First turn of the key ...
« on: August 07, 2012, 07:37:56 PM »
Nothin.
Damn.
With all that prep, you'd think I know to throw a battery on the charger.

Choke works, I get one "click (and hold)" when I turn the ignition switch.
Charge in the morning, then I'll try again.

Parents coming, too, so my focus has to shift back to inside projects.  AHHHHH

Working or not, I'm bringing the damn thing to Red Wing.  Even if it just sits looking pretty.

It will work Dan, you will be amazed how it all comes together in the last minutes. And you will be amazed at how many OH DUH! moments you will have on the way to the end ;D

Do you get any clicks of the starter solenoid when you turn the key? Maybe the shift control isn't exactly in neutral causing the safety switch cut out the start circuit?

Rich - I've got a freewheelin' prop.  I can spin it easily by hand both directions ... spin it like the price is right wheel, even.  One dollar, One dollar !!!

The single click I got sounded like it was from the starter solenoid.  I can spin the flywheel by hand - had sprayed inside each cylinder with fogging oil to get those heads lubed up.

I'm just hoping that the ignition switch is wired properly.  Everything else works, though.  Lights, trim (minus the big leak), choke ....

If the starter solenoid is clicking then the start circuit it correct. You need to diagnose from the start solenoid to the starter. If you use a pliers or screwdriver to short across the two large terminals of the solenoid and the starter reacts then the solenoid has probably pooped out, that's the technical term for corrosion on the internal contacts. You might have to replace the solenoid.

Brandon ... yes, indeed.  That little guy is clipped securely in place.

Rich, I'll check it out tomorrow.  The single click that I'm hearing was pretty consistently a low battery charge on my old SSV with yamaha outboard.

Could also be a bad cable connection too. But usually then you just get one click and then nothing.

bring it to Red Wing, we'll get it running! We have quite the pit crew.

No kidding! I remember Red and others trying all weekend to get an Intimidator running, and by golly, by the end they did it!  Truly great group of mechanical minds will be gathered  in Red Wing, I might need some help as well; and I know it will be offered at the meet.  Can't wait to see it!

Ok ... took a two day break ... had company coming to stay at the house and needed to finish a few inside projects.
Battery fully charged, thought I'd give it a quick test after dinner.

The sucker cranks.  Turns over, caughing up a little white smoke through the exhaust but wouldn't fire & stay put.

Bright side - everything appears to be wired properly and I don't have to take anything apart.

Maybe tomorrow I'll pick up a can of starting fluid and spray it through the carbs while turning the key (sure would like a remote start, so I could do this by the motor while standing on the ground).

Worst case scenario, I'm gonna beg a few to look her over and help get tuned up on Thursday evening, Friday day.

Put some of the gas/oil mixture into a spray bottle so the cylinders are lubricated and spray that!

Maybe ... I just figured the ether would ignite faster.
I use to use it on the motorcycle whenever I had trouble getting that up and going.

If you hook a jumper wire with a toggle or push button switch to your starter solenoid small terminal and a positive lead you can crank your engine at the engine. Just turn your ignition key to run. The choking is a little difficult though. That's how i run compression checks too, but with the ignition off.
