miles per second!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't think you should look for a faster prop.  ;D
