The Glastron V-153 is Sold
« on: July 17, 2012, 03:20:26 PM »
The Glastron V-153 is Sold. The buyer, Tom, seems like a perfect match for the boat. He is restoring a V-143 and realized he would not finish the project this year and wanted a classic Glastron he could use now. He also has other boats and grew up with boats in the family around the St. Croix Marina in Hudson, Wisconsin.

We tried the boat out on White Bear Lake and put the boat through its paces. Tom got used to the handling of the boat and felt comfortable with it. His father, a retired policeman, can not understand having a 115 HP motor on a boat rated for a 90 horse.

Hard to believe while Tom was pulling away with the Glastron behind this SUV that it now belonged to someone else. Emotional experience.

Gave Tom the maintenance log on the Mercury and we went over alot of details on the boat and motor. Tom may join us in the Glastron club. But if his V-153 goes faster than the CVX-16...........................

Wow, David, I didnt think you'd ever part with that. Well you can only use one at a time and space can be an issue. Congrats but yea, I bet it was tough letting it go. It went with the older merc I presume?

It was tough to part with the Glastron V-153 after 41 years. Knew every inch of the boat, how it handled, and with the 2-blade bronze prop, was fun to play with the throttle and trim. Boat was very balanced and run effortlessly. That last run with the new owner on White Bear Lake almost made me change my mind about selling it. Sold the boat, the 1974 Merc 115 that had been on the boat since 1987, an extra 19" alum prop, an extra speedometer, and other miscellaneous parts.

Some people have a stable of boats or cars that they can pick from to drive, depending on their mood, the trip distance, the season of the year, and the purpose of the trip. But I only have so much room in the garage and had to make a choice.

If I were the 153 I'd be feeling like a woman spurned. After 41yrs of faithful service. Thrown to the wayside in favor of a younger more attractive redheaded model. Shame shame shame ...

Oh well, you can only drive one at a time so it's probly for the best. And her new boyfriend sounds nice ...  Plus now ya got money for a jack plate and more props! WooHoo!! Heh heh heh

Jerry, it will be interesting to see how your boat performs. Hope it meets your expectations. Have you chosen a prop yet? I am thinking that you need a prop with good grip for your elevated motor height, something like a Mercury Chopper, Laser II, or Mercury Tempest. If I had to give an opinion on the best prop, I would say a Mercury Tempest which has four blades and is used by many Allison boat owners and is the standard for a generally all around good prop. Believe the Tempest comes in all pitches from about 21" on up.

Doug, the CVX-16 has about 2" of play in the steering wheel so we need a new Teleflex steering system. Then the carbs needs to be rebuilt and the VRO fuel pump replaced by a regular fuel pump. Luckily, none of the above are critical and can be done in the future.

Any radical speed upgrades such a jackplate, over the hub exhaust props, use of portable gas tanks in the back instead of 18 gal bow tank with have to wait until the motor gets switched to the 1988 Mercury 115 HP. So far the Johnson is treating me well at 54.8 MPH. Plan on sharpening the blades of one of the 22" Rakers and see if this helps.

I'm thinking a 23/24 4 blade. Mark's prop shop had one, but he sold it before I could get up there to get it. Jerry works about a mile from my house I'll see what he has.
My upholsterer is coming Monday, and Jon Olson in Prior Lake is doing the lettering and art work.

Dave if you need help with steering let me know ... I've gotin' pretty good with steering replacement ... LOL
I would just run the VRO fuel pump until it gives out, non VRO pumps are cheap but little mount bracket need to be made/brought.

Jerry
Is he going to just do reg. numbers or something fancy ?
Will you be ready before Red Wing ?

I like the Johnson better than I thought I would. The white, red, and black colors blend in well with the color of the boat. The speed of 54.8 MPH GPS is outstanding. I like the lower profile of the Johnson also.

If the motor had a big negative, I would switch it. Switching motors is alot of work. For now, the Johnson is in the starting lineup. Probably need to rebuild the carbs and see why the RPM's vary when the throttle is in a fixed position.

For two motors that look and are designed so differently, the performance is about equal.

Truely they both are great motors, I'm running a cvx16 with a Johnson 115, only geting 49 with a 19" prop thats good for the type of boating we do...  May look at other props just for the fun of it...

I've gone 4 season with no major issues, frankly this year I've just put gas in it and go...

It is not a black and white issue, it is a gray issue (Mariner?). LOL
