Axels, bearings and seals
« on: August 08, 2012, 06:11:31 AM »
I have been replacing the races, bearings and seals on 2 of my trailers and encountered and issue with one of them. I had to use a wrench to back the nut all the way off of one of them on the V163 trailer and I havent determined yet if the nut is bad or the axel or both. Does anyone local have a large set of taps and dies so I can chase the threads or know of a good place I might be able to buy one or two? I have 3 sets now and dont want to buy another entire set. I dont know what size it is yet so that doesnt help much :(

I have a couple files with 8 different threads on each one. (I can't afford snap-on)

You can "borrow" a thread cutter set from most O'Reilly Autoparts stores.  I used one here - they take a deposit equal to the purchase price ($95 for the whole kit) and refund the entire amount when you return it.

I used my debit card and it took a couple days to get the refund posted, where the charge posted immediately.  Other than that, I had no trouble and the only effort was driving to the store twice (once to go get it, once to take it back).

I brought the nut to work today in an attempt to find out what thread it was and we ran a 3/4-16 tap into it and cleaned it up a bit. About 1/3 of the threads are crap, so I'll probably just replace that but at least I know the thread size now.
Thats a great idea about "borrowing" the tools from O'Reilly's I think I stop in tonight and check it out.
Thanks all

I picked up my new bearings and seals last night at Forest Lake Trailer but they did not sell crown nuts in my size but the guy there (Al) sent me to Ace Hardware. Not the place I thought I would find them, but they did have them and while I was there, I looked at their tap and die selection and they sold them individually and had the 3/4-16 die I needed, so for 12.50, I decided to buy it. For my trailer, there are 2 sizes of seals available and I didnt have my old one with.  :(
Hope I got the right one. I'll find out tonight.
